Sushi restaurant drama

After reading another similar post I had to get opinions on if I was unreasonable.

I was at a sushi train a few weeks ago with DH and kids. It was close to closing time so there wasn’t a huge selection left. At the booth next to us were four kids, their parents ( four adults) were at the booth opposite the kids. My kids were loudly calling out what they wanted, and as the food went past the table of kids before us they took everything my kids wanted. Despite telling my kids to stop calling out what they wanted, it continued. The kids at the next table had quite a bit of half eaten sushi piled up, the parents hadn’t noticed. I know I should have told the parents their kids were being silly, but due to being a little hangry I said I wanted octopus balls, it was the most expensive plate colour and there were a few, and this is when the parents realised what was happening. They were not pleased, one of the men picked up the plates and put them on our table and said we were paying for it. I grabbed the couple of plates we had actually eaten from and went to the checkout and explained what happened. I only paid what I should have.
A couple of friends said I should have paid for at least some of it.
Was I in the wrong?

OP was at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant like Yo Sushi. You take your chosen plates from the belt and pay for what you have eaten. They are colour coded to correspond to the prices.

The obnoxious children at the next table were closer to the entry point of the food. They listened to OP’s children saying what they wanted and deliberately took it off the belt before it reached OP and family. Irritated by this, OP loudly said that she wanted one of the most expensive dishes on the menu. The obnoxious children duly took it and their parents only noticed once their children’s behaviour got expensive.

YANBU and the other adults should have supervised their children.

This is what I thought too and if this is the case YANBU OP. Their kids took the food off so not your responsibility.

Alwaysindependentlyopinionated · 27/11/2024 07:50

I'd never heard of a sushi train. I had to Google it.
The concept sounds total madness to me and that is crazy behaviour from the other customers and their children. Couldn't you have complained to staff about what was happening before you took the matter into your hands?
Not impressed by the thought of Octopus balls being used in this manner in this fiasco: I feel quite angry about the farming and consumption of these super intelligent creatures and I certainly wouldn't be eating them.

Tangelablue · 27/11/2024 07:50

They decided to drop the ball on parenting and have to pay for that.
I would have lost it if someone demanded I pay for their children's food.

Keroppi · 27/11/2024 07:57

YANBU they clearly would've heard and noticed what was going on but decided to ignore it

YABU for not eating takoyaki its so good

mamajong · 27/11/2024 08:00

Yanbu, should have been supervising their kids

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 27/11/2024 08:04

@Damnloginpopup Do octopi have balls? but is it octopuses, or octopi, or even octopusses??? 😂😂😂 actually, where are their balls?????

boogiewoogie24 · 27/11/2024 08:13

Just googled sushi train. Sounds incredibly unhygienic! Your food passes by loads of other people who could have coughed or sneezed or touched it. Eww.

It’s covered.

Catza · 27/11/2024 08:29

I don't know what goes on in your friends' heads to suggest you pay for something you neither ate, nor offered to the other table to eat. They must have a seriously strange view of the world or they are, simply, people pleasers who would have paid for their and the next table's meals just to avoid "conflict".

Haggia · 27/11/2024 08:42

Cwazycupcake · 27/11/2024 07:43

I can’t quite remember what it was exactly. Some sort of octopus in the shape of a ball.🤮 You know the weird expensive plates.

Well that’s disappointing

rainbowstardrops · 27/11/2024 08:45

If you didn't eat the octopus balls then it's tough shit that they weren't supervising their children! I think your idea was genius!

Cattery · 27/11/2024 09:07

NineDaysQueen · 27/11/2024 07:40

Well, this post has foxed me.
A sushi train? Wtf is that? Does it travel, or in a siding?
Your kids were shouting for their food rather than asking politely?
I have no idea what you are talking about

I think I have an idea and it all sounds horrific

TwinklyAmberOrca · 27/11/2024 09:12

They chose not to supervise their kids, so the bill is entirely theirs!

Is this post for real?!?! I cannot believe some parents would be so irresponsible and just let their kids take what they like with no supervision then try and blame someone else!

Ermengarde · 27/11/2024 09:15

I used to love going to Yo Sushi when the kids were younger but bloody hell does the cost add up fast. The thought of leaving 4 children to sit at a table on their own by the conveyor belt is crazy!!

Honestandkind · 27/11/2024 09:16

CRbear · 27/11/2024 07:41

whats with the childish humour?

no one laughs at “chicken balls” from the Chinese? And she would get millions of “what’s takoyaki?” if she had said that…

I've literally never heard of chicken balls 🤣

ClicketyClickPlusOne · 27/11/2024 09:18

Damnloginpopup · 27/11/2024 07:41

Actually, I have now googled about octopi testicles. Quite fascinating.

Octopussy less so.

😂

Apolloneuro · 27/11/2024 09:21

I think what you did was really funny.

GermanBite · 27/11/2024 09:23

How did the parents figure out that their kids had taken things you wanted?

Isatis · 27/11/2024 09:23

Given that it was all explained to those in doubt by @ThanksItHasPockets over an hour before you posted, I would hope you have more than an idea.

Horrific? Really?! In what way?

ChristmasCrimble · 27/11/2024 09:27

My kids were loudly calling out what they wanted

Why were you allowing your children to shout in the first place? What the neighbouring table were doing was their business but I wouldn’t have allowed my children to be shouting out what they wanted.

Singinghollybob · 27/11/2024 09:27

You are definitely not being unreasonable. Why would your friends think you should've paid for some?!

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 27/11/2024 09:33

Jesus I took mine to Yo Sushi once, I monitored their choices like a hawk. (And then they wanted Greggs after) Horrible parents I reckon were just trying to get out of allowing their offspring free choice.

Hoppinggreen · 27/11/2024 09:38

Genius move OP

Doitrightnow · 27/11/2024 09:45

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 27/11/2024 08:04

Edited

Octopus is from Greek and can be pluralised octopodes (if you want to be true to the Greek) or octopuses (normal English plural).

It's never octopi because that's a Latin plural form.

OP, you are not being unreasonable, you didn't force the obnoxious children to take anything off the conveyor.
