To think this is an unacceptable wage?

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 14/11/2024 09:41

I'm a qualified teacher with 21 years' experience who has just started supply so flexibility with a poorly husband and three kids of my own.
Just did a full day supply (8.30-3.30) and came out with £112 net.
Hubby thinks decent wage, I think piss-take!
Opinions please!

@StickyWikkit Why don't non-teachers ever understand that we can't work in the bloody holidays?!!!!!

@Fluufer She's just had a birthday - I do beg your pardon!
My daughter also attends school :) * *

Oh no, she is aging backwards apparently. As pp says, you don't teach maths do you?

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 17/11/2024 19:44

@Donsyb Where's the sick pay then?

You’d get SSP like the rest of us!

no comment on the fact you are entitled to holiday pay despite you keep saying you’re not?

"Supply teachers (whether agency or otherwise) are not covered by the contractual sick pay or maternity pay provisions but may be entitled to statutory sick pay or maternity pay rights in certain circumstances."

@Fluufer She's 65 so not exactly elderly. My husband also takes holiday because our daughter is equally his responsibility.

I thought he wasn't working because he was ill?

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 17/11/2024 20:24

@IVFmumoftwo Where have I ever said that?!!!

So just like many of us in the private sector then!

And you still haven’t addressed the fact you ARE entitled to holiday pay…..

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 17/11/2024 22:03

@Donsyb How does that work when I only supply a max 2 days per week?

It's a percentage increase on your regular pay - you might see it in your pay packet.

Agency workers can get "holiday pay" although they don't take holidays

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 17/11/2024 22:21

@cakeorwine Thanks. Checked my payslip and literally only deduction was tax at £28.

I don't think £16 ph is acceptable tbh. 4 years at uni, degree and PGCE, 21 years of teaching.

Your rant was about your pay rate, not how many hours you can work.

Your maths

From the skills you're showing here, I'm not sure teaching is for you.

You started with comparing a net rate after second job tax with a gross rate minimum wage

You then went on to complain about not having enough hours, and needing flexibility, however in later posts say you have a mother with Benjamin Button syndrome (or at least claimed by another poster - although they could have been confused by your post about your in laws)

You then said, you would earn more money by working as a cleaner, where the rate was 18.50(gross) against your supply rate of 16 (net)

I also hope you don't teach debate or diplomacy, as you just shout people down who don't agree with you,

Will I receive holiday pay?
All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay

So the pay you got probably is inclusive of holiday pay

You’re funny.

every time someone points out some sort of logical inconsistency in your argument you throw a flashbang misdirect outrage at something tangential.

i admire the resolve in avoiding self reflection at any cost, as well as the creativity in finding outrage in a movie reference. Not sure why anyone is still engaging with you in a substantive manner though…

also, you make me really grateful that my kids are not in state school.

Youthiswastedontheyoung · 17/11/2024 23:04

@Labraradabrador I don't find it funny when someone (incorrectly) refers to my 66 yo mother as having "Benjamin Button Syndrome". See my above post.
I find it abhorrent.
I'm glad your kids are not in state school too if you, as a parent, think such terminology is acceptable.

@nothingcomestonothing Well I've now secured myself a part-time job as a cleaner for £18.50 p/h so I'm well happy! 👌

Is that an employed job, or freelance OP?

If self-employed, don't forget to register for Class 2 NICs with HMRC and put £40.45 a week aside for your tax return.

You should end up with £144.55/week net from your 10 hours cleaning over 2 days (rather than £112 net from 6.5 hours supply teaching in a single day).

Or 29% more net pay from 53% more hours. And no weekday off.

But if that works for you because it's guaranteed & year round, fair enough!
