Am I old or has shite behaviour become normal behaviour?

Ok. Fully prepared to be told I am unreasonable but I’m nearly choking from clutching my pearls here….

  1. on a plane last week. Child with iPad on full volume. No attempt to reduce volume and no headphones in sight. No one except me seemed to be bothered so I quietly seethed.

  2. in John Lewis today. Cafe. Quiet and calm except for parents entertaining toddler by playing baby shark over and over. I felt I had to leave. No one else seemed to even flinch.

  3. the gym yesterday. Watching greys anatomy with my headphones on. Still had subtitles because the noise from spin was a LOT. Guy gets on the one next to me and sticks a programme on full volume. I went for pointed look but not up for confrontation tbh. He moved around the gym with his super loud programme following him.

IS THIS NORMAL. Or am I turning into cranky old bint. Am only 46. Didn’t see it coming.

I think something needs to be done.

Transport companies need to clamp down on that sort of behaviour.

The NHS needs to do it as well.

Noseylittlemoo · 11/11/2024 10:30

In my workplace we have a staff room for people to go on their break. The table can comfortably accomodate up to around 6 people . Sometimes people will chat to one another. But often there will be several people scrolling (silently) on their phones, reading , watching something with headphones. Generally if its really busy people will just want to sit and chill. I find it really selfish when someone decides to facetime, make a call or watch something with the sound on. I think they should go outside to a less confined space. But maybe they think I should go outside if I don't want to hear it..🤷‍♀️

GingerLiberalFeminist · 11/11/2024 10:33

Usually it irritates the flick out of me but then on a train the other day a teen bloke was playing radio 4 news and I was totally OK with that 😂

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 11/11/2024 10:48

I think playing loud stuff on public transport comes under antisocial behaviour.

buffyspikefaith · 11/11/2024 11:00

I don't get the yelling into speakerphone conversations with the phone held to their mouth and not their ear

MumOfOneAllAlone · 11/11/2024 11:10

Werp · 10/11/2024 23:54

So your dd has sound playing in public without headphones then..

Very very very low, lower than the sound of a conversation

MumOfOneAllAlone · 11/11/2024 11:11

Wimbledonmum1985 · 11/11/2024 08:38

Why hasn’t she got headphones on?

She has asd and won't wear them

The audio is very very low, I can't hear it unless I lean close to her

MumOfOneAllAlone · 11/11/2024 11:14

Moonlightstars · 11/11/2024 06:21

This isn't to get at you in particular as you not alone but this is what I don't understand. I have 4 kids, all teens or older now and we never used screens when out. It's not essential. And if you do then use headphones. Or do something silent.

I only use it if I need dd to sit still

She has asd and struggles in situations she doesn't understand, ie waiting at the doctors

I'll have the volume very very low, so only she or anyone sat right next to her with their ear as close to the screen as she is can hear it

I try not to have screens out but, for example today we were at the hospital, she became restless and started jumping up and down

I figure a 5yo singing '5 little monkeys' at the top of their lungs while jumping is far more annoying than peppa pig on a super low volume

MumOfOneAllAlone · 11/11/2024 11:15

Ivyn · 11/11/2024 09:35

So you're part of the problem.

No, the volume is incredibly low

You'd only hear it if you were sat at her height, right next to her

Much better than a kid becoming restless and making lots of noise

MumOfOneAllAlone · 11/11/2024 11:16

Gall10 · 11/11/2024 10:16

Low as possible is inaudible to the listener…just turn the sound off completely in a public space.

I don't turn the sound off as she then tries to turn it up as she thinks its broken

Super low so that only her and anyone sat next to her, at the same height, cab hear

Better than a restless child making lots of noise

JoMaloneCandles · 11/11/2024 11:20

I don't see the need of constant screens by adults and children, even when at the gym. We complain about it but then it's the adults implementing and designing these things. Kids I guess are just following that behaviour.

I don't judge other parents though when I see their kids with iPads, I'm sure there are things I can 'correct' as a parent but maybe just oblivious to.

Yep. I feel like standards are just really low in the UK these days, for pretty much everything

As there is always an excuse for everything, naughty is a forbidden word, no-one is ever to blame, they might have some sort of disorder, bad behaviour is always just a snapshot- then what on earth did we think would happen-that people would just self regulate.

They haven't, they won't and this is what we have as a result. Get used to it because there is no putting this genie back in the bottle.

People listening to music or watching videos on public transport with no headphones - whhhyyyy?

Recently seen an increase in kids riding scooters round shops, from H&M to supermarkets. Not even slowly right beside the adult, but freely as if in the park.

Just seems in a rise of people thinking it's fine to be utterly selfish.

Biscuit-taker for me: child being allowed to kick a football around in LEICESTER CATHEDRAL.

whyismysoupcold · 11/11/2024 11:32

We left the cinema on Saturday afternoon because kids were running around, adults were having full blown conversations, and there being so much noise from the audience that we couldn't hear anything being said. I asked my 5 & 4 year olds if they wanted to leave and they said yes.

I could not believe how bad the behaviour was. How is this now the norm? Why has it gotten so bad?

NorthernSpirit · 11/11/2024 11:35

I’m just back from travelling in Japan. It was absolute bliss travelling around.

Everyone was so polite & respectful. Absolutely no one using mobile phones on speaker in public. No one listening to videos which might disturb someone else. People wearing back packs on their fronts on busy trains so not to bump into someone. Everyone so polite.

It was a pleasure travelling around not having to listen to other peoples ’noise’. The UK could learn a lot from this culture of being respectful to others. Sadly we seem to have lost it as peoples self entitlement seems to trump politeness.

I also took a National Express coach (for the 1st time in 20 years) recently and was dreading it due to the likely noise pollution. Before setting off the drive said “if anyone disturbs me listening to something on loud speaker or has a loud conversation that disturbs the other passengers, I’ll pull the bus over and off load you”. It was silent all the way. I wish more public workers had his balls 👏

CleftChin · 11/11/2024 11:36

My friend lets her kid sit in costa with us playing games/videos without headphones. It drives me (and her other child) a bit mad, but apart from asking him to turn it down/supporting her other child when she asks there's not much I can do (at least it's no louder than the music they have on)

Mine immediately puts his on silent if he doesn't have headphones, as does her daughter - I don't get why she lets her son get away with it TBH.

In the train last week, the guy across the aisle was watching clips on his phone with the volume on.
The guard walked past and asked him to put headphones on, which he did.
Sorted.
(I was too chicken to ask!)

Alas, guards rarely do this: mostly just walk straight past.

Pusheen467 · 11/11/2024 11:43

The blaring phones on public transport is sheer torture. I wish I had the balls to say something like some posters do. Also does anyone else think teenagers screeching has gotten worse since the lockdowns? I live next to a school and the teens make more noise then the little kids. They literally stand in the middle of the street and screech for no reason. I can't fucking stand it.

fitzwilliamdarcy · 11/11/2024 11:51

YANBU, I have misophonia and I basically don't leave the house anymore unless I have to. Everything and everyone has just gotten SO LOUD and there's no consideration whatsoever for people whose disabilities require there to be quiet.

Everyone just says "oh tell them to stop and they will", but the only times I've actually dared to say anything, I've gotten a mouthful of abuse or the "aw they're only 4/6/8/12" response.

I really can't with it anymore. Even libraries are now overrun with kids behaving like it's a playground. Nowhere is just allowed to be quiet anymore.

I completely sympathise. I have misophonia too and I had to leave Aldi because some obnoxious cunt wouldn't stop whistling. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me. The last time I used a bus I had to blast white noise in my ears.

shockeditellyou · 11/11/2024 12:07

Why the bloody hell are ward nurses and cabin crew not stamping this out?

FlorbelaEspanca · 11/11/2024 12:07

ChevyCamaro · 11/11/2024 09:16

It’s because people are scared to say anything. And in public transport ( buses anyway) the drivers are told NOT to confront noisy/ disruptive passengers. Even ten years ago, if a load of teens were shouting/ making noise on the top deck the driver would stop the bus, stomp upstairs and tell them the bus is going nowhere until they pack in in, or they can get off.
Now the driver just ignores, and everyone else thinks well if you can’t beat them join them.
I still ask some people to turn it down. Generally teens snigger and whisper to each other, but they do comply. I refuse to be scared to say anything.

This reminds me of an experience I had in Germany once. I was on a tram in Dortmund. At a stop the warning tone sounded then the doors closed, but we didn't move off. The doors reopened. Then the tone sounded etc. but we still didn't move. This happened a couple of times more. Then the loudspeaker crackled on and broadcast an incomprehensible announcement. A pause. Finally the driver came out of his cab, walked down the car to a group of teenage boys and said: 'Bitte steigen aus! Bitte steigen aus!' They had been pressing the stop request button for fun, so he chucked them off.

The thing is… before iPads and tablets, people had other ways to deal with children becoming restless and making lots of noise. Don’t you know how to do that?

Annabella92 · 11/11/2024 06:37

Well I suppose people haven't taken to breaking wind loudly in public yet... that's a positive I guess?

They have, that smell of rotten cabbage mightn't be coming from the one shouting at his phone.
