gives you the ick?

It seems very popular on Mumsnet. Do you stay in the ones you slept in or shower and put on fresh ones?

Eurgh never!
I consider Christmas an exciting day and I want to get up and put nice clothes on, do my hair and makeup etc. I’d feel grubby in pjs!

Me too!

hair and makeup done and a nice outfit

That's literally what clothing does though. It determines how you act and also sends a message.

It's why schools insist on uniforms, why in the corporate world people dress smartly, why lawyers wear a wig and gown, why we have black tie events, hats at weddings etc etc etc.

Wear what you like in your own home but you can't deny that clothing is a signifier.

Wearing pyjamas doesn’t mean that I will be lazy and slob around for the day - I wouldn’t do that in any type of clothing.

Christmas Day is one of my favourite days of the year. Why would I feel grubby in a new pair of silk pyjamas?

I would! Not saying you would 😆
I like getting dressed and doing hair and makeup so then putting pjs on would feel odd:.. to me!

Unbearable. The idea of sitting around drinking in my pyjamas makes me feel depressed, and the idea of watching other people's family members do it is even worse. Get up, get dressed, have drinks and lunch, go for a walk, come home, put something comfortable on to sit on the sofa eating and drinking more.

Nothing depressing about our Christmas Day - we’ll have a cold buffet and some champagne but we’re not sitting on the sofa people. We’ll get changed from our pyjamas later in the day to go skiing whereas spending the evening on the sofa would depress me.

I love the way people think it's awful to wear Pjs all day but find nothing objectionable about people starting to drink at 9am on Christmas day...

But they're two completely unrelated things, surely? I mean, it's like not liking Christmas jumpers but having no issue with people laying artificial lawns. There's no relationship between the two.

Why is it seen by some as a negative for wanting to wear pyjamas on Christmas Day but not a negative for drinking in the morning on Christmas Day?

Needmorelego · 25/11/2024 15:47

@LuckySantangelo35 I am assuming when people say "drink" they are meaning alcohol.
Alcohol at 9am is not exactly a good thing is it?

Now that would open a can of worms that. Who is a morning drinker Grin

I never hang around all day in pyjamas. I rarely even breakfast in them.

This is an idea I've only heard of on MN.

I'm your polar opposite, I only put on outdoor if I'm going out. (I work a weird job that gives me lots of free time)

Why not? Anything is a good thing as part of a healthy adult balanced lifestyle

Inthefreakmidwinter · 25/11/2024 15:59

I think my point is Christmas Day is a day we all do things differently, like dressing up to be indoors, or wearing PJs all day, or starting drinking at 9am, it's not the norm but lots of people on here have said they can't imagine anyone wanting to be in their PJs all day, but surely the whole point is we do these things because it is a special day.

PureBoggin · 25/11/2024 16:00

Never had a PJ Christmas before but after a hellishly busy few months we have decided that we are going to have one this year. Can't bloody wait.

Cherrysoup · 25/11/2024 16:01

Horrible idea. I don’t go downstairs until I’m fully dressed unless letting out dogs quickly and feeding them.

Needmorelego · 25/11/2024 16:03

@Twinkletoes127 yeah ok....if you say so.

Enjoy! We started it when DT’s and their cousins were young and made it a competition - years later the competition has become more competitive and very much looked forward to !

Comedycook · 25/11/2024 16:04

I think a lot of this depends on what your normal, everyday life is like.

If you're always busy, out and about, hectic social life then I can see the appeal of having Christmas at home in your pjs.

For me though, I'm a sahm, I don't have a particularly busy life or a crazy social calendar. I am usually dressed casually. So I like Christmas to be different, dressed up, people around etc.

Dosat · 25/11/2024 16:06

I wake up wash and put on fresh pj shorts, T-shirt and a Christmas jumper

This is a really sensible post tbh. We're always running around, especially in December. We like it, don't get me wrong, but time away from it just to put our feet up and chill and be comfy is lovely.

I do quite like dressing up on New Year's Day. We have a formal sort of meal and wear nice stuff - PJs would still be nice then too, but I think because we've had a good chance to lounge in fancy comfy PJs by then it feels a bit more like a treat. Saw a gorgeous skirt from New Look on the S&B threads - not usually my style...but sparkly! 😍

Can't choose between this and the silver!

well I don’t see it as a necessarily bad thing once a year at Christmas! What’s wrong with it?! Buck’s Fizz at breakfast- yes, please! 🥂

im not happy to wear pyjamas all day on Christmas Day, just wouldn’t feel right to me but more than happy to have a glass of Buck’s Fizz with my breakfast on Christmas Day 🤷‍♀️ everyone’s different ! 😀

Boomer55 · 25/11/2024 16:50

No, I wouldn’t want to spend the day feeling slobby. But each to their own. 👍
