Adult child has to make their bed before going to work

It is my parents house so I follow their rules and I have no intention of bringing this up.

I am 24 and live with my parents, it is a house rule that I have to make my bed before going to work.

Is this a silly rule or setting a good example?

We always make our bed the moment we get out of the shower.

I would feel really yuck if it wasn't make and the numerous ridiculous pillows placed just so.

My son and daughter, however - 24 and 22 - don't do theirs. And they close their doors and I don't care. It's not my space, how they keep it (within reason) is their own business.

My only rule is they bring plates and cups down before I have to buy a new set.

Why wouldn't you make your bed? You're a grown-up.

I’m a grown up and don’t make my bed.

Ohthatsabitshit · 09/12/2024 17:43

It’s a good rule but you should air it while you have breakfast.

I don’t eat breakfast and I wouldn’t be making my bed either.

Mind you, I moved out at 17 so it was nothing to do with my parents.

Start acting like an adult and they might treat you like one.
Making your bed is basic grown-up habit and is supposed to put you in a good mindset for the day. It takes 2 secs. They’re worried that you still live at home and have as much interest in making your bed as a 7 year old.
Go and rent a room or a flat if it’s bothering you so much.

It really isn't. If anything a bed needs airing, not having the duvet covering it all day.

Goodness knows how I've managed to adult with a good mindset every day for 50 years without making my bed in the morning.

It's a habit that makes you feel good. That's great, but it doesn't make it necessary for everyone (or even desirable).

godmum56 · 09/12/2024 19:44

Another non bedmaker here, Its a monumentally stupid rule but as others have said, their house their rules. I flip the covers back and leave it to air all day. Been doing it for some 55 years or so and so far the bedmaking police haven't visited.

Oh ffs! It's not so unreasonable to want to have a bit of daylight!

Is there literally only one door on your landing? Meaning you have to have that particular door open, staring at the unmade bed in horror?

“Worried”? This is insane! Who worries about their adult child’s level of “interest” in making their bed?! 😆😆

Air the room with an open window x1 ht. Tidy the bed linen, depending on bedding used, it should be neat looking (duvet up or down, quilt no quilt, throw no throw etc means variations). Pillows fluffed and positioned at the head of the bed.
My children made their beds from 5 onward, I would fully expect a young adult to do the same.
Tidy beds sets the tone for the rest of the home.
Are you neurodiverse? Because tidying a bedroom child or adult is basic similar to changing into clothing vs staying in pj’s.
It’s also respectful to the rest of the household.

can you hear my eyes rolling?

godmum56 · 09/12/2024 19:58

GildedRage · 09/12/2024 18:22

@allthatfalafel because it’s akin to tidying up after a meal, putting dishes away, or taking garbage bags that are full out. It’s respectful to maintain a tidy organized home. All members of a family are responsible to do their part, and making a bed is part of that show of respect.

its not a public area of the house and doesn't inconvenience others so why is it respectful or anybody's business?

Glitchymn1 · 09/12/2024 19:59

🤣 “Controlling” - it’s their house, not making the bed is bloody downright lazy! Jesus Christ. Leave it to air whilst you have breakfast and hopefully shower.

And yes, if the door was closed I’d be in there because it’s my house and I want all the beds made.

If it bothers you, move out.

Nothatgingerpirate · 09/12/2024 18:35

I think airing and making your bed should come automatically, definitely at 24 yo 😉

why?

godmum56 · 09/12/2024 20:01

Auburngal · 09/12/2024 18:41

I have always made my bed up even as a child.

It's good example and part of the routine of getting up.

why?

LookingForAHandHold · 09/12/2024 20:01

Personally I can't stand getting into an unmade bed.

It takes 5 seconds.

GreenEggs483 · 09/12/2024 20:02

BrightonFrock · 09/12/2024 19:51

No, i was talking about preferring to have doors open, as it keeps natural light and air flow. I'm not obsessed by it, and yes I respect the autonomy of the adult who uses a spare room, and they will, when reminded, even open a window sometimes. I was responding to a poster who said that closed doors can encourage mould. And it's true - that room has only had mould growth when the door and windows have been kept closed.
It is also quite gloomy upstairs in our house and we are doing the adult a favour letting them use the room. They do keep the door shut, and i don't comment, and I certainly don't snoop ( in re a previous poster's comment)
I was simply saying that I don't particularly like it, is all.

I wonder if this is the difference.

People who make their beds the second the sheets cold. Do you have extra stuff on your bed to make it pretty. You know extra pillows and throws and stuff you don’t use?

My bed just has the bed sheet (on top of the mattress protector), a blanket, a duvet and the used pillows. Nothing extra note fancy it’s my bed.

greengreyblue · 09/12/2024 20:02

I fold my duvet back neatly( if it matters) and often leave it until I’m home at 4pm. Sometimes I make it if I have time. It’s airing and nobody else sees it, everyone is out at work.

BrightonFrock · 09/12/2024 20:03

Boltonb · 09/12/2024 19:09

I think it’s silly. But I also think it’s pretty shocking that an adult needs to be told to make their bed.

But that’s just the point - she doesn’t. No one needs to make their bed, so no one needs to intervene if she doesn’t.

It's a silly rule. I lived with my parents when I was an adult and I don't think it was insisted I make my bed once I was out of childhood - and they were both people who made their beds every day. I still don't make my bed - but my bedroom is very tidy!

I don't know how you can look yourself in the eye.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 09/12/2024 20:12

So does my 8 year old...

saraclara · 09/12/2024 20:13

This is nuts.

No-one else needs to see my bed. Making it isn't a hygiene issue (in fact if anything, the more hygienic thing to do is leave it unmade).

So yes, it's a silly rule.
