I’ve read some things in mine and sort of sense this might be the case but not 100% sure

Also is there a class issue around Fray Bentos pies ?

I love those !

Cod in butter sauce...swoon.

Anyone remember Heinz puddings in a tin? I once boiled one dry and it was like a bomb going off..

They were actually quite nice, as I remember.

Any thoughts on Vesta beef curry?

Yes. Has anybody managed to replicate that particular shade of green in a foodstuff?

@Deadbeatex

I think I did it wrong though? The top was crispy (close to burnt tbh) but the other pastry layers were soggy 🤢 are they supposed to be? Very little mince and if there was any onion in it I didn't find it lol I forced it down as honestly just grateful to have had a hot meal but I can't say I enjoyed it and there was a fair bit of soggy pastry pushed to the side! So did I screw up cooking it or is this what it was supposed to be like?

Not sure if that's what's it's 'meant to be like' but whenever I've cooked one that's been my experience too!

As an aside - what do you actually like to get from the food bank? I normally put in meals in tins eg sausages and beans or meatballs as I'm wary of anything which would need a long cooking time.

@BlueFlowers5 I used to like the puddings in a tin but I've always taken them out and microwaved them. I imagine my mum must have steamed them growing up as we didn't have a microwave. One pudding always served 4 of us though. I would probably do between two people.

Honestly even though it wasn't the nicest it was a hot meal so very grateful and happy to have received it. Personally anything that's quick to cook as it uses less gas/electric would be appreciated but it sounds like you're already thoughtful to this with your donations. The cup a soups have been brilliant

Butterscotch Angel Delight now comes to mind and sandwich spread. Sorry totally irrelevant

Spacecowboys · 10/12/2024 18:08

Are they not a 70’s and 80’s thing rather than a class thing . I remember them as a child. My dc’s have never eaten them.

Thevelvelletes · 10/12/2024 19:25

Once ate a fray bentos pie straight out the tin uncooked whilst pissed...was a sick 🤢 little bunny come morning.

No, they were definitely not middle-class food, very working class, and for lazy people to boot as my mother would have said.

chipsaway · 10/12/2024 23:03

I’m working class and my parent tried to force feed me those things. Tried once never again. I opted for boiled egg on toast or would buy my own. Shuddering at the thought! 🤢

Caswallonthefox · 10/12/2024 23:21

Grew up in a middle class family. Crispy pancakes, fray bentonite and fish fingers were regularly eaten in our house. Angel delight or Arctic roll for pudding.

Any remembrance of French Bread Pizza?

Yes! I even burnt the roof of my mouth, cuz I was too hungry to wait for the molten cheese to cool down.

Bringithere · 08/12/2024 14:55

my theory is that these food items are eaten by aristocracy and council dwellers, on the basis neither give a shit what others think of their dietary choices. Everyone in between would be shopping for these at 3am, wearing dark glasses and a baseball cap and sneaked back into the house in a thick, dark tote, lest anyone sees the labels through the carrier.

I see we have developed much the same theory. 😉

Can't help wondering what the supermarkets are going to make of the sudden and wholly unexpected uprush in the impulse purchasing of the products of Messrs. Brain, Findus and Bentos. 😂

Caswallonthefox · 10/12/2024 23:29

My mother also went over to oven chips when they came out. Dry, tasteless lumps of reconstituted potatoes. If I eat chips I make them from scratch.

SusieSussex · 10/12/2024 23:43

Findus. Success on a plate for you

MaidOfSteel · 08/12/2024 16:10

I don't think the term 'ultra processed foods' had been coined back in the 70s.

The only people with a problem with these foods are snobs.

In the 70's I believe it was called 'food'.😂

Shantayyoustaysashayaway · 16/12/2024 23:42

I'm not a big pastry eater but do like the pastry on a Fray Bentos but has to be minced beef/steak as don't like creamy sauces.
Growing up in the 80s findus crispy pancakes was always fried & the coating absorbed a lot of the lard (as it was back then) Tried them again recently & wouldn't have them again.
The one beige food I do love are Bernard Matthews Turkey Drummers. Could happily eat a packet by myself so don't buy them!

I definitely agree with you on your Fray Bentios preferences!
