Have you ever stopped to think that a racist misogynist ableist homophobe convicted criminal President may not have the best affect on an already racist misogynistic ableist homophobic country?

Have you ever stopped to think that this isn't his first rodeo? What unspeakable things happened to visitors the first time he was President? Do tell.

I'm far from being a Trump fan but the ridiculous comments on this thread are almost laughable. Especially given that many of them come from people inhabiting a nation which had Boris Johnson as PM.

He has fewer checks and balances this time around.

He has control of the possibly all three arms of legislative government - that is, Congress, the Senate, and the Judiciary. At the moment, the only one of those still undecided is Congress, but is looking on going to Republicans.

Additionally, having learned from staff problems from his first term, Trump will only surround himself with loyalists. Having people that are brave enough to disagree with you or say ‘no’ is valuable in leadership positions, but Trump, it seems, cannot handle this. Those people in the first term might have stopped some terrible things occurring, but loyalists may lack the courage or appetite to stop Trump’s worst urges this time around.

I’m no fan on Boris Johnson but you can’t compare him to Donald Trump. He wasn’t a convicted criminal. He didn’t boast about assaulting women. He didn’t try to ban abortion. He wasn’t a climate change denier. He wasn’t trying to deregulate guns. He didn’t threaten to withdraw support for Ukraine. He didn’t ban trans people from the military. He hasn’t denied the outcomes of elections and attempted a self-coup, encouraging his supporters to storm public buildings. They’re both self-serving populists but they are no where near the same and the level of threat they pose is incomparable. Boris Johnson could be better compared to George Bush.

Do you feel the same about Italy ? Seeing Meloni’s extreme far right government ?

I think your over reacting I don't think you will bump in to him while your there

Many years ago when living in New York I was crossing the road by Trump Tower and we passed each other. You never know, although now he would be surrounded by far more security guys than he was then!

I know we had BJ as PM (unfortunately) and once he was in there was precious little we could do about it, including, for the most of us, move country. But boycotting visits to the US is something we can control.

That was my point. No place, no person, is all bad nor all good. But, if one decides to make judgements of others, they should be prepared to be judged with the same rod themselves.

Just felt the need to make absolutely clear that I didn't vote in favour of Brexit. That outcome doesn't speak for me. I am delighted that we still have the right to free speech though. To judge a whole country by votes is simplistic but I struggle to understand how electing a convicted felonist for a president was a good idea. 🤦‍♀️ And people who believe it is a clever idea to let anyone own a gun.

You've summed it up well. I'm pretty sure Trump ran for president as a move to avoid going to prison.

Babadookinthewardrobe · 07/11/2024 11:03

Blimey, that’s a very expensive and long-winded prison avoidance plan @Oxforddictionary12 . Couldn’t he have just bought a wig and false nose and moved to Marbella?

LeighaStand · 06/11/2024 07:49

Maybe, unreasonable, but feels very unsafe. Very unwelcoming, very divided.

Not a country I want to spend time in.

Sorry but it was that way before he was re-elected and you booked the holiday then. The US has been a divided place for many years. Depends where you are going and what you are doing…..

It would have saved a lot of heartache 😂

You'd need to live here and have to deal with the tons of drugs brought into this country weekly and the millions of people that have crossed the border illegally to understand the desire to own a gun.
Guns are sent over the border every single day. Every gang member owns at least one, and ditto for criminals. Cartels and gangs own armories of weapons.
Hopefully, you are not so naive to think any of those people would ever give up their guns? If law-abiding citizens gave up their guns, no one would ever be safe again from cartels, gangs and criminals.

It would be nice to get rid of all the criminals, gangs and cartels, but SA, CA and Mexico just keep letting them come north, and our home-grown ones just keep multiplying to boot.
