I’ve read some things in mine and sort of sense this might be the case but not 100% sure

Also is there a class issue around Fray Bentos pies ?

I love those !

........and possibly that you’re likely to be suicidal before you’re reduced to eating one

Harsh.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 08/12/2024 12:24

Frozen peas are ok if you’re middle class, surely?

username299 · 08/12/2024 12:24

Absolutely no idea. My mum only ever cooked from scratch and I've never had either. She even made chips.

wizzywig · 08/12/2024 12:24

Chowtime · 08/12/2024 12:15

The only frozen food the middle classes are allowed to buy are 100% cod fish fingers.

Omega fish fingers dear

GroovyChick87 · 08/12/2024 12:25

I'm working class. I've never had a Findus pancake and I don't like Fray Bentos pies. Probably because I've never been able to open the tin.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/12/2024 12:25

Any remembrance of French Bread Pizza?

wombat15 · 08/12/2024 12:25

I am in my late fifties and have never had either. Are they still available?

JubileeJuice · 08/12/2024 12:25

We had Findus Crispy Pancakes as one of our school lunches in my private school in the 80s. Golden Drummers too.

quantumbutterfly · 08/12/2024 12:26

I used to love fray bentos pies & findus pancakes, they were quite the novelty for people brought up on basic British food, and very handy when camping.
We were brought up with school dinners of spam fritters, chicken supreme, semolina&rose hip syrup....tastes have changed somewhat.

This is completely true. My parents were dentists and I have never had a crispy pancake OR a Fray Bentos pie. I'm 52.

Am I missing out?

I’ve also never heard of these two products or seen them. I can’t understand why pancake mix is sold- is it literally egg/flour/milk mixed together already? Seems like a lot of faff to me

MonkeyToHeaven · 08/12/2024 12:26

Yes, because they're basically a folded cloth cap with a filling.

NavyTiger · 08/12/2024 12:26

Used to love the ham and cheese ones with baked beans and chips

Damn those disabled people who want to make pancakes.

The Queen was partial to a Fray Bentos pie. 👸

Only joking, I have no idea.

My extremely posh step grandmother (wore a tartan skirt and headscarf to climb hills) liked a Fray Bentos.
So I'll bet money on the Queen liking them.

I was raised on Findus Crispy Pancakes. How did they manage to stay hotter than the sun on the inside for so long when I wanted to eat it!!

Findus crispy pancakes used to be made in tyneside…I knew a girl who was the factory expert on them! She said the ones made for supermarket own brands were inferior to findus brand as findus used the best quality ingredients in their own.
Unfortunately the inferno in your mouth when they were cooked made it impossible to tell any difference.
Still love ‘em!

Chicken supreme? I think that might have been what we called cat meat pie.

Measuring out flour and milk and breaking an egg is the faff. Mix involves pouring water up to the line in the plastic bottle.

To Fray Benton Pies, Findus Crispy Pancakes and Vesta Chow Mein...

I see you and raise you... Brains Faggotts!

Jumell · 08/12/2024 12:28

The only time the university educate middle classes should eat ‘pizza’ is if they’re in holiday in Tuscany and go to one of these authentic artisan eateries where they can be served homemade ‘pizza’ exactly as the Italian housewives traditionally made it while looking out on a vineyard, a glass of white wine in hand

they’re absolutely NOT allowed to eat this foodstuff in the UK and CERTAINLY not a ready made one from a supermarket

has difficulty typing ready made and supermarket

Not to mention Cod in Butter Sauce... a special treat.:)

BlackForestCake · 08/12/2024 12:29

Crispy pancakes are a knock off of Jamaican patties and the middle classes make their own from a recipe that Jemima brought back from Kingston when backpacking.

Scutterbug · 08/12/2024 12:30

I didn’t realise you can still get the pancakes! Never had a frey bentos pie.

Current picture of part of my food cupboard, showing a Fray Bentos Meaty Pud.

I'm a bit embarrassed about the Honest Value Carrots though. Not to mention the Honest Value Kidney Beans.

And the tin of Spam which is trying to hide behind the Fray Bentos Meaty Pud.
