Sushi restaurant drama

After reading another similar post I had to get opinions on if I was unreasonable.

I was at a sushi train a few weeks ago with DH and kids. It was close to closing time so there wasn’t a huge selection left. At the booth next to us were four kids, their parents ( four adults) were at the booth opposite the kids. My kids were loudly calling out what they wanted, and as the food went past the table of kids before us they took everything my kids wanted. Despite telling my kids to stop calling out what they wanted, it continued. The kids at the next table had quite a bit of half eaten sushi piled up, the parents hadn’t noticed. I know I should have told the parents their kids were being silly, but due to being a little hangry I said I wanted octopus balls, it was the most expensive plate colour and there were a few, and this is when the parents realised what was happening. They were not pleased, one of the men picked up the plates and put them on our table and said we were paying for it. I grabbed the couple of plates we had actually eaten from and went to the checkout and explained what happened. I only paid what I should have.
A couple of friends said I should have paid for at least some of it.
Was I in the wrong?

Haha, love it. Hope they enjoyed their octopus balls 😂

Atishooo · 27/11/2024 11:14

So you played them at their own game and they lost. Of course you shouldn’t have paid.

I always heard their testicles are delicious !

I always thought they had tentacles but now realise I must have been saying it wrong.

OP was at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant like Yo Sushi. You take your chosen plates from the belt and pay for what you have eaten. They are colour coded to correspond to the prices.

The obnoxious children at the next table were closer to the entry point of the food. They listened to OP’s children saying what they wanted and deliberately took it off the belt before it reached OP and family. Irritated by this, OP loudly said that she wanted one of the most expensive dishes on the menu. The obnoxious children duly took it and their parents only noticed once their children’s behaviour got expensive.

YANBU and the other adults should have supervised their children.

Excellent precis! You should get a job at Mumsnet Towers as official narrator.

Given that it was all explained to those in doubt by @ThanksItHasPockets over an hour before you posted, I would hope you have more than an idea.

Calm yourself. Why would anyone choose to sit in one of those places with food exposed and kids shouting trying to outdo each other 🤷‍♀️

BumpyaDaisyevna · 27/11/2024 11:21

The parents must be loaded!

My poor kids are not allowed to even move their hand an inch in the direction of of a plate on the train until my nod!

wafflesmochi · 27/11/2024 11:27

That man was a prick with awful kids. Of course you shouldn't have paid.

The plates on the belt have plastic domes over the tops.

The food is not exposed. You’ve clearly never eaten in one so what makes you think you can criticise people who have?

Dollybantree · 27/11/2024 11:28

Haha, brilliant OP - I like your how your mind works 👿

Im also amused at the fact your children carried on calling out what they wanted despite seeing what the bratty table were doing - are they only small or were they enjoying the carnage?

Dollybantree · 27/11/2024 11:31

Cwazycupcake · 27/11/2024 10:38

They looked over at the kids table as I possibly a little too loudly said I wanted octopus balls and saw the kids taking it. Then saw all the plates on the table. He said I’m not paying that and dumped it all on our table.

No wonder he has entitled, obnoxious children. I've experienced this kind of behaviour from kids and the parents always turn out to be massive bellends too.

The man on the other table was 100% the unreasonable one. What kind of idiot takes their children to a self-service place and doesn’t pay attention what they are taking??

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/11/2024 11:39

Well, this thread has been educational. I've never eaten in a sushi place and always wondered how the conveyor belt thing worked and how the charging is done. Now I know. If I ever go myself I will make sure to sit a long way from any unsupervised brats children.

user1471523071 · 27/11/2024 11:39

Loving this thread. My kids are very late teens, but we have discussions about what is being taken off the conveyor belt, what the prices are, and need to see them going around first to work out if it's worth it for the price before items are chosen. I am agog that parents would allow their children free rein in taking items. Is this where you realise someone has won the lottery but didn't go public? You were not unreasonable op and I wish I had your 'not octopus' balls.

OMG, what a silly man (don't want to get deleted!)

I hope the restaurant made them pay for everything.

You could possibly have tried to put a stop to the bad behaviour earlier if only for your children's sake. I would have complained to the staff, if not the parents.

cestlavielife · 27/11/2024 11:42

They played a game you played them back. Haha well done! Not your plates to pay!

Viviennemary · 27/11/2024 11:50

If their kids took it off the conveyor belt then they pay for it. End of. Can't see anything to dispute

Maraa · 27/11/2024 11:51

Nope, not unreasonable. Those parents were. On a side note, it’s been soooo long since I had sushi and I’m so jealous

DanielaDressen · 27/11/2024 11:52

Did the kids eat the octopus balls and other food they took? Daft parents for not supervising and nasty of them to dump the plates on you. Not your issue at all. How did the parents clock on about your slight involvement?

Scottishskifun · 27/11/2024 11:52

Nope not your children not your responsibility should have been stopping his kids before you did it in return. You didn't puppet string their arms into taking it off the belt onto their table!

And the fact that he's obnoxious enough to attempt to dump it on OP at the end means she was right not to address it directly earlier on because he'd have just been argumentative and dug in.

You can't reason with some people.

No...she says their kids' table had quite a lot of half eaten sushi piling up. They were just taking what her kids' wanted to eat and wasting it for fun. Their parents didn't notice their obnoxious game.
Shame.

Is it the done thing to shout out what you want to the chef ?
It sounds chaotic

That's so not the way it works!
