The cynical part of me is wondering if he's been given the Children in Need challenge to raise his profile because he's not all that good as a DJ and there's been a lot of grumbling about that. Hats off to him it's a good cause and I wouldn't want to do it, but I'm baffled at him being a radio presenter.

I used to really find him annoying but I've warmed to him recently - he was great on Question Time and that series he did with Chris Harris. I don't think he has to do Children in Need challenge to raise his profile - he's pretty successful already.

LadyGAgain · 11/11/2024 22:37

I've loved listening to the build up and then today him starting. Children in Need is an amazing fundraiser and I'm in awe of him riding 300 miles on a chopper - ouch! I enjoy his radio show. I like him on the telly. And I admire parents who nurture, seek to understand and also share (if they have the platform) to raise awareness about autism and other neuro diversity. Hats off to Sir Chris Hoy too - what a man.
Sorry OP. I disagree.

OSU · 11/11/2024 22:42

Every year the newest DJ does it. Zoe Ball did, Vernon Kay etc. It'll probably be in their contract like Strictly is for Eastenders/Casualty stars!

FixTheBone · 11/11/2024 22:43

I thought the AIBU was going to be the challenge itself.... 300miles doesnt seem that much to cycle.... I used to do 150miles a week just to stretch my legs...

Edit. Tbf didnt realise it was on a chopper.... I did have the advantage of a proper bike...

Putthekettleon73 · 11/11/2024 22:44

I really like him. I watched him on who do you think you are and he seemed so genuine and normal and sincerely proud of his roots compared to so many on that programme.

Freethebees · 11/11/2024 22:47

They shouldnt have axed Take Me Out. That was Paddy's finest hour.

AlexaSetATimer · 12/11/2024 00:13

I didn't really have much time for him until recently - watched the series with Chris Harris and found him much more pleasant and thoughtful than I imagined.

Hope he's got a cushion down the back of his jeans for the ride! Ouchie.

Freethebees · 12/11/2024 00:14

Ding dang do.

UnrealRita · 12/11/2024 00:17

OP, haven't you got a sock drawer you can sort or something?

That was a really interesting episode. Lots of people say they won't watch it if it's a celebrity they don't like, forgetting all about the history which can be fascinating. Many said that about Gemma Collins, but that was interesting as well.

Paddy McGuinness has been a presenter on one of (if not the) most successful BBC productions in Top Gear for years. They couldn't really boost his profile any more than that

blobby10 · 12/11/2024 08:50

Its very interesting reading all the different opinions on Paddy McGuinness - I enjoyed him presenting Top Gear with Freddy Flintoff and Chris Harris but hated him presenting AQOS. I don't like his radio show at all so don't listen - don't dislike the northern accent but i find him too shouty . However anyone who cycles 300 miles on a small wheeled bike like a chopper (or Brompton) deserves a lot of kudos, even if they do have a veritable army of support from physios, nutritionists and massage therapists!
I think CIN has probably reached the end of its natural life - it was so awesome in the Terry Wogan days when the whole evening seemed like one big party and went on into the small hours when you could see the exhaustion in everyones face. I was so gutted when it was released that the presenters were actually paid for this work although I would like to think they donated their payment back to the charity incognito. This year I think its only on TV for 3 hours but most of those will be filled with rubbish so probably won't bother even watching.

Drivingoverlemons · 12/11/2024 08:50

A Radio 2 presenter does a children in need challenge every year. Sara Cox did the all day danceathon - pretty sure Zoe did one. Vernon sounded like death after his last year.

I like Paddy McGuiness. The thing he did with Chris whosit from Top Gear about travelling was really enjoyable. Also people from Bolton do talk like that.

HelenInHeels · 12/11/2024 09:08

How can anyone dance for 24 hours?

Vernon's ultra ultra was just last year.

And yes, it's a new presenter to Radio 2 who gets the cin challenge to do.

I mean about the sexting scandal.

LammasEve · 11/11/2024 20:25

Vernon Kay's run was last year.

Personally I can't stand the well paid radio presenters trying to get the public to donate to CiN, why don't they just give up some of their money and stop spending weeks going on and on about how we can donate? And all this week will revolve around this bike ride so it's Greatest Hits all week for me.

I was quoting an op who said Vernon only did his challenge to boost his reputation. I took it to mean after the sexting thing which was a few years ago.

Cynic17 · 12/11/2024 09:24

Comedians generally make poor radio presenters. The skills and style are completely different. Unfortunately, Radio 2 have recently gone overboard on comedians (and they aren't even funny!). Which is why Johnnie Walker is such a big loss, because there is a man who understands the craft of radio presenting.

Vernon raised over £6m last year. Zoe Ball is the highest paid radio 2 presenter and she's on £1m . Even if they all gave all their post tax salaries to CiN it woukdnt raise £6m!

You're never far away from a 'professional Northerner'. My BIL has made it his entire personality.

Not the point of the thread but to many of us he's not even northern.

Agree entirely. There's the proper DJs who are all about music first (though they do need to be able connect more generally) such as Edith Bowman, Jo Whiley, Whispering Bob, Johnnie Walker and even Tony Blackburn, then radio presenters that don't really know about music very much at all (Zoe Ball, Sara Cox, Scott Mills) and then those 'famous' for something else (Paddy McGuiness, Vernon Kay, Romesh Ranganathan, Rulan, Rob Beckett Street, Alex Jones, the weatherman whose name I've forgotten). The latter group is taking over. In fact I might include Sara Cox in that.

Because he's the best part of 4 hours drive south from me lol

Many of us don't consider Manchester etc.. to be north.

Why?
Wether you like it or not Bolton is on the Northwest of England .
