To ask if there’s a social class issue surrounding Findus Crispy Pancakes ?

Jumell · 08/12/2024 12:14

I’ve read some things in mine and sort of sense this might be the case but not 100% sure

Also is there a class issue around Fray Bentos pies ?

I love those !

my theory is that these food items are eaten by aristocracy and council dwellers, on the basis neither give a shit what others think of their dietary choices. Everyone in between would be shopping for these at 3am, wearing dark glasses and a baseball cap and sneaked back into the house in a thick, dark tote, lest anyone sees the labels through the carrier.

I think this is right, it’s the people who are not quite there who have aspirations to be.
I remember having Findus crispy pancakes as a child sometimes. I was very brought up as very much upper class though.

usernother · 08/12/2024 15:26

I grew up eating both. I'm v working class. We used to have a fray bentos pie between 4 of us for tea (see, I'm so working class I don't say dinner). I can only presume they were a lot bigger in the olden days, or that this was one of the reasons we were all so skinny.

Printedword · 08/12/2024 15:29

I had them as a child and they always made me feel ill. I think it was flavour enhancer which has mustard base and I’m allergic

susiedaisy1912 · 08/12/2024 15:30

Findus CP weren't allowed in our house as my mum said they were junk food and expensive however we regularly had fray Bento pies and it served w kids and 2 adults. I may or maynot eat a whole one to myself occasionally

Bringithere · 08/12/2024 15:32

TonTonMacoute.
That is a delightful story . How wonderful to give that less of a shit and be so confident of your place in society

FancyBrickHam · 08/12/2024 15:32

They are £2 food and used to contain horse

DonningMyHardHat · 08/12/2024 15:33

I do wish the UPFs brigade would fuck off and sto draining
the fun out of everything 🙄

ForPearlViper · 08/12/2024 15:34

I grew up in a house where everything was cooked from scratch by my Mum. I think we were working class but, as Mumsnet hadn't been invented, it wasn't such a hot topic! Even at university we all cooked in my houseshare.

I didn't have a Crispy Pancake until I was 22. I LOVE Crispy Pancakes.

Mum also baked and to this day has a reputation for being a good baker. We whined for 'shop bought' cakes. If I'm offered a cheap shop bought Battenburg vs a lovingly made home made cake (and if it were possible to do so without offending) I'd pick the Battenburg every time. The more synthetic the better, I like that yellow and pink to glow in the dark.

Lorna Sage is very good on the novelty of frozen and tinned food in post war era in her biography BadBlood

1986 beach in Portugal on a Sunday. Local families came down, BBQ of horse meat was popular.

WednesburyUnreasonable · 08/12/2024 15:35

I never had (or even heard of) these in any setting - home, school, friend’s house or parties, people buying nostalgic food at uni - until I saw people post about them on the internet.

Plenty of other freezer food, just not these!

Shows how junk food is addictive

Bet you’re fun at parties.

KimberleyClark · 08/12/2024 15:38

Anyone remember sausage rolls in a tin?

I know, that first Crispy Pancake at 22 was the gateway drug to my horrendous slide into addiction. I'm eating turkey twizzlers and drinking luminous orange fizz right at this moment as a little snack before my takeaway kebab.

justasking111 · 08/12/2024 15:42

Saw a 1970s channel 5 series recently. Rusty Lee showed how to make these pancakes from scratch. It's really easy.

In Iceland this morning I bought frozen steak and kidney puddings and a tin of mushy peas. Was feeling nostalgic. ,😁

hazelnutvanillalatte · 08/12/2024 15:45

I would definitely get an Iceland festive bake or sausage roll but Findus/FB don't even seem like guilty pleasures to me. I would put them in the category of tinned sausages or old-school TV dinners - just not nice!! But I've never tried them so could be missing out on a world of pleasure

MassiveOvaryaction · 08/12/2024 15:46

@Jumell I'm not well and on fairly strong painkillers so have probably misunderstood but "I’ve read some things in mine" in your op to me suggests you're reading your Crispy Pancakes like tea leaves?! What else do they say?

Fwiw I bought some a few years ago when I saw them as had fond memories of second degree burns from childhood. They were smaller than I remember and tasted of disappointment 😞

Still love a Fray Bentos pie (or better yet, steak pudding) though.

AInightingale · 08/12/2024 15:47

I really like Iceland's frozen Chinese stirfry vegetables (only £2) and their Mediterranean vegetables, their frozen garlic and ginger and their 'No Bull' burgers. Also seems to be the cheapest place to buy Heinz tomato ketchup.

justasking111 · 08/12/2024 15:50

I remember tinned mince being tasty as a child and chicken in white wine sauce.

Ok your post has LITERALLY made me lol!!

Im so sorry but this was a typo that I meant to correct !! The sentence should read

‘read some things online’

BUT - you’ve given me a great idea - I might try and read Crispy Pancakes like tea leaves and see how I get on !! I’ll of course report back !!

it would be interesting to see how we’ll all fare in 2025 , would it not ?

would anyone be potentially interested in my reading of you’re pancakes ?

(not a euphemism!)

I need to be more careful with autocorrect !!

Any remembrance of French Bread Pizza?

Top tier they were, I basically lived on them for about a year! I would go through 'food phases' and only eat about 3 foods on rotation for months or a year then never touch them again once I'd moved on, I remember my Admirals Pie phase quite fondly. I'm assuming Admirals Pie is also outing me as a povvo 😂

UndeniablyGenX · 08/12/2024 15:54

They're not the same since Birdseye took them over.

Toast Toppers.
Ketchips.

I really want toast toppers to return. Lovely, salty goodness. And cheap and easy and pretty filling.
