Sushi restaurant drama

After reading another similar post I had to get opinions on if I was unreasonable.

I was at a sushi train a few weeks ago with DH and kids. It was close to closing time so there wasn’t a huge selection left. At the booth next to us were four kids, their parents ( four adults) were at the booth opposite the kids. My kids were loudly calling out what they wanted, and as the food went past the table of kids before us they took everything my kids wanted. Despite telling my kids to stop calling out what they wanted, it continued. The kids at the next table had quite a bit of half eaten sushi piled up, the parents hadn’t noticed. I know I should have told the parents their kids were being silly, but due to being a little hangry I said I wanted octopus balls, it was the most expensive plate colour and there were a few, and this is when the parents realised what was happening. They were not pleased, one of the men picked up the plates and put them on our table and said we were paying for it. I grabbed the couple of plates we had actually eaten from and went to the checkout and explained what happened. I only paid what I should have.
A couple of friends said I should have paid for at least some of it.
Was I in the wrong?

With the exception of some farmed species, the law requires that fish served as sushi or sashimi has to have been flash-frozen for this very reason.

Except some encysted worms do still get through- hence the people getting infected.
With the seal population expanding, there are more of these worms than ever before.

{Only became aware of them after news articles on them}

YANBU in the slightest, OP.

I hope the lazy negligent parents had to pay for all the expensive food their selfish, petty children took purely because they thought you wanted it.

No idea WTF your friend is thinking, saying you should have paid for food their horrible children took (but you didn't take or eat).

Bollindger · 27/11/2024 14:58

I have too laugh as 15 years ago I found out next door was just like those children...
But my 6 year old was playing your part.
I keep asking her what she wanted for Christmas and she laughed so hard and admitted she had cost the mum a fortune.
She also snopped and knew she had the hamsters and told next door and cost the mum as an £8 toy was going for £80, plus all the bits £200 in total.
She is still proud of it to this day.

BunnyLake · 27/11/2024 15:04

I can’t eat octopus anymore since finding out they are very intelligent and affectionate creatures.

Can’t really work out what was happening but you weren’t those kids babysitters so I don’t see why you should pay.

Who leaves their kids unsupervised at a sushi conveyor belt?

BunnyLake · 27/11/2024 15:07

I’m quite confused by the whole set up. I’ve never been to a sushi place where you shout your order, sounds very loud and chaotic.

HarrietBond · 27/11/2024 15:09

I don’t think anyone was shouting orders. I think OP’s kids were watching the belt and calling out things like ‘I want the salmon’, and the other kids were hearing and taking it first.

Thatdontimpressmemuchh · 27/11/2024 15:15

To be fair though you were allowing your children to shout across the restaurant which enables poor manners. The other children were closer so to be fair they had first dibs. The parents should have supervised their children better. If you were at yo sushi, it's a massive rip off anyway, you're better off going to an independent with table service. Cheaper and far better quality.

Lollypop701 · 27/11/2024 15:17

Can I go to a sushi train with your friend op… think she will pay for me if I let her have a taste of all the food I get😂…and I’m definitely trying the octopus balls

Grabyourpassportandmyhand · 27/11/2024 15:30

My kids love sushi conveyer belts.

Id love to know how much the obnoxious kids and equally obnoxious parents bill was!

On what grounds do your friends think you should have paid in part for their kids eating your first choice of sushi?

MzHz · 27/11/2024 15:33

You paid for what you took off the conveyor

fuck that dumb ass family. Maybe they’ll pay attention to their kids in future

Anuta77 · 27/11/2024 15:36

CRbear · 27/11/2024 07:41

whats with the childish humour?

no one laughs at “chicken balls” from the Chinese? And she would get millions of “what’s takoyaki?” if she had said that…

I understood that these were balls made from octopus meat...just like chicken balls are not testicles (I think).

samarrange · 27/11/2024 15:36

OP, not only YANBU, but also, this was a genius move to get the little CFs' DPs to understand the need to keep an eye on their kids. 👏👏👏

Peclet · 27/11/2024 15:40

Nothing but respect for you and your giant lady octopus balls

He almost certainly wasn’t and the only loser here will have been the restaurant, sadly.

Disgraceful, isn’t it?

Glittertwins · 27/11/2024 16:03

Cwazycupcake · 27/11/2024 10:24

Thanks all. My friend felt I should pay as I had goaded the kids into grabbing four expensive plates of food they wouldn’t eat.

I do promise to be more adventurous next time I get sushi.

Not your problem that the kids were greedy. It's quite obvious from that octopus grab that they were intentionally taking what others wanted just because they could and not because they wanted to eat it

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 27/11/2024 16:09

The only mistake you made here was taking DH and the kids and forgetting to bring your own lightning-tentacled highly trained octopus along to make sure you had first dibs on all the dishes. Not sure it would have appreciated those balls on the Sushi train though.

extrasushiplease · 27/11/2024 16:12

You are definitely not being unreasonable: Ignore your kids, reap the consequences. CF raising CFers: You hate to see it.

I can't eat octopus any more either. I've read too many books and seen too many heartwarming documentaries about them.
Pity: one of the best things I've ever eaten was takoyaki from a little stand in, of all places, Essaouira.

You don’t shout your order! You pick what you want off of the conveyor belt as it passes, and pay based on the empty plates you have left on your table at the end of the meal. OP’s DC were excitedly saying what they were wanting as they could see it coming down the conveyor belt. The CF children overheard OP’s children, and pulled the items from the conveyor belt as it passed, in order to deprive OP’s DC from getting what they wanted.

oakleaffy · 27/11/2024 16:30

@MarkWithaC Agree so much about the intelligence of 🐙 octopuses- Pigs too are incredibly bright.
A local butcher says the most humane meat ( in his experience) is shot wild deer 🦌- but these are expensive .

People eating octopus alive ( where they are fighting for life ) is grotesque.

IF animals are eaten, their lives and deaths should be as humane as possible. ( Anyone who has had rescued battery hens knows how happy these birds are and they still lay wonky eggs for you.💕

Thank you for explaining. Why are people finding it so hard to understand the scenario here? The OP was perfectly clear.

It’s really a massive dilemma for me. I don’t want to eat animals but at the same time I don’t want to be vegetarian and I definitely don’t want to be vegan.

I sometimes think when I’m living on my own I’ll go vegetarian.

I’ve been to lots of sushi places but I can’t see what’s coming down the conveyor belt until it’s practically on top of me. I can see the plates and the plastic dome covers but not the contents.
