Goodbye to any hope of peace and safety for the world, or saving the climate, women’s rights and ending racism.
Poor Ukraine will be the first casualty.
Putin will be breaking out the vodka and caviar today.

then you have the whims of the general public, and as a result, donald trump

But otherwise you have the whims of kings and emperors and dictators and self-appointed experts.

Do you want Elon Musk not just as kingmaker (bad enough) but as king? Because that's undoubtedly the sort of person you'd get.

As Winston Churchill said, democracy is the worst possible system except for all the others.

Maybe it’s not the job of the US to police the world?

Less US interference everywhere might be a good thing. If we are worried about Putin then you know, maybe Europe should just pay for its own military.

The EU still has far more people and money than Russia does. Russia should be no match but if it is then it’s because our governments have dropped the ball by relying on the US.

And if Trump doesn’t get his way, he’ll threaten to pull out of NATO.

I have not heard anything that indicates that he will and can remove the democratic process in the USA. What exactly had he said that you think indicates he will and can?

Its just been reported on the news that he’s giving big government jobs to his family who have no political experience and business associates like Elon Musk are likely to get roles too, not suggesting this in itself isn’t permitted because it must be but it feels undemocratic.

That does not in any way suggest that he is going to or can make himself a lifetime president does it.

Modern media shapes public perception through simplified, emotionally charged content, often reinforcing biases and limiting critical thought.

Yep Plato and Socrates etc would be so proud of todays population , bravo

Modern media shapes public perception through simplified, emotionally charged content, often reinforcing biases and limiting critical thought.

It has always been this way. Humans are a strange species. Democracy is still better than the alternative. I rather have an emotional citizen voting as an individual than some faceless bureaucrat "expert" casting a vote based on their biased "expertise". As we know experts don't often agree.

all the more reason to not trust the public then

Come off it, it's not like Boden was stellar against Putin now was it?

My thoughts exactly!

What the hell has Johnnie Boden done about Putin?! Bloody nothing! Too busy with his sodding jersey dresses.

Right useless damp squib he turned out to be.

localnotail · 07/11/2024 22:18

I honestly hope that most of the shit Trump was spewing is just that, shit - and nothing else. He doesn't strike me as someone who can do "boring" stuff - more likely will do thing sporadically and on the whim. However, he is vindictive and stupid so can do some damage... He will most definitely try to "punish" people who "wronged" him, and will try to enact his insane immigration policies.

Also, I've heard Putin got some stuff on him so I would imagine he will try to give Ukraine to Putin - I just hope that 1) Europe will step up to help 2) Ukraine will think "fuck this" and will start bombing strategic Russian inland targets as they should have been doing all along.

@PlumViper

Firstly I think you're wrong about Musk. Trump will not long tolerate someone who can potentially upstage him (and is richer than him 😁)

Secondly I don't know how you think these experts are gonna be chosen or by whom.

If you are saying we should vote for a group of people who would then choose the leader I could see that... but it's still democracy...

overall given the sway of the media over the general population and the soundbites etc the public as a whole are not the best ones to judge a managers skills of a country

Aria999 · 08/11/2024 01:48

So who is going to judge it? You personally?

What everyone's having is a rude awakening to what the US has always been about and it's scaring the living daylights out of them.

A mere faintest of whiffs of what black people have had to endure in that country though, it has to be said.

Musk likes government money like Trump likes his daddy's.

Both are prime examples of the positions world-class charlatans are capable of manipulating themselves into, just as both have enough inherited/granted wealth for the interest alone to recoup losses incurred by their serial failures.

Hardly surprising when that's exactly what he did last time. Remember the know-nothing SIL Jared Kushner being put in charge of a peace plan for Israel/Palestine? Naturally, the plan was rejected by both sides.

But whose are? The decision-makers in non-democratic countries rarely make good choices.

Billionaires can definitely influence a lot if they want. Some do it quietly and I believe they are more dangerous.

But Biden and Kamala were elected four years ago. This is on the Democrats they alienated people and did a really bad run in this government’s term. They lied while saying Trump was the liar.

What has Trump told the truth about? He has kept fact checker busy throughout the election campaign.

It was Gen X and Z that showed up for Trump… he also showed gains with Women.

He got less votes this time than in 2020.

This is a good article about what the democrats did wrong. (Apologies if it's behind a paywall, I'm not a subscriber but it was shared with me by a subscriber so I can't 100% tell)

The USA has always promised to protect Taiwan. It's how it still exists as a country now.

I suppose you'd prefer Putin to police the world instead.

Do you think the USA should have stayed out of WWII as well?
