To be so disappointed in people - Trump voters especially

1000 replies

notsorighteousthesedays · 06/11/2024 06:43

I feel absolutely stunned that despite all that has been said and done Trump is likely to get the chance to make the world burn a little faster.

I am afraid for a future so full of anger and hate.

Agree, I will never take my family to America for a holiday. We do take things for granted in this country we have so good compared to other countries.

Sounds like you’ve never been to America or have American friends. Most Americans live a peaceful and harmonious life in a beautiful country. It’s not all LA, NY and Chicago.

@thepariscrimefiles I am not sure that split is true for this election though? Quite a lot has happened in the last 4 years. It appeared to be those with knowledge of geopolitics who were switching sides, I thought. Do you have any sources for what you say, ie in relation to 2024 election specifically?

From this election:

https://edition.cnn.com/interactive/2024/politics/2020-2016-exit-polls-2024-dg/

White voters without college degrees have long represented Trump’s base of support, something that has remained constant. A shift has occurred among White college-educated voters. They narrowly backed Trump in 2016, but Harris won them by about 10 points in 2024, a split driven by both men and women. Harris won White women with a college degree by about 20 points — an improvement over both Biden and Clinton.

Anatomy of three Trump elections: How Americans voted in 2024 vs. 2020 and 2016

CNN's exit poll results reveal a divided country.

Young women will be less likely to be raped and murdered under a Trump administration, given that criminals (most who already have long rap sheets before they commit greater crimes) will be more likely to be locked up and kept in prison.

With regards to abortion... It blows my mind that you lot are so obsessed with killing babies. You need help. An American woman can go to a blue state and kill her baby there, there is no need to act like she has no access to abortion at all. Perhaps don't have unprotected sex if you don't want to get pregnant, or consider getting a temporary IUD if you are at the time of the month where the emergency contraceptive pill will likely be ineffective. Left-wing women have no concept of personal responsibility.

Some of you people (“people”?) are really over-egging the custard today!

Hi, can you outline how his win will socially and economically benefit American citizens? Surely that is the essence of democracy, the greatest gain for the greatest number.

But you have missed out so many other types of gains. Democracy is everyone having a voice. They only need to vote in a way which aligns with their priories.

Manxexile · 06/11/2024 12:38

@Coolasfeck

"... Any Trump voter who’s not a straight, white, Christian man deserves what’s coming..."

You probably won't like this, but that sounds rather racist and mysoginist to me.

So any non-straight, non-white, non-Christian woman who voted for DT deserves retribution? They aren't allowed to make up their own minds how to vote, but have to vote how you think they should - otherwise they deserve what they get?

You sound incredibly patronising, mean-spirited and anti-democratic to me.

I can imagine the Ukrainians are happy too. Their government was ready to sign a peace deal with Russia in April 2022. Boris Johnson flew to Ukraine to personally torpedo that peace deal. With Trump in power, perhaps the Ukrainians will have some more autonomy in negotiations with Russia

On what planet were they going to sign a peace deal in April 2022?

The planet where Turkey was mediating. I think it was March not April though.

Lentilweaver · 06/11/2024 12:39

I don't believe Kamala lost entirely because she was a woman. But I also don't believe there will be any female candidates for President any time soon.

UnRavellingFast · 06/11/2024 12:39

I don’t understand how they can be this stupid. The only thing for the rest of the world, in the face of this persistent destructive Trumpism is to start turning away from our closeness with the US, our reliance on the dollar economy, and band together with sensible nations for growth and defence.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/11/2024 12:41

Those denying the US is mysoginistic- well it's a very big place- the areas I like most don't tend to be - other areas I've experienced are very much so - and many women do go along with it because financially a lot of them are screwed with no support if they don't have a bloke bringing home the bacon. The same applies too here but support is better- not great but better than US, certainly if you have kids

Personally I thought both choices were lousy but it's a very dog eat dog country where making a buck is king and people want to believe that a change of government will miraculously change their circumstances- I really don't get why women though in particular would vote for him -

Maddy70 · 06/11/2024 12:42

SpunkyKoala · 06/11/2024 06:49

Well there was always a 50/50 chance trump would win from the outset and a white male v black female in a nation that is still widely and openly racist sexist and misogynistic in large swathes of the country it’s was always odds on for the white male - the US is a completely different beast to the UK there’s little in the way of ‘moderate views’ and they are fervent in their core beliefs.

This. I thought she was a great candidate along with a great running mate. Its terribly sad

This is the important point.

The US can vote for who it likes. We don't get a say in this. If we don't like that, our option is to distance ourselves from them and our dependency on their resources.

HecatesBees · 06/11/2024 11:53

Your views are anti women and have no place in the modern world

The 'modern world' as you envision it has failed to propagate life and prosperity. Your views are anti-LIFE .

Ironically, given what you profess to value, the policies you no doubt support have led to a world where women are raped and murdered daily.

Manxexile · 06/11/2024 12:45

Backwoods57 · 06/11/2024 07:02

Brit in the US:

Over the past 10 years the liberal's have shut down friendly political debate. If you are not a Democrat you are automatically shot down as being a Nazi supporter. This obviously has upset a majority. However they have just kept quiet and nodded along to maintain friendships, saving their true views for the privacy of the voting booth.

You cannot win thoughts and minds by shouting them down and demonizing them.

This ^

I suggest that any "liberals" who find it difficult to grasp that not everybody thinks like them should read Jonathan Haidt's book: "The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion"

It's not the right who are intolerant of the views of others...

That is interesting, though it is based on polls and CNN hasn't covered itself with glory when it comes to impartial reporting. Thanks for linking.

It’s hard to fit a cigarette paper between the views of so called gender critical self-styled “feminists” and those of the hard and far right. It’s an uncomfortable truth that usually gets brushed under the carpet.

so called gender critical self-styled “feminists”

This sounds like you prefer gender ideology over sex based spaces? Do you mean you are happy with men in women's sports?

Shakeoffyourchains · 06/11/2024 12:48

JRSKSSBH · 06/11/2024 09:07

Your post is amusing since it absolutely highlights the issue with left wingers. You make no attempt to address the substantive issues raised about why US voters are unhappy instead you use extreme language. Then you launch into a self-congratulatory rant about how virtuous the left is wanting world peace and an end to world hunger as though simply by dint of wanting good things your argument is obviously right. I am guessing you are comfortably off and many issues to do with wages, housing, availability of services, etc are not ones that directly affect you.

I'm comfortable now, but acutely aware of the issues deprivation and poverty cause, having grown up in one of the most deprived areas of the UK. My former school had (and still has) two full-time police officers stationed on-site to deal with everything from extreme neglect and sexual assault to drug abuse and parents physically attacking children within the school grounds.

I've lost friends to violence, drugs and prison and only escaped from a similar life due to a huge amount of luck and the hard work of my parents.

I don't want to pull the ladder up behind me now I'm out. I want things to improve for everyone, and even changed career to try to make that a reality, but if the people who are deprived continue to direct their anger towards the left, the migrant, the different, instead of at those who hold the power to enact change but who refuse to do so, they never will.

You've perfectly illustrated the issue with many right wingers; you refuse to listen to any view but your own. Tell me, if Trump is successful in his mass deportation of migrants and life doesn't improve substantially for the working class, who will you blame next?

This. I thought she was a great candidate along with a great running mate. Its terribly sad

She is an able intelligent woman who has said very little other than "The passage of time, you know? Right? The passage of time" over the last 4 years.

That is why there were videos mocking her basically saying she was a puppet and completely controlled by monied groups. Passage of Time being an euphemism.

I am not asserting that myself though, I have no head for geopolitics.

Sleepydoor · 06/11/2024 12:50

The first time Trump was in office, Chris Christie and others ensured he was surrounded by competent and decent advisors, many of whom later tried to warn the American public prior to this election that he was incompetent and dangerous. If not for Pence and others upholding the Constitution, Trump may have held onto power by force. Now he has surrounded himself with conspiracy theorists and sycophants so the guardrails are truly off. Good luck when RFK jr gets rid of childhood vaccines and flouride, good luck when Trump refuses to support the US's historical allies in favour of Putin, good luck when Elon Musk is trimming 2 trillion out of the budget as part of his DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) and good luck when Trump tries to round up and deport immigrants, including by his own team's admission, legal immigrants and people born in the US. Good fucking luck. But no, people were so concerned about the economy and inflation -- which affected other countries since Covid pretty much the same.
