Given that Trump is elected.

OP posts:

Didn’t this just happen under Bidens administration?

They can also move states.

It was the supreme court that overturned the previous 1973 law abortions being legal and the states that now don't allow abortions are conservative voting states.

And what do you mean they can move states? Should all pregnant women move to a different state in case they get sick or injured during pregnancy and needs healthcare?

LeighaStand · 06/11/2024 07:49

Maybe, unreasonable, but feels very unsafe. Very unwelcoming, very divided.

Not a country I want to spend time in.

I mean, I’m as disappointed as the next person about the result, but America was divided before this election, and would have been just as divided if Harris has won. It’s a bit nonsensical to use the election result as a line in the sand on that score. In fact if anything, exit polls suggest Trump has united a more diverse voter base than expected.

Is America a divided country? Yes
is it unwelcoming of tourists? No moreso than the next place
is it unsafe? Depends where you go and what your risk tolerance is. Tbh it’s probably safer today than it would have been if Harris won- civil unrest from Trumps thugs was a real possibility.

You do you, but you were daft to book that holiday in the first place if those are your concerns today. They held true then.

Got back from New York 2 days ago. Didn't feel the least bit unsafe as opposed to other times I've been there. The bothersome thing was the legalisation of cannabis more than anything. The stench was repulsive, rather like Trump.

I cannot stand the smell and when it's everywhere, I end up with a massive headache.

MadamePeriwinkle · 06/11/2024 08:31

I feel the same. I don’t want to support the economy of country that has elected a misogynist, megalomaniacal lunatic tbh.

Will be trying to avoid American brands as much as possible going forward.

To all those wondering why the OP might think of cancelling... not everyone would want to put their hard earned cash into a fascist regime.

Echobelly · 06/11/2024 08:31

I wouldn't cancel an existing one but I don't think I'll be planning to go there in the foreseeable. Certainly no pregnant woman should travel there unless she really has to because if she has any complications... well, we've seen what's happening already and that's before a national ban which will almost certainly happen now.

RoachFish · 06/11/2024 08:37

CraftyNavySeal · 06/11/2024 08:26

Exactly like Poland and Malta then. A woman in Poland died fairly recently for the same reason.

The US has the same abortion policy as the EU - it’s up to member states to decide.

Not going to France because abortion is illegal in Poland is daft, same way not going to New York for the same reason is daft.

Edited

Well yea, I think abortions should be a choice everywhere but we are now discussing the US. It's not the same as not going to France because in Poland abortions are illegal, they are not part of the same country and aren't ruled by the same (orange) president. The US is actively choosing to become a more dangerous place for women to live in by changing laws that allow women reasonable healthcare. This only affects women, not men.

StopPinsAndNeedles · 06/11/2024 07:49

It's good news for women, now that we will have the definition and safeguarding back.

World war was on the cards regardless, it's bad news for Europe as Putin will push pass Ukraine.

Not such great news for the women who want to be pregnant, have miscarriages, and are refused treatment such as D&Cs to prevent sepsis, because treatment of miscarriages is too abortion-adjacent and is now illegal for 1/3 of American women. Another woman died last week.

How is trump a fascist? I see him as a populist.

Modranihtandtomtens · 06/11/2024 08:40

There are many countries I actively avoid for political reasons. Appreciate that I'm just one person, and not likely to bump into the leaders/change makers whilst there, but I don't want to give them my money/support by being a tourist in their country. So if this tips America into that pot for you then I can understand.

Good news for women?????????

Not pregnant women, or women who miscarry, and in the very near future l fear not for women seeking birth control.

A president who thinks it’s fine to grab women by the pussy. Still he knows what a woman is so hooray for Trump.

The move to fascism is a journey, and with Trump and the things he is on record as saying and supporting, that journey has well a d truly begun in the US. The fear now is how far along the journey it will go over the next 4 years.

People on both the left and right of US politics have been wargaming (together) what he might do, and whether US democracy is strong enough to withstand it. The fact that is seen as necessary, and that there are people on the right as fearful as those on the left is quite horrifying.

Good news for women...unless you need to make a critical decision about your health, of course 👌🏻 Because even doctors have no idea what decisions they can make without risking jail time 🤷‍♀️

(Quick reminder...as you seem to have conveniently forgotten, Roe -v- Wade)

Do you only visit countries that you approve of Politically? Or is this just Virtue Signalling Twattery?

I8toys · 06/11/2024 08:44

I've never felt the need to visit tbh so YANBU

OhshutupSimonyounobhead · 06/11/2024 08:45

I think YABU after all Trump is going to make America great again isn't he?

Yes, I would.
Same as I would not visit Dubai

Me too.

DaphnesCafe · 06/11/2024 08:46

What a strange reaction, what do you think will happen if you visit? America is an amazing country and I will continue to travel there.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 06/11/2024 08:47

Like UK have never been divided over political issues...🙄.

Djanwb · 06/11/2024 08:47

Did America (or the world in general) collapse during 2017-2021? No it didn't.

It's actually pretty common for people to apply ethics to their travel choices. I refused a family holiday to apartheid South Africa and I don't visit death penalty regimes. Odd that you think there's something wrong with having principles.
