Given that Trump is elected.

It's the same place it was when you booked it, the people are the same people. Nothing is going to change for tourists. You're being a little dramatic.

Attelina · 06/11/2024 11:07

That's hilarious!

Berlinlover · 06/11/2024 11:08

Those of you saying you would not visit USA due to abortion laws, are you aware abortion was illegal here in Ireland until 2019? Would you have used that as an excuse not to visit Ireland?

It’s still illegal in Malta. People seem to overlook that when they are screaming about the USA.

Work trip tomorrow <bites nails>

Get a grip, seriously.

Feelingathomenow · 06/11/2024 11:27

Tbh neither party was good news for women. But a Republican win was probably best on a day to day basis, their misogyny is more focused rather than permeating the very fabric of women’s existence. People are being naive if they see the Democrats as some kind of saviours. Basically it was a choice between two dystopias, Brave New World v 1984. Neither appeals to me.

But wouldn’t stop me visiting a country, tourists are unlikely to be affected by any policies (potentially might be slower/more costly to get in)

People flock to Dubai yet that is a country where many tourists are affected by their rules. Would you go there OP, or Thailand?

USA is expensive, and yes, now I do consider it more dangerous so just not worth it. I've been twice so that was nice, but no way would I ever go there again, and would definitely discourage DDs, but that's unlikely as they feel the same as me.

To be fair my experiences the last time I went to the States have made me think very hard about visiting again even before this. I had to travel to Florida to sort stuff out after a family member died. The 'throw away' culture made me realise how far we've come in the UK. Not that we're perfect, but that trip definitely showed me that we've changed a lot. People still using disposable cups, not made the switch to reusable bottles/coffee cups/shopping bags, polystyrene trays and glasses for beers on the beach being totally the preferred way, overflowing bins of lightweight trash blowing straight into the oceans, plastic cutlery in restaurants, fast food outlets and even peoples homes, driving absolutely everywhere (we visited a retail centre and wanted to walk from one store to the other across the carpark but were told categorically by our hosts that it wasn't safe so we'd all drive over.)

I did just google Disneyland in Tokyo as I wanted to visit anyway but might be a better option than Orlando

You'll be fine in Orlando, nothing is going to change at Disney as a result of the election.

Galatine · 06/11/2024 11:28

Trump was President in 2019 when I went and we survived. I think that you are being rather over dramatic.

Yes and no. I would have been aware that I could get home from Ireland very easily and quickly compared to the states. But I was put off after the case of Savita, who died from sepsis.

The only difference is that Micky Mouse won't be there now he's President!

I stayed at a hotel in New York where every hotel room had a drinking water dispenser and reusable bottles. I’ve never had that in any other country that I’ve stayed in.

Oo no me either!! Definitely a great example of how much it can vary by State.

The difference is that Ireland has progressed over the past few years. The US is regressing, massively. I’m not going to fund that regression with my tourist dollars.

PauliesWalnuts · 06/11/2024 10:29

I know there are very few governments that are perfect, but I have a baseline of acceptable behaviour from a humanitarian point of view, e.g. women, racism, death penalty, dictatorship so I do make a point of avoiding those countries. I know my tourist pennies won't count for much but it does help me sleep at night.

My thoughts exactly.

Yanbu at all. I wouldn't be setting foot in a country that had just elected a leader with fascist tendencies.

Lucky them

Why on earth not?

Does this only applies to “tourist pennies” or do you refuse to buy Chinese goods because of their government? Do you own a mobile phone that has Israeli made chips in it? Or is it just easy to score points online by railing against Trump?

At least America is a democracy.

Oh get a grip and go on your holiday. Or cancel it and go to Benidorm. Whatever.

I'd take the US over Benidorm any day 😆

The UK makes a teeny dent in such global waste. It's why the crying vegans annoy so many here, we aren't the problem.

Maybe, unreasonable, but feels very unsafe. Very unwelcoming, very divided.

Not a country I want to spend time in.

Don't go then. It's up to you.

StopPinsAndNeedles · 06/11/2024 12:20

It's so progressive, don't you know now, in Ireland, this is the Irish loving on women.
