To ask about 56 year old men?

Just that really.

What kind of things do they like in general? Have they got good stamina ? I suppose it depends how they live their lives. Would love some feedback on things like -

kind of things they’d like to receive for birthdays /Xmas

music they like?

in case someone’s asking - I’ve got a little crush 🤣

Not quite reached 56, but two of my siblings have and parents are both alive. Dh - one passed away when he was around the age of 56 (but has older sibling who passed this age at that point ), the other three years later.

Thinking around my friends of this age, there’s a mix of people with one, both or no parents.

certainly an interesting observation that around mid fifties is when you could start loosing your parents.

ah thats nice for your siblings to have both parents still at this age

yeah I know that people’s circs vary by this age but this is an age where people do say there’s lots of competing responsibilities- sandwich generation etc

Stamina? 56 is not old. My husband is 58. He has a 12-inch bright green Mohawk, listens to psychobilly, works out, and gets regular pedicures. Probably not at all what you were thinking men of that age are like. He looks about 40 or possibly younger and has more energy than many young people we know.

Jumell · 06/12/2024 07:58

Yeah sorry just to clarify my more recent post on this thread re my mum was more to do with the general ‘sandwich generation’ dilemma and not my 56 year old crush !

DH is in this category and likes;
Music - ska/reggae specifically
Football esp anything to do with his team
Cricket
Any gadget known to man (but it's best if he buys them)
Travelling
Eating out/food in general
Beer
Comedy
Theatre
Cinema
Netflix

He's not quite the pipe and slippers brigade yet, but he's getting there...

Usually I will get him something related to his football team, tickets to a gig or show, some aftershave if he's running out, maybe an item of clothing if something grabs my eye!

Thank you to everyone who’s contributed to this thread - I’m really grateful for all your contributions.

However - I’ve just - this minute actually - thought of this.

I know this is realistically away from the main topic of the actual thread - and maybe merits another thread of its own in a way as it’s an important topic which everyone faces even if it affects some worse than others.

When my mum woke up on the morning of her 56th birthday - she had 2 parents both still alive - and ostensibly both living independently.

(I think she knew that there was deterioration physically and mentally a bit but this is subjective and even if one realises this, it’s not a situation you can necessarily go in ‘all guns blazing’ - if you see what I mean).

However by her 57th birthday - this had all drastically changed. In the space of a year she’d gone from 2 parents living independently to 0 parents living independently.

Out of interest - is it normal yo wake up on your 56th birthday and have both parents living independently or was she rather luckier than most here ?

is 56/57 an age where issues with issues with elderly parents are at their height?

I know I’ve changed this topic from being lighthearted to serious - but it’s a situation which, as a part of life virtually everyone can relate to.

Good question, OP!
Out of me and DH, he just has his mum alive who is nearly 90!
My dad died in his late 50s, my mum was in her early 70s.
I'm early 50s. Dh is late 50s/
Out of my friends I'd say it's a real mix (we're a mix from early 50s to early 60s)
Most of my friends my age - 52/53. I'd say it was majority one parent alive still, but some still have both. Myself and another close friend have neither parent living. Majorty of over 60s are either no parents alive or one hanging on by a thread!
My MIL's DM died in her late 90s and MIL was in her late 60s then. Another relative of DH is in her mid-90s and her DS is in his mid-70s, but that is rare (and she has lost a DD already).

TwistedWonder · 06/12/2024 11:28

I’m 59 and very lucky to have both parents alive and in relatively good health.

Like the PP it’s mix with friends, some lost both parents fairly young (1 lost both 3 weeks apart both in their 50’s), others still have one parent and a few like me still have both going strong into their 80’s. One friend still has her mum at 101

Wow that’s excellent about your parents and your friends who still have theirs going strong ❤️🙌

Thank you - ah a mixed bag then !

I agree it’s rare to be in one’s 70s and have a parent alive - these are very much exceptions - not the rule !

My Dad was 26 losing his last parent and my mum was 59 ! Such a differential !

HooMoo · 06/12/2024 17:58

I think it’s completely individual. My dad is a couple of years older than that I likes running ultras so 50 mile races and other madness! But I’d say that is quite unusual.

Most men I think would like some nice craft beers maybe. Or clothes? My dad never buys his own clothes! So me and my mum have to make sure he’s looking presentable! Or he’d keep wearing jeans with holes in from 20 years ago!

Had is occurred to you that 56 year old men vary as much as 56 year old women? Why on earth would we know the answers to those questions if we’ve never met the guy.
i fear for your intelligence level that you can’t work out that asking the internet this question isn’t going to be fruitful.

MadeInYorkshire69 · 06/12/2024 19:27

I’m just about to go into my 56th year. I’d say the male friends I still have from schooldays (some) are a little bit stuck in the past music taste wise, not very PC ( in that they make jokes about sexist things etc) but other than that are fairly young at heart. And the football ….

MaroonedinWales · 06/12/2024 19:41

My wife tells me the thing that most men like best is talking about themselves. I concur and on that basis just spend time listening and smiling and you'll win his heart for sure. After a few weeks of this you find an urge to stab that heart with a steak knife though...

My DH is 53 (and a little bit younger than me). He likes cricket, rugby union, snooker and F1. He’s a hunting/fishing/shooting type, loves a good musical, rock and heavy metal. He likes to cook, loves to eat game and fish and drinks red wine, real ale, good whisky and the odd G&T. He also has a very eclectic taste in books and films. Oh and he loves really good coffee (grinds his own beans oooer). He is the total polar opposite to me (and his two brothers). Hope this helps a bit 🤣🤣

Tbh if I buy some St Ivel Gold spread , cottage cheese and Ryvita, - maybe I can ‘manifest’ 1986 - the year he turned 18?

its 1986 folks !!! 🙌
