Husbands ideas are annoying

NarcoosseeLover · 02/12/2024 19:28

My husband is full of ideas. Some better than others, but most are just fads.

Example - Make homemade yoghurt; pay for a ghost writer to write a book; eat more eggs; produce own aftershave etc etc

In isolation, the ideas are fine, but he goes all in at the first instance.

So I have a kitchen full of electrical gadgets and ingredients we’ll never use; a fridge full of multiple trays of eggs; a cupboard full of funnels, essential oils and alcohol etc.
I just about get through having a clear out and making space in the cupboards, only for him to have a bunch of ideas and fill them again.

It’s driving me up the wall. He’s in the kitchen making large quantities of yoghurt. I don’t want any. I’d rather pick up a pot from Aldi personally.

Is it just mine or does anyone else have one of these husbands? How do you manage?

Disclaimer, I have OCD and stress about organisation and things having their place, so it does make me feel quite cross.

DH is a bit like this. He has ADHD and flits from hobby to hobby - our spare room and garage are both full of stuff that he's only used once or twice.

I put everything in boxes and shove it in the spare room and shut the door on it, lol.

Whatthefudge40 · 02/12/2024 19:30

I mean he has ADHD, you know this right?
He sounds fun
Could you help draw his interest to something you could both.enjoy/appreciate

Mummanorman · 02/12/2024 19:31

Sounds lots like my husband who has adhd. He will 'hyperfocus' on a task or activity. It's all consuming for him and he's 100% all in until our of the blue. Sometimes a few days or weeks and occasionally months when he will never do it again! My house is also full of random hobbies from board games to waffle machines!
No advice but sounded like something my husband does too x

LilacLilyBird · 02/12/2024 19:32

Mine who can't really cook decided to move everything around in the kitchen one time

Drove me bonkers because of course you reach for things automatically

I changed it all back

PortiasBiscuit · 02/12/2024 19:32

At least he doesn’t play golf..

overmydeadbody · 02/12/2024 19:34

I have a good friend who becomes obsessive about learning new things, and will buy all the bits, spend months perfecting whatever it is, and then move on to then next thing. He becomes incredibly knowledgeable and talks about nothing else in the heights of the obsession. Once he's mastered it the interest wains

Photography. Mountain biking. Pizza making. Sourdough bread making. Cocktails. Coffee....

It has it's benefits as a friend, but his wife dispairs of all the stuff!

Tireddadplus · 02/12/2024 19:37

can you get him a shed? My hobbies aren’t allowed in the house. In return there is no discussion about cost of said hobbies. Everyone is happy.

NarcoosseeLover · 02/12/2024 19:40

My husband never masters anything. I would start a hobby with him, but I know which way it’ll go.

I predict I have a fridge full of vile “yoghurt”, that he won’t end up eating and then everything will get left somewhere, but I won’t be able to get rid of it, just incase he wants it again soon..he won’t.

I do suspect ADHD. He is dyslexic so he’s already read the yoghurt instructions wrong. I just want to relax after we’ve both worked all day. Grrr!

You have to learn to just ignore him, lol. DH's other habit is to come down and start tidying a random drawer or cupboard at 8pm Hmm

Hugmorecats · 02/12/2024 19:41

My ex was like this. Our house was overloaded with stuff, things he had picked up on a whim and used once or twice. A fondue machine, a home brewing kit, bread baking equipment, welding etc etc. luckily he left and took it with him (or left it behind and I threw it out, a whole room full of stuff donated to charity or taken to the dump)

That’s more like me. I do like a good tidy up.

Oh dear, I think I’m a bit like this. Just had a clear out of bits and bobs I’ve started and never finished. I don’t have ADHD though, just a low boredom threshold!

Haha, so do I, but not at 8pm - that's sofa snacking time Grin

ManhattanPopcorn · 02/12/2024 19:47

Classic ADHD.

JetskiSkyJumper · 02/12/2024 19:48

Yes. If he likes something or wants to start a new hobby he wants the best most expensive stuff and I know it will be a 5 minute fad...

Golf is great!!!

They fuck off for hours and hours.

Mind you, it's best if they don't talk about it afterwards .

Yep! I dread to think.

Logic - this aftershave is £100. It would be far more economical for me to buy all of the individual oils and containers and then make it myself! …oh, that didn’t work.

Figures.
Guessing he's given a lot of things a go

Hoppinggreen · 02/12/2024 19:54

My DH is a bit like this but most of his obsessions don't take up much room. Currently its fermentation so we have Saukraut, Kombucha and Kefir all over the place. He also has a couple of IT projects on the go.
The annoying thing is that he gets a bit obsessed and tunnel visioned, I was asleep around midnight last night and he burst through the bedroom door to ask a question related to one of the projects
The one I hated most was Keto - he smelt weird and glared at any of us eating carbs.

Oh this made me laugh! I know your husband so well without knowing him.

My husband did 4 weeks of keto.

We haven’t done fermentation yet…I bet that one is soon!

He watches way too much bloody YouTube!

I am your husband. I was nicknamed Toad as a child, as in Toad of Toad Hall because of my short-lived obsessions.

Most recently I took up tennis, spent hundreds on all the kit, played three times a week, joined a club, watched loads of Netflix documentaries. Then I missed a week (holiday) and literally forgot all about it until I saw my tennis racket in my boot a month later.

That’s about right. Will you ever go back to Tennis now?

My husband might have…but he’d leave a 3-4 year gap before revisiting the idea 💡

Oh don't get me started on Youtube - its chess, aliens and economics along with dogs meeting puppies (I actually really like the last one)

NarcoosseeLover · 02/12/2024 20:05

My husbands view list includes Dr Burg, some guy that talks about fitness and food, and another guy that talks about alchemy. He also likes funny cat videos.
