Oh get a grip and go on your holiday. Or cancel it and go to Benidorm. Whatever.

Ooh didn't notice you there Mr President!

See OP, he doesn't mind what you do.

Does this only applies to “tourist pennies” or do you refuse to buy Chinese goods because of their government? Do you own a mobile phone that has Israeli made chips in it? Or is it just easy to score points online by railing against Trump?

At least America is a democracy.

I buy consciously, ethically and locally wherever feasibly possible. Besides this thread is specifically about travel to the US, which is what I was replying to. If you have another axe to grind, start your own thread.

No axe to grind, just asking. If you’re not going to travel to the US because you don’t like the government (as per the OP) just wondering if that applies to other things too.

It was also intended as a reply to the post you were replying to but has ended up being a reply to your reply!

It's so progressive, don't you know now, in Ireland, this is the Irish loving on women.

www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/barbie-kardashian-acquitted-by-jury-over-charges-of-threats-to-cause-harm-1687705.html

Your cod ‘Oirish’ notwithstanding (way to be condescending by the way), yes, empirically speaking, Ireland has progressed beyond the dark days of the 80s and 90s when I was growing up there and there was no access to reproductive healthcare and women were trapped in abusive marriages with no legal way out.

Djanwb · 06/11/2024 13:06

Is there a sensible way for the states to readily allow a medical exemption whilst maintaining the ban on non life threatening terminations?

Now you trap them in prisons worse than any laundry?

Nuns and Priests have been replaced by secular progressives in power and on a jury.

Women always went to England for abortions.

StopPinsAndNeedles · 06/11/2024 13:24

I have Irish ancestry and I have to say that the Irish regardless of ideology are the most misogystic and regressive male supremacists going.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 06/11/2024 13:38

@StopPinsAndNeedles so you are an expert on a culture and ethnicity because of your ancestry? Maybe your ancestors are a bunch of assholes, you don't get to generalise about a culture you don't live in.

You know Donald Trumps Mum was Scottish right? He is half BRITISH. Is he a representative of British culture?

Why are you on a UK site lecturing the English, if you never set foot here?

Did Europeans cancel travel plans when we voted for Brexit?

BruFord · 06/11/2024 13:53

Clearinguptheclutter · 06/11/2024 07:52

I’d go to a blue state. I have plenty of US colleagues and almost without exception they are going to be in despair. A lot of the US continues to loathe Trump.

This ^^

Every state has its own personality and solidly blue states are very different to red states.

You can’t compare it to the UK, it’s more like visiting European countries within the EU umbrella. Each one is governed differently and attracts different types of people. California is completely different to Texas, for example.

Beebumble2 · 06/11/2024 13:59

You probably won’t be able to afford it when the tariffs on British imports take place. Economists are predicting Britain will experience a rise in cost of living and interest rates!

Can you imagine this in July "Im really concerned about travelling to the UK now, Labour have just won a landslide victory against the Tories, what might happen?"

Meanwhile Brits just getting on with their day

The only thing that would put me off going somewhere is serious weather related issues like wildfires, hurricanes, earthquakes, or something dangerous like a country currently at war.

Feelingathomenow · 06/11/2024 14:03

ChickenoftheWoods · 06/11/2024 10:47

The UK is equally divided.

To be fair, so is the majority of the West. It’s a deliberate ploy. Binary thinking and tribalism at every level

Givemethreerings · 06/11/2024 14:07

No, not unreasonable.

The choice to travel to the USA may be taken out of people’s hands - eg Trump plans to reinstall the so-called ‘Muslim ban’ in 2025.

So it may also depend on your nationality and religion. Or if you take a position of solidarity with others who are impacted by Trump policies.

Seashellssanctuary · 06/11/2024 14:07

LeighaStand · 06/11/2024 07:49

Maybe, unreasonable, but feels very unsafe. Very unwelcoming, very divided.

Not a country I want to spend time in.

If it was because you hated Trump then fair enough, but thinking its unsafe is ridiculous. You are more likely going to come to harm getting to the airport here

Dodappydah · 06/11/2024 14:12

Goodness me, grow up,.what exactly do you expect to happen to you on your holiday to the US? Some perspective needed with many people today.

Probably nothing. On the other hand, I wouldn't travel anywhere abortion is illegal if there was any chance I might be pregnant.

Do you normally look into the abortion laws of your holiday destinations? I've never given it a thought.

Deja321 · 06/11/2024 14:32

Only since becoming politically aware of this issue. I went on a work trip to the Dominican Republic when I knew for sure I wasn't pregnant, but refused to go on a subsequent one when I knew I was pregnant because I couldn't be sure I'd be given life saving treatment if I needed it.

In Malta there was that case of a female tourist having to be transported to Spain for medical treatment when she developed life threatening complications during a miscarriage.

I have an IUD and so if I did find myself unexpectedly pregnant there's a high risk it could be ectopic. I would not want to be in Texas when I found that out.

Deja321 · 06/11/2024 14:32

Yes. Abortion is only prohibited in 11 countries (not typical holiday destinations- they include Iran, Nicaragua, Mauritania) and I’d certainly take pause before booking travel, in case I had a miscarriage while going to any of these.

Brefugee · 06/11/2024 15:07

Boohoo76 · 06/11/2024 11:16

It’s still illegal in Malta. People seem to overlook that when they are screaming about the USA.

Ireland was clearly an issue if you went, were pregnant and had complications that may require a termination. As is Malta. Poland. Germany has very strict regulations etc ad nauseum ad infinitum.

I do think that if you are planning to travel while pregnant, it would be better to check what the country you are going to has as an attitude in that respect.

I see lots of "visit Dubai" "visit Qatar" "visit Saudi" ads on the TV. Full of bikini clad blond women jumping in and out of pools etc. And i think: FUCK YOU. I've been to China (for work) in places that see very few westerners. I wouldn't go for a holiday. I hanker for a visit to Russia (I visited the Soviet Union back in the 70s/80s) but - nope. Not now.

Each of us is free (yaay for Western Democracy) to go wherever we want on holiday. Each of us is free to place restrictions on ourselves on where we go.

But as pp have said - actually in terms of what it is going to be like in the US over the next few years? Probably pretty much as it has been for the last few years. If you want to go, go. If you don't, don't.

As an American, I am devastated that Trump won.

However, I take issue at your assertion that we are unwelcoming. Americans are about the most welcoming people you'll meet.

But if you don't want to spend time here, don't come. You won't be missed.

Not until the case in Ireland of the woman that died of sepsis, which was roughly similar time when I was admitted to hospital in england during my miscarriage.

It made me realise that when pregnant access to healthcare is something to consider.
