Sushi restaurant drama

After reading another similar post I had to get opinions on if I was unreasonable.

I was at a sushi train a few weeks ago with DH and kids. It was close to closing time so there wasn’t a huge selection left. At the booth next to us were four kids, their parents ( four adults) were at the booth opposite the kids. My kids were loudly calling out what they wanted, and as the food went past the table of kids before us they took everything my kids wanted. Despite telling my kids to stop calling out what they wanted, it continued. The kids at the next table had quite a bit of half eaten sushi piled up, the parents hadn’t noticed. I know I should have told the parents their kids were being silly, but due to being a little hangry I said I wanted octopus balls, it was the most expensive plate colour and there were a few, and this is when the parents realised what was happening. They were not pleased, one of the men picked up the plates and put them on our table and said we were paying for it. I grabbed the couple of plates we had actually eaten from and went to the checkout and explained what happened. I only paid what I should have.
A couple of friends said I should have paid for at least some of it.
Was I in the wrong?

@MarkWithaC Agree so much about the intelligence of 🐙 octopuses- Pigs too are incredibly bright.
A local butcher says the most humane meat ( in his experience) is shot wild deer 🦌- but these are expensive .

People eating octopus alive ( where they are fighting for life ) is grotesque.

IF animals are eaten, their lives and deaths should be as humane as possible. ( Anyone who has had rescued battery hens knows how happy these birds are and they still lay wonky eggs for you.💕

I find myself eating meat less and less. It was for sustainability and cost reasons, but increasingly I feel ethically troubled by it. Yes, pigs are so clever. And delightful.

I’ve been to lots of sushi places but I can’t see what’s coming down the conveyor belt until it’s practically on top of me. I can see the plates and the plastic dome covers but not the contents.

But the OP and their DCs could? What you can normally see when you go to sushi places isn't really relevant.

44PumpLane · 27/11/2024 16:40

Honestly OP it's not your job to monitor their kids ......they didn't give a shit when their kids were preventing your kids eating what they wanted, they only cared when it got a bit expensive.

Idiots, and honestly if your mate would have paid then they're and idiot too!

Me too. I have found over the years I’ve taken things off the list that I’ll eat. I won’t ever eat octopus, veal or lamb. I have dilemmas over pigs and would never eat goat. I think it’s likely I’ll take meat out the equation once my kids have left home. Not as a die hard vegetarian but I’ll limit it to maybe eating out sometimes, maybe.

Annabella92 · 27/11/2024 16:44

I'd love to see how this man approached you with the expectation that you somehow needed to pay for this? It's wild

“My kids were bullying your kids by pulling stuff they didn’t want to eat—simply for the joy of depriving your kids. I was sitting at a separate table and not supervising my kids. I’m not paying; you can pay”

I largely eat fish and chicken now, and those rarely.
I sometimes housesit for friends who keep chickens though (for eggs only) and do feel a bit weird about continuing to eat the meat after I've been feeding/talking to a little flock of happy, live ones.

I can relate. Mainly chicken and fish too.

On topic, OP most certainly shouldn’t need be paying in these circumstances.

Why not goat?

Affectionate, like having a dog apparently.

napody · 27/11/2024 17:01

YANBU OP- brilliant way to handle it!
Did the parents actually tell the kids off for their bratty behaviour, or did the kids see that Dad took it all out on you instead?

Good luck in the future... sushi brat parents!

JohnTheRevelator · 27/11/2024 17:05

Sorry, you lost me at 'octopus balls'. Do they have balls? And do people actually eat them?! 🤢

birdiesings · 27/11/2024 17:10

YABU for wanting to eat an octopus at all.

I just assumed it’s octopus flesh in that shape? Like sweet and sour chicken balls or chicken nuggets

Disgraceful, isn’t it?

In all honesty if it was near closing and the selection was running down tgey orobably just put it down as unsold. Sushi places must have quite a bit of food that has to be disposed of unsold as they can only keep it out a certain amount of time.

Put differently, if no one had paid the Octopus’ balls the slightest amount of attention they would most likely still have been unsold given it was nearing COB. ( having fun with an apostrophe here…)

KenAdams · 27/11/2024 17:29

I did not realise how closed people were to other cultures and their cuisine until this thread. Now I see where the chicken nuggets and chips attitude comes from.

Wait ‘til you find out that chickens don’t have nuggets.

I haven't seen anybody closed to other cultures and their cuisine. Just people not happy about eating such an intelligent animal as an octopus. I don't thik that makes you closed to other cultures.

Maybe they needn’t being confused about the conveyor belt system.

Andoutcomethewolves · 27/11/2024 19:13

The fact the dad came over and dumped them on YOUR table specifically would strongly suggest he knew exactly what the kids were doing and just didn't give a shit until it got too expensive. Dick.

Obviously you shouldn't have paid for them OP.

PonyPatter44 · 27/11/2024 19:21

You lot will go nuts when you find out about matzoh balls. And yes, you can eat the rest of the matzoh so it doesn't go to waste 🤣🤣🤣

But they were taking food before it got to OP and her family. Do you not understand how such restaurants work?

Yes, I did understand that.
Yes I do know how these restaurants work.
I don’t think you are understanding my reply.
