gives you the ick?

It seems very popular on Mumsnet. Do you stay in the ones you slept in or shower and put on fresh ones?

Up, shower, clean PJs. DD and I will have spent the 2 weeks before Christmas in pantomime ( her on stage and me backstage) and Christmas day is our total chill out day!!!!

I do get that but...is that what most people imagine as a wonderful Christmas?

It's a special day. Arguably the biggest festive day in the British year.
I mean if you think pyjamas are living your best life who are we to say. But equally if you can't dress up then, when can you.

SP2024 · 22/11/2024 22:19

Absolutely not. I never spend all day in PJs even if ill. Surefire way to feel like crap

But surely that's the point, for some people the epitome of the most festive day of the year will be to feel relaxed and able to wear what they feel comfortable in all day, i.e. PJS (assuming that most people don't do this every day.) On the other hand some people will want to get dressed up to the nines to stay indoors, which again isn't what most people would do.

Also, who bloody cares. In the words of my 15 year old 'you do you (musmnet) :)

Needmorelego · 22/11/2024 22:23

@AndThereSheGoes I don't like "dressing up" though.
I like t-shirts, hoodies, leggings, trackies and....... yes PYJAMAS !
That's what I like..... that's what I wanna wear.
(I have worn smarter clothes when required - like when I did jury service. Just don't particularly want to wear that at home 😂)

DisabledDemon · 22/11/2024 22:58

I don't even possess a pair of PJs so it would have to be comfy clothes. I can't wear PJs in bed as they get twisted around me and I wake up feeling as if I'm being strangled.

I don't want to dress up. I want to be comfortable.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 22/11/2024 23:10

I don't understand why some people think that nice clothes have to be uncomfortable.

Same here. I am perfectly comfortable in a velvet-ish dress, tights and shoes.

As a pp said, if you can't dress up for Christmas, when can you? When did "comfortable" come to equal "nightclothes" or "tracksuits" ??

I don't actually own PJs but I can wear a nightdress the other 364 days of the year. It's nice to take a shower and put on festive clothing and meet back in the lounge with everyone having made an effort.

Needmorelego · 22/11/2024 23:35

@BettyBardMacDonald I don't wear shoes indoors. Tights and a dress are fine if you have the right body shape.
I don't. I'm hippo shape 😂
@AllProperTeaIsTheft I don't understand why some people think that all loungewear/trackies/pyjamas must be some old scruffy things and not actually nice quality clothing 😂😂😂

NerrSnerr · 22/11/2024 23:54

@BettyBardMacDonald surely it should be 'if you can't where what you want to on Christmas Day when can you?'

It's not hard is it? Some people feel happy dressing up, other people feel happy wearing pyjamas or loungewear.

Why is either wrong? Do what makes you happy.

Opentooffers · 23/11/2024 00:00

Done plenty of PJ days, crept in on days off during covid, especially when I had covid. But that was just a way of dealing with the days of trauma of working in intensive care, during the time of covid. Now it's occasional, probably due to dealing with the amount of death during covid - its an exprience that changes you, you never entirely forget. Ain't no showering going on those days, otherwise I'd of got dressed after.
Pj's till lunchtime on days off, is still common.
Seen people on the streets, while walking my dog in PJ'S, seen people taking DC's to school in Pj's, go to local supermarket in the evening on way home from work, and see people in Pj's- I'd say 'chavs' describes it - and I'll get flamed for that opinion maybe. But I don't mind it, though its not for me.
Never done it Xmas day as either been at work- as I will be this year, or been at other family for Xmas Dinner or entertained myself. So yea, I've had pj days, but it's most likely a sign that I'm taking a time out to process day - or 'not give a shit day' so I can recoup for the days in-between. Hmm...this got dark, not the OP's point of a PJ day no doubt. Just goes to show, people do it for lots of reasons.

aphrodites · 23/11/2024 00:26

I get out of my pyjamas as soon as I wake up, regardless of what day of the year it is. I'm autistic, so very set in my ways. The thought of wearing regular clothes in bed makes me ill bleurg, the equivalent of wearing shoes in bed to me. I don't eat in bed either which I know many people love.

I woke up this morning to the realisation that @Parker231 is pulling our leg!

Well played, Parky - I actually believed that you had 17 people celebrating Christmas in their pyjamas, there was a theme and a competition 😂

Sorry to disappoint you but it will be happening on Christmas Day as the tradition has for our family for many years now.
I’m in the uk for a few days and will be hitting up the London shops today shopping for this year’s pyjamas!

I don't understand why some people think that nice clothes have to be uncomfortable.

same here like how ? I am a freak according to mumsnet as I lay on my sofa last night watching a film wearing god forbide a pair of jeans. i wfh some days a week and wear jeans most of time as warm. when in office I dress up a bit but all rhe time I am comfortable. I don't own uncomfortable clothes 🤷‍♀️ we are going to my sis for Xmas day I won't be super dressed up but I will put on nice jeans or trousers and a jumper dressed but comfortable. Still be able to play on floor wirh kids or go out with then on their bikes
if your clothes are not comfortable you need to buy new clothes

BettyBardMacDonald · 23/11/2024 09:51

@Wexone
I have done a bit of research over the years and the trend toward wearing PJs and stretch leisurewear instead of structured clothing tracks strongly with the increasing epidemic of obesity. People are uncomfortable in non-stretch or tailored clothing for obvious reasons.

Just look at old photos taken in public places.

Good point. wearing jeans and trousers most of time let's me know when weight is creeping up again.

I don’t think wearing pyjamas on Christmas Day is going to cause me to put on any weight? I’ll be in ski gear in the evening.

redalex261 · 23/11/2024 10:17

No!! Christmas day I must get dressed and wear something nice, like what I would wear to go out for a casual meal in the evening. Slippers are the only concession! Oh and hair and face done. otherwise the photos are horrendous....

Movinghouseatlast · 23/11/2024 10:35

Wonderi · 22/11/2024 06:48

Bloody hell unclench!
Your home sounds like a dictatorship.

Christmas day is meant to be a joyful celebration filled with love and happiness.

Yours sounds fake and forced.

If there’s one day where you (and more importantly your kids) shouldn’t worry about appearances, then it’s Christmas Day or one day over the Xmas period.

People who choose to wear PJs or normal clothes or Xmas jumpers, aren’t doing anything differently to what you do on Christmas Day and so I don’t know why you assume they’re slouching around and you aren’t.

You aren’t better than anyone else just because you wear new clothes on the day and make your kids and DH do the same.

And a Merry Christmas to you too!

She was only expressing an opinion, no need to be horrible. If this is how you speak to people in real life your Christmases must be a real blast.

Even with pyjamas on, I’ll still have done my hair, same as I would do any day. The photos (of which there will be many) won’t be horrendous because of what we are wearing. Seems quite a shallow viewpoint.

There are numerous peer-reviewed academic papers on the topic, just to start.

No to PJs all day- I have breakfast in my red silk PJs and dressing gown then change into christmas jumper and jeans/leggings to cook. Around 3pm I put on something smart and we have champagne before dinner. I'll wear my late mother's favourite dressy tunic ( with a silk camisole, leather trousers and dressy ankle boots - mum wore the tunic, which is lovely, on special occasions in her last few years. I've worn it on Christmas day for the 2 years since she passed and will continue to do so as it makes me feel she's with me. In the morning I also wear her lovely red velvet Christmassy dressing gown ( she was very stylish)
