To ask if there’s a social class issue surrounding Findus Crispy Pancakes ?

I’ve read some things in mine and sort of sense this might be the case but not 100% sure

Also is there a class issue around Fray Bentos pies ?

I love those !

I'm working class but mother had standards. Neither would enter our home - she baked her own yummy pies.

Ok your post has LITERALLY made me lol!!

Im so sorry but this was a typo that I meant to correct !! The sentence should read

‘read some things online’

BUT - you’ve given me a great idea - I might try and read Crispy Pancakes like tea leaves and see how I get on !! I’ll of course report back !!

it would be interesting to see how we’ll all fare in 2025 , would it not ?

would anyone be potentially interested in my reading of you’re pancakes ?

(not a euphemism!)

I need to be more careful with autocorrect !!

Grin

Also lol @ "not a euphemism"!

I wonder what sort of thing they'd be able to tell us?

Definitely. Really bad UPFs. Have ever and would never buy.

I don't think the term 'ultra processed foods' had been coined back in the 70s.

The only people with a problem with these foods are snobs.

thisoldcity · 08/12/2024 16:11

I'm very old so remember when convenience foods, freezers etc first came in. My mum, being a war era child, took to it all with enthusiasm as it was easy and quick and I loved the crispy pancakes, boil in the bag cod in sauce, instant mash. I was a very fussy eater but would eat all that stuff. It was before the invention of the term 'junk food' I think! I'd also like to mention tinned strawberries and tinned cream. Yum.

Bringithere · 08/12/2024 16:22

Thisoldcity same here. My DP got a huge chest freezer as soon as they were on the market and my DM loved the convenience. For some reason, she didn’t get Findus Crispy pancakes though. We really missed out there. And now I think about it I remember a Fray Bentos pie that was in the larder for years but never got opened . M

TitaniasAss · 08/12/2024 16:23

Bloody love a Fray Bentos pie. I really don't care what anyone thinks about what I eat. I eat well 90 percent of the time so a wee pie every now and again is no issue imo.

I was raised on Findus Crispy Pancakes. How did they manage to stay hotter than the sun on the inside for so long when I wanted to eat it!!

Do you know anyone who worked for McDonald's? Their apple pies were the same so they could provably tell you.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/12/2024 16:33

@Keleshey

Solidarity!

ProfYaffle · 08/12/2024 16:34

If I had a time machine the first thing I'd do is go back to the 70s and see if the junk food actually tastes like my memories or not.

I used to love Crispy pancakes and Fray Bentos pies but they taste horrible now, I don't if it's me or them that has changed.

MrsCarson · 08/12/2024 16:36

I loved them too, I think a lot of people consider them to be quite low rent.

Cattyisbatty · 08/12/2024 16:46

Never had either and I'm m/c. We did have Vienetta though in the 80s. All my mum's freezer had was peas, ice cream (see above) and possibly some fish. She did add the odd ready meal once my dad had died as he was a health nut and vegetarian. We were partial to an M&S fish kiev on occasion, but she mainly cooked from scratch (and made her own chips).

Crikeyalmighty · 08/12/2024 16:50

@thisoldcity ooh I liked tinned cream too

thisoldcity · 08/12/2024 16:55

@Crikeyalmighty it took me years to actually like fresh cream like other people!

Covidwoes · 08/12/2024 17:02

I just wouldn't touch them because I think they wouldn't be nice. I can't imagine a tinned pie being tasty! I could be wrong, however. The quality of the meat in them also doesn't appeal.

Why not try one. It's a couple of quid, could change your life.

tsmainsqueeze · 08/12/2024 17:20

In the early days of my relationship my now husband who's a northerner would ask me to get him a fray bentos pie and i would hide it under the other stuff in the trolley as i was so embarrassed to be seen buying something so 'common' .
I couldn't give a stuff now and my son loves them too ,i'm also not ashamed to say i buy spam !

muddyford · 08/12/2024 17:31

justasking111 · 08/12/2024 15:50

I remember tinned mince being tasty as a child and chicken in white wine sauce.

I bought both at the start of the pandemic, the steak rather than mince, and with fresh veg they were good. Surprisingly little crap in too. Tinned things are generally OK in that department

Hoardasauruskaren · 08/12/2024 17:44

Are you my sister? 🤣🤣
We went from convienence foods like crispy pancakes, fis fingers etc to frozen ready meals or boil in the bag curries when they reached these parts! Always had a home cooked meal with fresh veg & meat on a Sunday but absolute shit the rest of the week ! Always homemade chips though till the 90s! Most of my friends ate similar diets & we all lived in council houses. I don’t think I knew any mc ppl growing up !

My kids have never seen a crispy pancake afaik! I learned to cook when my eldest was born & try to keep processed foods to a minimum. We’re deffo still wc but I think people have more awareness of health etc now and try to give their kids the best they can within the budget they have.

ETA : I say we ate shit but I loved most of the UPF I ate growing up! Crispy pancakes were a fave as were pies of any description! Don’t think we had Fray Bentos though! Mainly frozen ones!

That’s great I admit I rely far too much than I ideally want to on processed foods

Well I’m far from perfect but I have learned over the years! Probably eat too many takeaways though! Too tempting after a long week at work to order a curry on a Friday night!

To those mentioning horse meat, I used to eat horse meat steak in France and it was lovely.

Yummybumble · 08/12/2024 19:07

I have never even heard of either of those things! What are they?!
