gives you the ick?

It seems very popular on Mumsnet. Do you stay in the ones you slept in or shower and put on fresh ones?

No PJs all day. Ever. Never mind Christmas!

I got to about 2 pm once when I had a bad cold and felt utterly depressed and skanky staying in bed clothes.

We have animals which require us to be up and outdoors early.

I also like to be able to open the front door to neighbours, or the postman, or in an emergency, or just to be able to nip out at a moment’s notice.

And if I am cooking at Christmas, especially manhandling trays of roast potatoes in goose grease, and steaming puddings, I want to be wearing proper clothes and shoes and nothing remotely flammable or anything that exposes arms or won’t protect me from dropped knives, hot fat, or boiling water.

DocileWimps · 23/11/2024 17:34

I am surprised how many people on here are happy to wear night wear all day on Christmas Day. I literally do not know anyone in real life who would do this on any day of the year.

If all of you who say you will wear your pyjamas on Christmas Day are telling the truth and this isn't a massive piss-take, I assume you are a very different kind of people from the ones I know and call friends and family.

Since I have been following this thread I have noticed a primary school I pass on the way to work has a few mothers in dressing gowns and pyjamas dropping children off at the school. As most of the mothers have been wearing coats over the last few days it is not possible to know whether it's a few of them or most, but it does seem to be a normal thing for them.

My daughter went to a different school where I can honestly say I never saw a parent wearing bed clothes.

Is it possible that the wearing of pyjamas all day is something that only happens in certain areas?

That might explain why there is such a gulf between those of us that can't get our heads round why anyone would think this this is a "fun", "enjoyable" and "relaxing" way to spend Christmas and those of you for whom it is perfectly normal behaviour and think getting dressed unless you have to is unnecessary.

@Wexone
I have done a bit of research over the years and the trend toward wearing PJs and stretch leisurewear instead of structured clothing tracks strongly with the increasing epidemic of obesity. People are uncomfortable in non-stretch or tailored clothing for obvious reasons.

Just look at old photos taken in public places.

I think there must be some correlation.

I’ve never seen people in public in their PJs, where in the UK is this common? Height of slobbiness imo.

The pyjamas I’ll be wearing on Christmas Day (because it is fun!) will not be worn in bed. I will be getting dressed in them - they are my outfit for the day. I have never worn them out of the house. Some of your comments appear very snobbish - are you better than the families who send their children to the other school?

I have ordered my Christmas Day pyjamas - they will be ready to collect when I get home.

i think some posters have forgotten how to have fun!

StepawayfromtheLindors · 23/11/2024 17:48

Erm, it all depends on your idea of “fun”. This isn’t my idea of fun.

gamerchick · 23/11/2024 17:49

So the threads now mulling over those of us who wear new PJ's on Christmas day must be connected to 'council estates' (at least have the cujoins to say it) and doing the school run in clothes we slept in and dressing gowns?

And we're fat to boot?

I'm looking at the thread in a different way because those of us who like a pj Christmas day don't sleep in pyjamas, I've also seen that people don't do a pj day on Christmas day because that's a boxing day thing.

Why is it so difficult to grasp that some of us aren't having people over and nor are we visiting other people. We're not cooking Christmas dinner either. It's just a little family unit spending time together playing walking dead monopoly and having a laugh. Those days are precious and it really doesn't need people to dress up for.

Absolutely no idea at the moment. I’ll give it some headspace the day before or so. But it definitely won’t be PJs or “lounge wear” [boak]

Interesting.

I deliberately gave no opinion on whether the families and children who go to the other school are "worse" or "better" than the ones who go to my daughter's school.

I made a simple observation that some of the mothers wear bed clothes to take their children to the other school. It was you that inferred that the families and children at my daughter's school might be "better" in my opinion. Obviously, that's your opinion.

You have given yourself away. I suppose you think you're better in your "fun" Christmas pyjamas than the people who wear pyjamas in bed...

I do wear pyjamas to bed - just not ones I’ve spent CAD$300 on!

I don't mind how much you paid for them. They are still pyjamas.

I suppose you think you're "better" than people who wear £10 Lidl pyjamas do you?

Vitriolinsanity · 23/11/2024 18:27

No.

The thought of being in pyjamas all day is one that has never crossed my mind.

Then again, whatever floats your boat.

Vitriolinsanity · 23/11/2024 18:30

I suppose if an asteroid hit my head and I spent £171 (yes, I did the exchange rate 😆) maybe I would.

Do you look like Margot from the Good Life?

I doubt it. I don't remember much about "The Good Life", but I remember Margot being well turned out, even when she was gardening!

No pyjamas for her, except when she was in bed...

Radiatorvalves · 23/11/2024 18:38

No!

Vitriolinsanity · 23/11/2024 18:40

@DocileWimps Margot was a phenomenon and would have worn pyjamas albeit silk and with a matching turban for "at home".

I bought a "winged" silk top in the early 00's and am still called Margot by my friends.

Haven’t heard of her but googled it - Margo Leadbetter: Elegant, Timeless Fashion Icon

Quite like that but she seemed very British/Home Counties- I’m not British and don’t live in the UK.

I'm a professional, privately educated, doctorate, live in a lovely village. You don't sound like the type of person I'd be friends with either.

Agreed. I bet half her pals are doing it too and she doesn’t realise/they don’t tell her because they know how judgy she is. But to @DocileWimps , wearing jammies on the school run is quite a different thing to wearing them all day at home, isn’t it?

Obviously not, if you wear pyjamas all day. My professional well-educated friends who live in our lovely village save their pyjamas for bedtime.
