Given that Trump is elected.

Ireland was clearly an issue if you went, were pregnant and had complications that may require a termination. As is Malta. Poland. Germany has very strict regulations etc ad nauseum ad infinitum.

I do think that if you are planning to travel while pregnant, it would be better to check what the country you are going to has as an attitude in that respect.

I see lots of "visit Dubai" "visit Qatar" "visit Saudi" ads on the TV. Full of bikini clad blond women jumping in and out of pools etc. And i think: FUCK YOU. I've been to China (for work) in places that see very few westerners. I wouldn't go for a holiday. I hanker for a visit to Russia (I visited the Soviet Union back in the 70s/80s) but - nope. Not now.

Each of us is free (yaay for Western Democracy) to go wherever we want on holiday. Each of us is free to place restrictions on ourselves on where we go.

But as pp have said - actually in terms of what it is going to be like in the US over the next few years? Probably pretty much as it has been for the last few years. If you want to go, go. If you don't, don't.

Which is exactly what I did when I was last pregnant as I had serious complications in my previous pregnancy which meant that my baby had to be delivered otherwise I would die.

bolwin1 · 06/11/2024 15:26

There are loads of countries I don't agree with the government / political situation - USA, Hungary, Poland, Dubai, Serbia etc. Wouldn't stop me visiting them & it won't stop me going to the USA on Saturday for a 2 week holiday. I would draw the line at visiting Russia or Belarus though.

Pineapplesandthegovernmentandpunkrock · 06/11/2024 15:30

I have had very lovely times in the US under Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump and Biden. I'm not white and did not feel unsafe from my contact with American humans - who by and large were charming and welcoming to tourists, even in supposedly unfriendly New York. I think you are being a tad over-dramatic, OP.

As for people talking about not wanting to go there whilst pregnant, abortion rights following the repeal of Roe v Wade by the Supreme Court are States purely rights, and no constitutional scholar thinks there is anything that is going to change that now through federal governance (ie Trump). There are plenty of liberal states that offer full abortion rights, rights that are far and beyond the rights you get in the UK and most of Europe. Oregon in particular is an utterly beautiful place and is very liberal in its abortion laws. If you are genuinely worried, just avoid the red states and stick to the blue ones where you will have full protection.

I do agree with pp though: how many of you have gone or would go to somewhere like Dubai, not giving a single thought to what might happen to you as a woman there?

EverythingAllatOnceAllTheTime · 06/11/2024 15:31

I love the US and the vast majority of Americans I have met - terrific people.

As a Brit I respect their electoral rights.

I look forward to visiting the US again soon.

bubblesun · 06/11/2024 15:32

Do so, if it will make you feel happier than the holiday itself, but Trump won't know, he's never going to find out and he simply wouldn't care Grin

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 06/11/2024 15:34

Unless you are David Lammy then I don’t see why you should cancel.

ClytemnestraWasMisunderstood · 06/11/2024 09:03

Obviously, this is not possible for many - why be so literal? However, if I lived there, I would actively be exploring ways to leave; and yes, I would uproot my family to get away from the shit-shower that will be the next 4 years (until of course, he makes himself lifetime president)

Well, other countries, including the UK, Canada, Mexico, Sweden, Germany, etc. all have immigration laws, and you need to have pretty deep pockets before they let you in.

Maybe you could sponsor a few hundred? Let them move in, feed them etc.? LMK--k?

We won’t be going now, don’t want to give the us economy a penny more than I have to. Tbh the gun laws put me off anyway regardless of who’s in power.

This is my feeling also, not wanting to give the US economy money; I was thinking of going to Florida for a winter break. Tourism is a major money-maker for Florida, but I don't want a bunch of Maga-loons profiting from me.

I'd say America has got worse since Trump has not been in power. Massive homelessness everywhere. San Francisco pretty much a no go area. Shops constantly looted. Venice beach now a mess. So I haven't been the last few years as it's gone downhill rapidly. Hopefully there will now be a change which is clearly what the Americans want too

Off topic, but why is San Francisco like this? My friend went recently and was horrified by the level of street homelessness and mental illness. Why is it like this? I have never been but it always looked like a fun and interesting city in the films….

Don't go then. They probably don't want lefty loons there anyway.

I think the democrat success stories like San Francisco need your tourist dollar more.

Enjoy.

The US is pretty overrated as a holiday destination anyway. Same size as Europe but with at best maybe 5-10% of the sights.

I can understand that. I feel the same about the UK, tbh. Rainy, expensive and too many whiners running around.

I do laugh though, a country the size of Europe but with less to see. We may be a "new country" compared to Europe but there are hundreds of places to see. I also think some of the world is just too ignorant to know that. 😆

Maybe, unreasonable, but feels very unsafe. Very unwelcoming, very divided.

Not a country I want to spend time in.

We have a holiday to the US booked next summer. Couldn’t afford to lose the flight money by cancelling, plus the kids are super excited, but also the country would still be divided if Harris had got in - all the Trump supporters will at least be placated for a few years now!

Oxforddictionary12 · 06/11/2024 10:45

Your feelings are valid OP. You might be okay as a tourist but god forbid don't get pregnant with complications out there though. I personally wouldn't want to visit a country where it's acceptable to have guns and Trump is president. How anyone can even dream to support him is beyond me- for the many multiple reasons people have listed above.

Yes, feel free to visit our country but try not to have sex. If you have sex, try not to stay more than a month so you can get home and take care of that ectopic pregnancy.

Or come visit, have sex, stay as long as you want and use birth control.....

LOL! These responses are so funny! What if the world avoided the UK because of Brexit. I mean, after all, you basically said you all were too good to be part of the "Union". Europeans should avoid the UK at all costs since the UK doesn't think Europeans are as good as UK residents.

The Brexit vote proved the above...right?

@StopPinsAndNeedles so you are an expert on a culture and ethnicity because of your ancestry? Maybe your ancestors are a bunch of assholes, you don't get to generalise about a culture you don't live in.

You know Donald Trumps Mum was Scottish right? He is half BRITISH. Is he a representative of British culture?

I truly hope not.

It's good news for women, now that we will have the definition and safeguarding back.

World war was on the cards regardless, it's bad news for Europe as Putin will push pass Ukraine.

Yeah, pity about the bodily autonomy eh? Or the boost for misogyny.

fear-mongering nonsense

latetonews · 06/11/2024 16:29

I assume you're happy to live in England and pay for a family who supports an (alleged) sex offender ?

If so, then you may as well go on holiday where a different sex offender holds just as much power. No need to pick your favourite

We were there during 2018 and 2019, it felt no different than any other time and we tend not to stick to the usual tourist spots but travel widely in the South West.

LorettyTen · 06/11/2024 16:37

That's ridiculous!

Givemethreerings · 06/11/2024 16:53

Assumptions are being made that you’ll have a choice in whether or not you visit the US.

Remember Trump’s ‘Muslim’ travel ban? The last time it affected 15 countries until
Biden lifted it in 2021.

If it’s reinstated, some people will simply not be allowed to go to the USA for a holiday, to visit their family, or any other reason.

A decision to travel to 🇺🇸 or not might not be in your hands.

laveritable · 06/11/2024 16:53

Same here! My adult kids are not interested too!

Half of the UK vote was against Brexit. The outcome certainly didn't represent the views of everyone. Similarly many Americans are not in favour of Trump and his administration.

Trump and other land owners made a lot of money out of development in San Francisco, over the years. With the arrival of the Technology giants made land very valuable. America doesn’t have legal protection for renters, as we have in the UK. It was easy to target the poor residential area, make people homeless and build luxury high rise developments. There were plenty of well paid tech execs to rent them.
Last time I was in SF, a few years go the homeless were very evident, more than I’d seen in any European country. However at no time did I feel unsafe, even walking through Tenderloin.. I understand it is far worse now.
