To ask about 56 year old men?

Jumell · 05/12/2024 07:58

Just that really.

What kind of things do they like in general? Have they got good stamina ? I suppose it depends how they live their lives. Would love some feedback on things like -

kind of things they’d like to receive for birthdays /Xmas

music they like?

in case someone’s asking - I’ve got a little crush 🤣

how old are you, OP?

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/12/2024 08:59

Ok troll. I'm out.

In case you are by any chance sincere men in their mid fifties were born in the late sixites to early seventies. The music of their youth is Indie guitar bands, Britpop, House music, reggae, old school hip hop. Not the fucking Tremeloes.

Also you don't stop liking new music whem you leave your twenties.

Can we have more info on the crush?

Lean handsome and virile 🙌

Excellent! In that case, the 56 year old men I know like beer, chocolate, cheese. Dress in shirts and chinos. Like pyjamas and a good pair of slippers and own two labradors.

But for goodness sake, don't get a 55 or 57 year old man anything connected to the above - they are soooo different!! 😂 😂

What's he like? Is he a nice one?

FatOaf · 05/12/2024 09:00

Would love a multi pack of blancmange (Princes brand, nothing but the best)

For me it would really have to be Pearce Duff. Still available, apparently, although I don't think any supermarkets sell it anymore.

A nice portion of braised liver & onions followed by raspberry blancmange. Yum.

But I'm 61, so a different generation.

I MUCH prefer Tremeloes to all of that !

See this is very generic. My dh is a couple of years younger than 56. He likes watching sports and cars but hates diy and gardening. Isn't a bird watcher. He doesn't drink and loves heavy metal /rock. He's got great stamina. Asking what an age group like is ridiculous as everyone is different. Take him as a individual and find out what he likes.

I presumed this was a joke, it made me laugh anyway.

Do all 30 year old men like the same thing? Is there an age when they suddenly do?

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/12/2024 09:03

@Jumell you may do but does he? My late 70s dad would think your list was old fashioned and dull - he was all about the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and protest singers liks Joan Baez

My mum, a similar age was really really into Jazz - Miles Davies, Ornette Coleman etc..

CautiousLurker1 · 05/12/2024 09:03

My DH is a nearly 56yo man. All his friends are 55-60. Every single one of them is different. If you have a crush, you must have an idea of ‘who’ he is and what he might like? IME though, men that age tend to have everything they like and the means to buy things as needed/wanted. Makes xmas/birthday shopping bloody annoying and frustrating actually…

blackwithlight · 05/12/2024 09:03

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 05/12/2024 08:54

How close is his birthday? You wouldn't want to buy something suitable for a 56 year old man if he is turning 57 in a few weeks.

😁

pumpkinpillow · 05/12/2024 09:04

I am mid 50s. My male peers like playing the ukulele, cross country running, dogs, foreign language films, travel, craft beer.

FrenchandSaunders · 05/12/2024 09:05

Red wine
Family time with his DCs
Nice meals out
Holidays and weekends away
Cinema
Gym
Classic cars
DIY

SquidGaming · 05/12/2024 09:06

OP, have you answered about how old you are?? This feels relevant, somehow....

Katemax82 · 05/12/2024 09:10

My husband is soon 53...he has more stamina than I have

booisbooming · 05/12/2024 09:12

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/12/2024 08:39

Mr Monkey is a 55 year old man and likes, in no particular order:

Marathon running
Travel
Expensive Japanese denim
House music
Hip Hop
Music festivals
Fancy beer
Crisps
Parkrun
Watching youtube videos of people talking about trainers
Football (playing and watching)
Going to the pub
Bagels
Stewart Lee
Late 1980s New York art (Basquiat, Hareing etc..)

I'll let you know if when he turns 56 he becomes all about garden centres and M&S cords.

Edited

This list is accurate for all the Gen X 6 Music dads I know too, best one so far.

Rubyupbeat · 05/12/2024 09:12

All 56 year old men are not the same, just like all 20 year old men are not the same. They don't all like the same music, clothing styles etc...
It's a rather silly thing ask.

Screamingabdabz · 05/12/2024 09:14

My DH is in that age group. He likes going to gym but still likes beer so he is strong and he has stamina, but has a beer belly. Loves Rugby. Loves politics. Likes to ‘read up’ on things whether it’s the most economical kettle to buy, or something obscure like orchid growers in Kurdistan.

He is quite old fashioned and says things like ‘you don’t get good music any more’ which gives me the ick slightly.

As men get older they lose their testosterone so he gets very sentimental and soppy which also gives me the ick as my menopausal testosterone levels are coming to fore and I want to tell him to get a grip.

They love to loftily monologue and mansplain occasionally. (Also ick central).

He is very independent and does not rely on me for the domestics. He is perfectly capable of shopping, cooking, washing, ironing etc. we don’t even discuss it. I hate that that is even noteworthy but it is quite unusual in that age group of men I think.

He is also emotionally intelligent, mellow, caring, numerous, generous, capable, trustworthy. I’m not sure all men that age are!

The men he works with (of similar age) all seem quite conservative, compliant, gentle humour, caring, various stereotypical hobbies (golf, cycling, fine dining, travel etc)

Good luck!

Worldgonecrazy · 05/12/2024 09:14

When I go out to concerts to bands that attract that age group, the majority look like Homer Simpson, zero stamina, like drinking, think they still look 18, and wonder why their wives no longer want to have sex with them.

TwoLeggedGrooveMachine · 05/12/2024 09:15

My 54 year old likes music from late 60s to now. Listens to 6 music and goes to loads of gigs and festivals. Loves old cars and road trips. Likes most alcoholic drinks. Has lots of minor health issues including arthritis but this doesn’t seem to bother him in the bedroom. Is a hard working devoted family man. Not someone who would catch the eye of a younger woman I don’t think. I’ve had him for over 30 years so I don’t think he’s bothered about trading me in.

OP your list of bands is what my late father would have listened to, and why would someone like a car from the year of their birth unless really in to classic cars. More likely to love music and cars from their youth surely?

booisbooming · 05/12/2024 09:18

Jumell · 05/12/2024 08:46

I could get him a compilation take of hits by :

Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich
Tremeloes
Manfred Man
Amen Corner
The Move
Herman’s Hernits
Small Faces

What fabulous music there was back then !

I’m sure this is a joke, and it’s a good one, but this is how care homes still think old people want Vera Lynn instead of The Supremes. 85 year olds only retired in 2004! Your 56 year old was in his 20s in the 90s. He likes Portishead.

TwistedWonder · 05/12/2024 09:19

As a 58 year old woman I can tell you I know a lot of men my age who were ravers back in the day and still into house music and raving now (all be it day raves mostly)

My 59 year old ex DH loves The Jam, The Who and a lot of 80’s nostalgia

My 55 year old work colleague is an ex punk who loves the Pistols, Damned etc

So even musically it’s a wide spread before you even start on hobbies etc

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 05/12/2024 09:21

Assuming

  1. this is real and
  2. he was born in 1968. https://www.vintagewineandport.co.uk/products/Sandeman-1968-Vintage-Port-2 I'd like it (even though '68 wasn't a great year for port 🤣)

This wins post of the day for me 😆🙌

Which kind of spam btw - the unwanted comms or the cheap meat variety?

Also, do you think they'll stretch to Angel Delight at a push? 😅

Hates spam the luncheon meat, weirdly loves spam the unsolicited mail... and no, never angel delight.

He is a complex and many faceted character.
