Given that Trump is elected.

OP posts:
Beebumble2 · 06/11/2024 17:02

Sorry, some of my grammar is poor there. I was editing, obviously badly 😂

MermaidEyes · 06/11/2024 17:10

I can understand that. I feel the same about the UK, tbh. Rainy, expensive and too many whiners running around.

Gotta agree with this and I'm a Brit 😆

MugPlate · 06/11/2024 17:21

What are the other places on your list OP?

TempestTost · 06/11/2024 17:22

Pretty unlikely anything odd will happen to you OP, unless maybe you are going to be going to the White House or something like that.

I'd be more concerned about going to a place like Cuba. (And to be clear, I wouldn't really worry about going to Cuba if it was the kind of holiday I wanted.)

WinterTreacle · 06/11/2024 17:28

Definitely will not be visiting a country where the majority voted for a dangerous lunatic. Says a lot about the country and none of it good.

Might be a strong response but I also would not want to support their economy under Trump.

It is also a moral decision for me. I fear for Ukraine and the Middle East. It is a serious threat. There are PLENTY of other places to visit.

What are the other places on your list OP?

Tehran, Pyongyang and Caracas.

Off topic, but why is San Francisco like this? My friend went recently and was horrified by the level of street homelessness and mental illness. Why is it like this? I have never been but it always looked like a fun and interesting city in the films….

Lots of reasons. But as in the UK, a lot of the homelessness comes down to not building enough housing for the people who are there.

In fact that seems to be the main issues throughout many western countries, home building has fallen behind need. Which is interesting in itself, it suggests maybe the cause isn't particular governments so much.

Anyway - they also have a huge drug problem, like many other places, they are huge on harm reduction which seems not to have worked like they planned

. And they stupidly decriminalized things like theft under $1000 so they are having huge issues with theft, and stores are pulling out of cities in many areas. Making these awful ghost towns.

Thank you very much for the link to the New Yorker article. I loved S.F. as a city, its history, architecture and people. Reading the article made me feel sad, but hopeful that it will rise again, as it did after the earthquake and fire.

PrincessOlga · 06/11/2024 17:52

I think you should cancel your plans. Then maybe you could write a cheque to the Democratic Party or whoever fundraises for them with, say, 25% of the funds you saved by staying at home? I am sure people on here will know where to send your money, so it can be sent on raising awareness of the issues you care about. You would also be reducing your carbon footprint.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 06/11/2024 07:48

Yanbu at all. I wouldn't be setting foot in a country that had just elected a leader with fascist tendencies.

A bit rich considering the leader of the uk was locking citizens in prison for shouting at police dogs not too long ago.

sunflowersngunpowdr · 06/11/2024 18:05

LeighaStand · 06/11/2024 07:49

Maybe, unreasonable, but feels very unsafe. Very unwelcoming, very divided.

Not a country I want to spend time in.

Then don't go. I doubt that any American (or anyone else) cares.

DdraigGoch · 06/11/2024 18:25

StopPinsAndNeedles · 06/11/2024 08:11

They can move to a blue state and abort away to their hearts content.

No they can't. Because some red states are keeping a close watch on the movements of pregnant women. Apart from which, a woman who miscarries (even if the pregnancy was 'wanted') risks prosecution.

Speaking as an American - no, we don’t. Do whatever you want, OP, no one here is going to know the difference.

ForGreyKoala · 06/11/2024 19:03

Katiesaidthat · 06/11/2024 09:30

You are spectacularly missing the point. I don´t travel to certain countries as I don´t like their religion, and don´t spend money in regimes that impose the death penalty. Those are my red lines. Whether those countries will care, will be in financial ruin or not, is irrelevant.

So all you are doing is making yourself feel morally superior - no-one else cares, why do we need to know?

LemonyCoughSyrup · 06/11/2024 19:08

I will go as I have family there and go there on work trips, it’s ridiculous to think suddenly the country has changed as they voted in someone. They felt like this before the vote and will when Trump isn’t there. It’s just part of US culture. I despise him but there’s a lot more to the US than their president and millions didn’t vote for him

ForGreyKoala · 06/11/2024 19:16

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 06/11/2024 15:59

I can understand that. I feel the same about the UK, tbh. Rainy, expensive and too many whiners running around.

I do laugh though, a country the size of Europe but with less to see. We may be a "new country" compared to Europe but there are hundreds of places to see. I also think some of the world is just too ignorant to know that. 😆

Well said. There sure are some ignorant Brits on MN, and yet they seem to think they are superior to the rest of us who are fortunate enough not to live there.

lasagnelle · 06/11/2024 19:17

Do whatever you want mate

Ytcsghisn · 06/11/2024 19:22

OP you are massively unreasonable to depriving Trump and America of your gracious presence. Trump will be distraught.

Yes, I would.
Same as I would not visit Dubai

Right there with you re USA and Dubai. Never understood how people reconcile it in their heads!

StopPinsAndNeedles · 06/11/2024 07:49

It's good news for women, now that we will have the definition and safeguarding back.

World war was on the cards regardless, it's bad news for Europe as Putin will push pass Ukraine.

What on earth?! Good news for women?!

You are deluded and a disgrace to women.

StMarieforme · 06/11/2024 19:41

HelpMeGetThrough · 06/11/2024 07:57

I'm off there next week for work. I can't see any reason for cancelling the visit.

Well he's not in till January.

StMarieforme · 06/11/2024 19:43

Werecat · 06/11/2024 08:00

Oh for heavens sake, stop being silly. Life will continue, pretty calmly actually. The USA will continue to be fine to visit. Stop with the overreacting.

Have you ever stopped to think that a racist misogynist ableist homophobe convicted criminal President may not have the best affect on an already racist misogynistic ableist homophobic country?

StMarieforme · 06/11/2024 19:44

@StopPinsAndNeedles what a vile thing to say. As if it's ever an easy decision.
