Sushi restaurant drama

After reading another similar post I had to get opinions on if I was unreasonable.

I was at a sushi train a few weeks ago with DH and kids. It was close to closing time so there wasn’t a huge selection left. At the booth next to us were four kids, their parents ( four adults) were at the booth opposite the kids. My kids were loudly calling out what they wanted, and as the food went past the table of kids before us they took everything my kids wanted. Despite telling my kids to stop calling out what they wanted, it continued. The kids at the next table had quite a bit of half eaten sushi piled up, the parents hadn’t noticed. I know I should have told the parents their kids were being silly, but due to being a little hangry I said I wanted octopus balls, it was the most expensive plate colour and there were a few, and this is when the parents realised what was happening. They were not pleased, one of the men picked up the plates and put them on our table and said we were paying for it. I grabbed the couple of plates we had actually eaten from and went to the checkout and explained what happened. I only paid what I should have.
A couple of friends said I should have paid for at least some of it.
Was I in the wrong?

OP was at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant like Yo Sushi. You take your chosen plates from the belt and pay for what you have eaten. They are colour coded to correspond to the prices.

The obnoxious children at the next table were closer to the entry point of the food. They listened to OP’s children saying what they wanted and deliberately took it off the belt before it reached OP and family. Irritated by this, OP loudly said that she wanted one of the most expensive dishes on the menu. The obnoxious children duly took it and their parents only noticed once their children’s behaviour got expensive.

YANBU and the other adults should have supervised their children.

Ah ok, thanks for this - makes a (bit!) more sense 😁

mindutopia · 27/11/2024 13:23

My guess is this was one of those families you see in the Daily Fail getting caught out doing a dine and dash.

EdgyDreamer · 27/11/2024 13:29

Also I doubt the parents didn't realise until then, they simply didn't care until the kids picked the most expensive items just to waste them.

This.

I don't see why you needed to pay anything at all or why anyone would suggests that you did- you didn't take the food their kids did - they should have watched them better.

LAMPS1 · 27/11/2024 13:36

No you shouldn’t have paid for it IMO.

The parent didn’t notice when his children were depriving your children of what they wanted by grabbing it all first.
But suddenly noticed when his children grabbed expensive items.
His problem, he should have been supervising more closely instead of trying to offload the responsibility to you.

Packetofcrispsplease · 27/11/2024 13:38

These other kids were grabby brats and their parents ought to have supervised them .
I like Japanese food a lot but I don’t like 🐙 takoyaki 😖 for some reason .

YellowAsteroid · 27/11/2024 13:39

Good Lord, that other family were appallingly rude, and anyone who thinks you should have paid, needs their head read.

MarkWithaC · 27/11/2024 13:39

Absolutely up to the other parents to supervise their kids. What unpleasant brats they’re turning out.
Your friends who think you should have paid: I have a bridge they might be interested in.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/11/2024 13:42

You did exactly the right thing OP, well done!

Those parents should have supervised their children. And when they realised they should have profusely apologised to you/ told their children off, not dumped the plates their children had half eaten on you.

Entitled brats - the parents and the children!

roses2 · 27/11/2024 13:46

WTF, their kids grabbed food off the conveyor belt, ate a bit then the dad came over, dumped the plates on your table and told you to pay??

Ellie1015 · 27/11/2024 13:49

They obviously did have an idea what was going on but didnt bother to intervene until it became expensive.

I think you handled it perfectly.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 27/11/2024 13:57

Coincidence?😂

(Reproduction of the paper nautilus is mindblowing, too.)

Hahahaha xx Never mess with a hangry woman xx

Totally their responsibility to keep an eye on their kids.

I'd never heard of a sushi train. I had to Google it.
The concept sounds total madness to me and that is crazy behaviour from the other customers and their children. Couldn't you have complained to staff about what was happening before you took the matter into your hands?
Not impressed by the thought of Octopus balls being used in this manner in this fiasco: I feel quite angry about the farming and consumption of these super intelligent creatures and I certainly wouldn't be eating them.

Edited

my first knowledge of a sushi train was on Miranda tv show

Well, this post has foxed me.
A sushi train? Wtf is that? Does it travel, or in a siding?
Your kids were shouting for their food rather than asking politely?
I have no idea what you are talking about

Ha ha!

I thought I was the only person completely foxed by this scenario. I've never been to a sushi restaurant and the whole incident sounds surreal...

I must try to get out more...😅

Maybe they have brains in the balls in the arms. Like some human blokes except for the arm thing!

Excellent response, OP.

As for the rest of the thread, I am entertained by how it has developed into the usual wonderful Mumsnet chaos, with musings about octopuses, anatomy and behaviours, some sexual bits, vague squabbling about children's behaviour and parenting, the usual bit of incomprehension and the ethical and health considerations of sushi.😀

I'm starting gently by just going to the foot of our stairs

RubyMentor · 27/11/2024 14:33

I applaud your ingenious action.

The parent was definitely a CF to suggest you should pay for the dishes his little darlings had taken.

Cattyisbatty · 27/11/2024 14:34

Did they want you to pay for all the trays their kids had ' stolen' from your kids choices - of course you shouldn't have to pay. That's insane. Parents had money to burn to let their kids pick what they want.
I have only been to Yo Sushi once, as my then young teen was desperate to go - never again as it was extortionate even 10 years ago.

GoldenLegend · 27/11/2024 14:37

Cattery · 27/11/2024 12:01

Why the aggression? My point was, why would you persist in sitting in that atmosphere with two tables of kids shouting then try to trump the other kids by “tricking” them into choosing the most expensive food item. What I was getting at when I said “horrific” was the childishness of the parents. Is that really how adults spend their time?

I asked you a perfectly reasonable question: you haven't eaten in one of the restaurants so why criticise people who do?

You haven't answered that.

HuckleberryBlackcurrant · 27/11/2024 14:40

I think you gave them just what they deserved. They should have been paying closer attention to their brats.

And I'm not sure why some many people on here lack reading comprehension (maybe because they're too busy snickering because someone said the word 'balls' tee hee) but I thought your post made perfect sense.

GoldenLegend · 27/11/2024 14:40

Rachie1973 · 27/11/2024 13:07

I think it’s genius!

I also think it's a genius way to ensure those particular parents supervise their kids in future.

Additionally, I feel a visit to Yo! Sushi coming on.

I admit, I'd never heard it described as a train. I thought it was a carousel. For the people who've never tried it, sushi restaurants like this are good fun, but AHEM keep an eye on how much you're spending because it's easy to get carried away!

Annabella92 · 27/11/2024 14:44

Cwazycupcake · 27/11/2024 10:24

Thanks all. My friend felt I should pay as I had goaded the kids into grabbing four expensive plates of food they wouldn’t eat.

I do promise to be more adventurous next time I get sushi.

Your friend is mental. You didn't goad those little toerags

Onlycoffee · 27/11/2024 14:53

Cwazycupcake · 27/11/2024 10:38

They looked over at the kids table as I possibly a little too loudly said I wanted octopus balls and saw the kids taking it. Then saw all the plates on the table. He said I’m not paying that and dumped it all on our table.

There's no way I would want to eat food that has been handled by their kids, left sitting on their kids table then handled again the parents.

YANBU, they should have been supervising their kids.
