Sushi restaurant drama

After reading another similar post I had to get opinions on if I was unreasonable.

I was at a sushi train a few weeks ago with DH and kids. It was close to closing time so there wasn’t a huge selection left. At the booth next to us were four kids, their parents ( four adults) were at the booth opposite the kids. My kids were loudly calling out what they wanted, and as the food went past the table of kids before us they took everything my kids wanted. Despite telling my kids to stop calling out what they wanted, it continued. The kids at the next table had quite a bit of half eaten sushi piled up, the parents hadn’t noticed. I know I should have told the parents their kids were being silly, but due to being a little hangry I said I wanted octopus balls, it was the most expensive plate colour and there were a few, and this is when the parents realised what was happening. They were not pleased, one of the men picked up the plates and put them on our table and said we were paying for it. I grabbed the couple of plates we had actually eaten from and went to the checkout and explained what happened. I only paid what I should have.
A couple of friends said I should have paid for at least some of it.
Was I in the wrong?

The food is not exposed. You’ve clearly never eaten in one so what makes you think you can criticise people who have?

Why the aggression? My point was, why would you persist in sitting in that atmosphere with two tables of kids shouting then try to trump the other kids by “tricking” them into choosing the most expensive food item. What I was getting at when I said “horrific” was the childishness of the parents. Is that really how adults spend their time?

I'd never heard of a sushi train. I had to Google it.
The concept sounds total madness to me and that is crazy behaviour from the other customers and their children. Couldn't you have complained to staff about what was happening before you took the matter into your hands?
Not impressed by the thought of Octopus balls being used in this manner in this fiasco: I feel quite angry about the farming and consumption of these super intelligent creatures and I certainly wouldn't be eating them.

Edited

Exactly my thoughts.
Anyone is BU for eating Octopus in any case, but them being farmed to eat and then not even being eaten is even more infuriating.

I wish I hadn't stumbled into this thread 🤮

What’s that supposed to mean?

pictoosh · 27/11/2024 12:11

@Cattery I agree with @goldenlegend - you were being snooty about something you obviously have no experience of. Stop trying to deflect back on to the OP.

ImADeadGirlWalking · 27/11/2024 12:12

Well done you!

The dad sounds like an arrogant dickhead and his kids weren't being very nice either, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!

No you’re right. I don’t have experience of sitting in public with kids shouting across tables. If that makes me snooty 🤷‍♀️

ThanksMrNarwhal · 27/11/2024 12:20

Thanks OP for the laugh, ywdnbu! They should have been paying attention and also shame on them for the waste and their children's selfish behaviour

ItGhoul · 27/11/2024 12:20

I don't know why people are apparently incapable of understanding your perfectly clear post.

OP, you were not being even remotely unreasonable. The other kids were deliberately taking food they didn't want just so that your kids couldn't have it, and you were absolutely right to get revenge on their parents by tricking them into taking the most expensive stuff. The parents of the other kids should have been keeping an eye on their kids.

PonyPatter44 · 27/11/2024 12:21

I occasionally took DD to "that" sushi chain-with-the-train when she was younger. It always got hideously expensive, but she loved it. I think the OP pulled a master stroke here, so i take my hat off to her.

Thousands are diagnosed annually in Japan with parasites from raw fish.
Fish carry parasites- much safer cooked.

I do love a good Google. I can find ‘over 1000’ cases a year in Japan, which I accept is vague, but in a country of 123m people it doesn’t sound too scary. Particularly given the very high level of fish consumption and the greater likelihood that people are eating raw fish they’ve prepared themselves.

In other countries, where most raw fish is eaten in restaurants and fish will be ‘sushi-grade’ so pre-frozen to treat parasites, case numbers are tiny.

LuckySantangelo35 · 27/11/2024 12:23

lol as if anyone is gonna pay for other people’s children’s half eaten food! Never. Gonna. Happen.

EmotionalSupportPotato · 27/11/2024 12:23

Nah this is on the parents

But the parents didnt do anything until right at the end. They werent behaving childish

I mean to be fair...we all do it; we all think we know about things that we don't and even occasionally spout off as if we know what we're talking about.

When it becomes an issue is when we double down with contempt rather than conceding that we may have misunderstood a concept we have no actual experience of.
And then continue to do so.

I have loads of experience of being in public places with kids shouting across tables. Never been to Pizza Express or a birthday party? Never attended an event with food? We already know you've never been for sushi but I am sure you know all about public places and children. Take your nose out of the air and be real.

I've literally never heard of chicken balls 🤣

Chicken balls:

mewkins · 27/11/2024 12:36

They had some (octopus) balls putting it on your table and demanding you pay. They should have been looking after their children.

ManchesterLu · 27/11/2024 12:42

ElfAndSafetyBored · 27/11/2024 07:43

No, it’s not your responsibility to monitor their children behaviour.

I like to think I would have said something to the parents earlyier but pretty sure I wouldn’t have.

But they were taking food before it got to OP and her family. Do you not understand how such restaurants work?

Hyperbowl · 27/11/2024 12:48

YANBU. Careless, irresponsible parents raise entitled grabby children and that work of brilliance from yourself was karma at its finest. Please tell me he was made to pay for the food!

He almost certainly wasn’t and the only loser here will have been the restaurant, sadly.

whynotwhatknot · 27/11/2024 13:02

i just order off the menu now at yo sushi i understan it an fun for kids but you dont leave tem unsuperised like that twat did then blame you

Lindy2 · 27/11/2024 13:04

No you absolutely don't pay for someone else's food.

They took the plates it's their bill.

Perhaps next time he'll keep an eye on what his children are doing.

This thread has made me laugh. I am picturing;

OP shouting out octopus balls.
In my imagination I see an octopus with balls.
And yes I also inwardly laugh at chicken balls and also prawn balls.

Yes I am very childish (in secret) 😂

I am actually going out for sushi tonight. I will be looking out for octopus balls....🐙

Rachie1973 · 27/11/2024 13:07

Cwazycupcake · 27/11/2024 10:24

Thanks all. My friend felt I should pay as I had goaded the kids into grabbing four expensive plates of food they wouldn’t eat.

I do promise to be more adventurous next time I get sushi.

I think it’s genius!

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 27/11/2024 13:11

The dad sounds like an arrogant a*hole. The kids played a game of Fk About & Find Out and it ended up costing their parents 🤗
Little turds shouldn't have been so grabby. 1-0 to you OP 🤭

CheesecakeTheCapybara · 27/11/2024 13:12

NineDaysQueen · 27/11/2024 07:42

Do they have balls in each arm in the same way they have a brain in each?

Maybe they have brains in the balls in the arms. Like some human blokes except for the arm thing!

TofuTart · 27/11/2024 13:19

NineDaysQueen · 27/11/2024 07:40

Well, this post has foxed me.
A sushi train? Wtf is that? Does it travel, or in a siding?
Your kids were shouting for their food rather than asking politely?
I have no idea what you are talking about

Glad it's not just me 😂
Trying to envision the scenario but hard when you've not a bloody clue what they're on about 😁
