Goodbye to any hope of peace and safety for the world, or saving the climate, women’s rights and ending racism.
Poor Ukraine will be the first casualty.
Putin will be breaking out the vodka and caviar today.

As well as Americans I feel bad for Ukraine, which he'll hand over to Putin, and Taiwan, as he's not going to even try to stop China invading.

I worry where Putin will go next.

Maybe it’s not the job of the US to police the world?

Less US interference everywhere might be a good thing. If we are worried about Putin then you know, maybe Europe should just pay for its own military.

The EU still has far more people and money than Russia does. Russia should be no match but if it is then it’s because our governments have dropped the ball by relying on the US.

Democracy is broken. It’s probably always been broken, but it’s moving further and further away from what it’s meant to be.

When people vote for someone who is incompetent and doesn’t have their best interests at heart, because they are swayed by manipulative campaigning tactics, then I’m not sure that the power is really in the hands of the people.

Does anyone have a breakdown of votes by age? Hoping the younger generation might be slightly better at critically evaluating information.

It was Gen X and Z that showed up for Trump… he also showed gains with Women.

Who voted for Trump? The Republican’s supporters by age, sex and race

The real estate magnate made decisive gains among Latinos, women and voters without a college degree

Project 2025 represents a transformative initiative with a vision for reshaping policy, technology, and national security landscapes.

why is that bad ?

Oh, you read their blurb! You could at least read a wiki page to try and grasp the ramifications of it. It is horrifying.

But then so is having a convicted felon, rapist, sexual abuser of multiple women and minors, inciter of insurrection, who despises and mocks his followers, who supports a theocracy for his own personal gain, who has said under him there will be no more elections, and who has teamed up with several other billionaires and dictators, currently raping the world, as the leader of the free world.

Momtotwokids · 06/11/2024 20:43

Don't you have enough to worry about in your country? Biden wasn't good, doubt Trump will be any worse. And for the love of God the federal government doesn't have control over abortion but the 50 states.

Momtotwokids · 06/11/2024 20:44

Did you all forget Bill Clinton and things he did?

Gingernaut · 06/11/2024 20:47

Katemax82 · 06/11/2024 10:09

Don't be ridiculous how bad was it last time?

With Republicans forming the majority of both the Senate, the House of Representative and the Presidency, this will be an absolute shit show with nothing to stop Trump's worst excesses

Who has said, there will be no more elections. That's the end of democracy.

Fascism. Theocracy. Misogyny.

PS: Not my president.

he may not be yours but its your fellow citizens that voted for him

besides what if changing democracy as a way presidents are chosen is a good thing, especially if some point there's a president like eg frank underwood that gains power ?

You make such odd sweeping assumptions. Can't read a wiki page. And clearly have no knowledge of history.

How else do you propose choosing them @PlumViper ?

experts in various fields select a leader based on an assessment of expertise, qualifications, and crisis management skills.

Aria999 · 06/11/2024 21:18

Absent democracy, then the person in power is usually someone who has a lot of fighters and weapons and is ruthless enough to use them.

I think Hitler might have made it anyway.

@ForPearlViper what's to stop Elon Musk from running? I'm not knowledgeable enough about American politics to know why.

The US president must be BORN in the US. Musk was born in South Africa.

And what happens if the interests of the experts don't align with everyone else's?

given they got trump, well says it all really about the effectiveness of the democracy process

How is he going to do that?

In terms of Ukraine, the news in general in the USA is very insular that I don’t think many Americans will have much idea about what’s happening or why.

I agree he’ll probably pull support saying he wants to put money back into the US economy rather than giving it away and people will see it as a positive rather than seeing the bigger picture that peace in Europe is something we should all support.

Aria999 · 06/11/2024 21:35

Not really. The difference between democracy and other ways of doing things is that if leaders are unpopular then they can be removed without armed conflict.

No system would always pick a good leader.

‘Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…’
Winston S Churchill, 11 November 1947
