Just that really.

What kind of things do they like in general? Have they got good stamina ? I suppose it depends how they live their lives. Would love some feedback on things like -

kind of things they’d like to receive for birthdays /Xmas

music they like?

in case someone’s asking - I’ve got a little crush 🤣

I’m sure this is a joke, and it’s a good one, but this is how care homes still think old people want Vera Lynn instead of The Supremes. 85 year olds only retired in 2004! Your 56 year old was in his 20s in the 90s. He likes Portishead.

I love all the bands I’ve listed MUCH more than the likes of Blur and Oasis

NOT ASHAMED !!!

Exactly this!

Jumell · 05/12/2024 08:46

I could get him a compilation take of hits by :

Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich
Tremeloes
Manfred Man
Amen Corner
The Move
Herman’s Hernits
Small Faces

What fabulous music there was back then !

Err that’s more something my 82 year old dad would appreciate.

My 50/60 something male friends would prefer listening to MAW, Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, Sandy Rivera, Roger Sanchez, Dave Lee JN, Todd Terry, Lil Louis, Dimitri From Paris- that sort of thing

borntoblossom · 05/12/2024 09:25

In my experience, potentially all the boring things about old men, with all the annoying things you might experience with a 15 year old

But I'm sure they're not all like that 😂

mamajong · 05/12/2024 09:25

DH is slightly younger, but he loves football and anything related to his team. He likes fishing so appreciates bits of fishing tackle, warm gloves and a decent flask. Music wise he likes rock, early dance and britpop. Food wise he eats anything but prefers 'traditional' food like steak, roast dinner & stew. He goes to the gym but his workouts are more low-key and he doesn't do much cardio beyond hiking

SmellToGetWell · 05/12/2024 09:26

Jumell · 05/12/2024 08:58

True true !!

if love to buy a car from his year of birth. Maybe an F registration Austin Morris ?!

birthday is January

Given your current food budget is £30 a month, I’m not sure you’re going to be in the running for a classic car by new year.

Anyway - the answer to your question is: Greggs. They love Greggs.

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/12/2024 09:03

@Jumell you may do but does he? My late 70s dad would think your list was old fashioned and dull - he was all about the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and protest singers liks Joan Baez

My mum, a similar age was really really into Jazz - Miles Davies, Ornette Coleman etc..

Ah you see I’d be a bit more ‘mainstream’ 60s than your late Dad - I like

Hollies
Tremeloes
Manfred Man
Amen Corner
Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky Mick and Tich

admittedly low brow and not at all political !

Mummyratbag · 05/12/2024 09:26

As others have said they aren't one group of same thinking humans...BUT .. I would generalise that people in their 50s tend to know where their politics lie and are less likely to swing radically from Left to Right or vice/versa (if interested in politics), even the most open minded person will know their likes and dislikes and give fewer fucks what other people think!

Generally less bothered with drama and realise that life is short. Most will have experienced loss by this age. I would say that although I(we) can still suffer from anxiety, we are less likely to be sweating stuff that was important in our 20s. I save my dark thoughts for the bigger things!

There is likely to be no rush for commitment/babies if that is what you are after, especially if they have had both.

That said I'm female and I AM generalising ..

Blingismything · 05/12/2024 09:27

Maybe this list will help:

Cricket
Tennis
Football
War films
Scandi Noir
Radio 2
Nose hair trimmers
Having a nice lawn
Ales/beer
Tinkering with cars
Holiday planning

Researching all of the above

Then your 82 year old Dad has fab taste imo 🙌

Absolutely. My mum is 80 and her era of music was Motown, Philadelphia and other soul acts. She used to go to Ronnie Scott’s back in the 60’s.

I took her to see Gladys Knight earlier in the year - think she’d cut her ears off rather than listen to back to back Vera Lynn and the like

Runsyd · 05/12/2024 09:27

They need to get their prostate checked.

PollyPaulina · 05/12/2024 09:27

You seem not to know much about him, like if I were gifting an adult I'd think of their hobbies and lifestyle above age.

I'm guessing you're in your 30s with a crush on someone you have limited conversations with like, school headteacher or secret santa for a colleague or boss... you know we'll just keep on inventing scenarios until you tell us!! 😁

BellissimoGecko · 05/12/2024 09:28

What a weird question. Do they have stamina?! Like they are all the same...

He’s always been the one member of the family with the least interest in music tbh. My mum, my sister and I are music obsessed whereas he’s easily pleased with easy listening lift music.

You must be aware though that these bands are unlikely to be popular with men in their 50s surely? People who lived through punk, new wave, goth, 80s synth pop, hip hop, reggae, Madchester, rave, techno, trip hop, Brit pop, metal, emo etc, etc are unlikely to be grooving to Manfred Mann.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 05/12/2024 09:29

Depends on the guy!

My (around about) 56 year old DH likes role playing (D&D type), dice sets, the odd dragon, electronics, cacti, cats, an occasional bottle of port, science & astronomy.

He thinks watching football is a waste of time, as it’s, “22 grown men kicking an inflated pig’s bladder around a muddy field.”

As a lifelong Man Utd supporter myself, that’s tantamount to heresy.

PollyPaulina · 05/12/2024 09:31

First sentence on NHS webpage on ED is this:
Erectile dysfunction (impotence) is very common, particularly in men over 40.

But of course most men will say 'not I!! rata tat tat!!'

Moonlightstars · 05/12/2024 09:31

username299 · 05/12/2024 08:03

What kind of things do they like in general?
Watching sports, bird watching, DIY, fast cars and gardening.

Have they got good stamina ?
They can walk up a flight of stairs without pausing.

birthdays /Xmas
4 cans of premium lager and some pork scratchings.

music they like
Oasis, The Jam, Chemical Brothers, The Orb and Blondie.

If walking up stairs without having to stop means you have good stamina, I must be an Olympian 😁

Sounds like my dad. Subjected us to middle of the road early 60s. My dad’s music taste ended from things got interesting in the 60s.

My dad used to listen to Readers Digest easy listening compilations 🙄

personally I MUCH prefer Manfred Mann to Britpop!!

Everyone of a certain age on this thread - do you remember those dreadful Top Of The Pops compilation albums they used to sell in Woolies. It was the top 20 hits each month sung by session singers and there was always a scantily clad young woman on the cover.

Deathraystare · 05/12/2024 09:38

@Patterncarmen
I like the sound of your husband! Obvs you do too! Fellow punk music lover.

The Damned are not heavy metal.

I was going to say this 🤣
