The cynical part of me is wondering if he's been given the Children in Need challenge to raise his profile because he's not all that good as a DJ and there's been a lot of grumbling about that. Hats off to him it's a good cause and I wouldn't want to do it, but I'm baffled at him being a radio presenter.

Because he's the best part of 4 hours drive south from me lol

Many of us don't consider Manchester etc.. to be north.

It's in the Northwest of England ,where do yoy think it is?

Vallan · 12/11/2024 10:37

HelenInHeels · 12/11/2024 10:00

Agree entirely. There's the proper DJs who are all about music first (though they do need to be able connect more generally) such as Edith Bowman, Jo Whiley, Whispering Bob, Johnnie Walker and even Tony Blackburn, then radio presenters that don't really know about music very much at all (Zoe Ball, Sara Cox, Scott Mills) and then those 'famous' for something else (Paddy McGuiness, Vernon Kay, Romesh Ranganathan, Rulan, Rob Beckett Street, Alex Jones, the weatherman whose name I've forgotten). The latter group is taking over. In fact I might include Sara Cox in that.

I disagree RE Scott Mills, he has a mammoth music knowledge base.

He's a workaholic, has been successful through his own efforts built up since age 16.

ObieJoyful · 12/11/2024 10:36

What is he then?

Seems like a decent bloke.

Willyoujustbequiet · 12/11/2024 10:40

x2boys · 12/11/2024 10:36

Why?
Wether you like it or not Bolton is on the Northwest of England .

He wouldn't be thought of as northern here to most people.

People have different perspectives based on their own location. Surely you can appreciate that?

No because wether you like it or not bolton is in the Northwest of England ,they haven't moved it ,I appreciate ii isnt North of the UK buy it is in the North of England
Just like Birmingham is Midlands.

AnonymousBleep · 12/11/2024 10:50

I think it's just because he's the newest Radio 2 DJ and the newbie always gets stuck doing the challenge (Vernon last year, Scott Mills the year before). So it was either him or Romesh and Romesh probably didn't have time, what with being on every TV show ever.

leftfootinletfootout · 12/11/2024 10:52

Of course he's bloody northern, what a stupid comment

Willyoujustbequiet · 12/11/2024 12:09

ObieJoyful · 12/11/2024 10:36

But it is.

To you.

It's not to me.

The comment referred to him being a northerner.

He's not in my eyes because he's hundreds of miles south. That's a fact whether you like it or not.

But… geographically, he’s from the north of England. You can’t change that because you live further north! 😂

Hes not a northerner in my book. I'm entitled to that opinion. It's no wonder real northerners get pissed off if people can't accept others have a different view.

PuppyMonkey · 12/11/2024 12:52

I think his R2 show is okay actually. The quiz thing he does is often really funny.

I can’t bear to listen to any of the CiN challenges though, I turn over when there’s an update. Like when Tezza used to do those appalling auctions for experiences money can’t buy. All the filthy rich listeners getting to ring in and have a lovely time going out to dinner with the Spice Girls or something. So tone deaf.

NukaCola · 12/11/2024 12:56

I think it's pretty much compulsory do to this sort of thing if you are on Radio2 and relatively fit. They take it in turns - was Vernon Kaye last year, Dermot O'Leary has done something hasn't he, Scott Mills did a dance-athon, it's Paddy's turn this year.

princesspadam · 12/11/2024 12:57

I was genuinely surprised that people take the time to message into radio 2 to wish him luck!
It was endless 🙄
Do people really do this???

I barely have time to msg people I like

That was dreadful, and I couldn't listen to it either. And people always go on about the sainted Radio God Terry. He started that auction. Chris Evans just took it over and made it even more tone deaf! Ill take boring on about a bike ride over that! Theres a local dance school near me that gets huge amounts of funding from CiN, and I knoew someone who benefitted hugely from it, so I cant begrudge them that. They support and highlight the work of small UK charities.

ExtraOnions · 11/11/2024 12:49

He’s dreadful … he would still be a lifeguard at the local leisure centre, if he hadn’t spent a career holding onto Peter Kay’s coat tails

His TV shows are ratings poison.. and has been one of the least popular appointments to R2 in a long while.

I’ve had funnier bouts if thrush

His accent as well - I know lots and lots of people from Bolton, and none of them speak like that. His moved away years ago, yet his accent gets stronger and stronger - almost like he fakes it (he does)

I totally agree with you.

He said something on Vernon's show today and it could have been Peter Kay speaking. He wouldn't be anywhere if it wasn't for Peter.

Totally talentless

Scott started out on hospital radio so he is a seasoned performer, I'd say!

I’m a ‘real northerner’. I’m confused as to where you think Bolton is though. Midlands; South?

A real northerner (of England) in my opinion is Teesside, Durham, Tyneside, Cumbria and Northumberland. North Yorks would be the cut off but I know many up here wouldn't even agree with that.

Mosalahiwoukd · 12/11/2024 15:42

For the love of God....

Paddy isn't a northerner in my eyes as he's hundreds of miles south of here and in terms of geography from here is more like from akin to the midlands as its halfway to London.

It's not a perspective its a geographical fact ,and im not the one trying to change the map.

Northern England, or the North of England, is a region that forms the northern part of England and mainly corresponds to the historic counties of Cheshire, Cumberland, Durham, Lancashire, Northumberland, Westmorland and Yorkshire. The region also coincides with the medieval era borders of Anglian Northumbria, the Anglo-Scandinavian Kingdom of Jorvik, and the Brythonic Celtic Hen Ogledd kingdoms. The North is a grouping of three statistical regions: the North East, the North West, and Yorkshire and the Humber.

I took this from Wikipedia.

You are a Northerner if you come from Knutsford (which is where I would argue the North begins) or Berwick upon Tweed. There aren't degrees of northernness.

That's also digressing from the point of the post as well
