I’ve read some things in mine and sort of sense this might be the case but not 100% sure

Also is there a class issue around Fray Bentos pies ?

I love those !

I think I'm fancy but I would love a crispy pancake on a sandwich
Also fishfingers and a pot noodle

My DS has a very lovely but very posh gf. He visited her family for a few days as they live a long way away. By the time he left he had converted them all to the idea that anything tastes better between two slices of bread n butter!

Your DS is so right. My very posh friend loves fish fingers butties. I’m not sure if someone introduced her to this culinary masterpiece or it was something they discovered on their own.

Any remembrance of French Bread Pizza?

I loved those!

Thevelvelletes · 08/12/2024 21:09

Don't get the love for findus crispy pancakes.
I'm a 70s kid and I hated them back then. The cheese ones were the worst as the filling smelt like sick.
And I'm working class through and through.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/12/2024 21:11

I loved those

Yay!

I must be lowered class l loved the pancakes
The cheese pancakes are the nicest .
'oh no they're not ' 😁

I liked the cheese ones - the only ones I've seen recently have been cheese and ham.

Did no-one else have Fray Bentos pies and other meals in tins as part of their lockdown emergency stock a couple of years back ?

I sometimes used to put a fray bentos pie, tin of spam and a pot noodle in my kids Xmas stockings as a special treat (didn't really do junk food).

Backfired when they told the teachers......

Amongst all the faux horror and snobbery on here - this made me laugh!

JayJayj · 09/12/2024 18:08

I have never heard of the pie but I don’t really like pies!!

I grew up eating crispy pancakes and loved them however… I would definitely not buy them for my daughter now.

tommyhoundmum · 09/12/2024 18:26

I had Fray Bentos pies all the time as a child. It fed 4 or 5 of us. Never had the crispy pancakes though as they weren't around. Veggie now and recently found and bought a cheese and onion Fray Bentos pie. My aspirant daughter pulled a face. I am a working class northerner and it has enabled me to speak truth to power with or without offence when I thought it was necessary.

fairytailcat · 09/12/2024 19:01

My mother served up crispy pancakes all the time.

Also Findus' french bread pizzas...

She was a terrible cook

Deadbeatex · 09/12/2024 19:02

Funnily enough I had a fray bentos pie tonight for the first time. I had to use a food bank this week and it was one of the items I was kindly given.
I think I did it wrong though? The top was crispy (close to burnt tbh) but the other pastry layers were soggy 🤢 are they supposed to be? Very little mince and if there was any onion in it I didn't find it lol I forced it down as honestly just grateful to have had a hot meal but I can't say I enjoyed it and there was a fair bit of soggy pastry pushed to the side!
So did I screw up cooking it or is this what it was supposed to be like? I've another one in the cupboard and I'm not looking forward to having it tbh. (I took the lid off, popped the tin in the over for 30 mins exactly as per cooking instructions)
On a brighter note I used to LOVE findus pancakes and I'll have to keep an eye out for some once finances improve

Grew up having both

Got some Crispy Pancakes not long ago for nostalgia purposes but it wasn't the same.

Never have Fray Bentos now

Same. I did the nostalgia purchase on both Brain's Faggots and Pot Noddles and they are not the same at all. Not sure if it was my memory or new recipes that were faulty.

JustMeAndTheFish · 09/12/2024 19:54

I love a Fray Bentos pie… and used to love a Heinz Toast Topper

Cassandra28 · 09/12/2024 20:19

Fray Bentos pies do not have a class issue. Rich or poor, they just allow you to eat them. It is just a pie

Matsukaze · 09/12/2024 20:32

babydungarees · 08/12/2024 12:19

For years I thought Fray Bentos was the name of the pie man, then found out it’s actually the name of the town in Uruguay where the pies are made. Fun fact for anyone else who didn’t know 😂 I used to love crispy pancakes but they’re a bit rubbish now they’ve took the salt out.

Sorted if a question about the origins of the name of Fray Bentos pies ever comes up in a pub quiz😂

Sadly I think that's what they're like. They're only £2-3 to buy so not a quality item.

That money would probably be better spent on a tin of corned beef I think.

Gingernan · 09/12/2024 20:43

I still occasionally have the cheesy Findus pancakes but Fray Bentos pies are no longer delicious.
I once spent Christmas nannying in one of the BFPOs, Dad was a Major , mum a Lady.Lovely people who sometimes served up Birds Eye beefburgers with a selection of veg in their quite formal dining room. I imagine they would have given the Crispy pancakes a go.

anon666 · 09/12/2024 21:35

I think there is. We never had crispy pancakes but my husband did, and I've always had a sneaking suspicion it's a class marker.

Fray Bentos pies were a favourite of my dad, which is always a sign it was a working class thing. Mum hated them and she was definitely brought up middle class.

notjaneausten · 09/12/2024 22:03

Ooh the square fish in a bag with sauce. And, my mother's speciality, Surprise peas and Cadburys Smash.

WarmingClothesontheRadiator · 09/12/2024 22:19

Vesta Curry and Fray Bentos pies are memories associated with childhood holidays. I remembered loving a Fray Bentos pie so about 20 years ago I bought one to try again - I couldn’t eat it. Some things are best remaining happy memories.

I buy frozen peas, garlic, ginger and parsley.

mitogoshigg · 09/12/2024 22:20

They are revolting as are those pies. Nothing to do with them he storage methods, I buy frozen pies and breaded products just not weird processed pancakes.

Mammyloveswine · 10/12/2024 00:02

I'm a teacher and midweek my kids survive on freezer food..

LondonLawyer · 10/12/2024 00:09

Never eaten either, not as a child or adult. I just looked up a Fray Bentos pie, and it looks revolting, with pretty dubious ingredients, relatively unhealthy but not particularly cheap, either!

BlueFlowers5 · 10/12/2024 06:04

Cod in butter sauce...swoon.

Anyone remember Heinz puddings in a tin? I once boiled one dry and it was like a bomb going off..
