To be so disappointed in people - Trump voters especially

notsorighteousthesedays · 06/11/2024 06:43

I feel absolutely stunned that despite all that has been said and done Trump is likely to get the chance to make the world burn a little faster.

I am afraid for a future so full of anger and hate.

If, as now seems likely, That Man gets in, we have to live with it (well, residents of the US have to live with it, rest of us see the international angles; and it's a bad day for the climate)

But starting by sowing further division, by condemning the majority (of those who turned up to vote) isn't going to help.

Brit in the US:

Over the past 10 years the liberal's have shut down friendly political debate. If you are not a Democrat you are automatically shot down as being a Nazi supporter. This obviously has upset a majority. However they have just kept quiet and nodded along to maintain friendships, saving their true views for the privacy of the voting booth.

You cannot win thoughts and minds by shouting them down and demonizing them.

Spot on - I'm hardly ever surprised at election outcomes anymore.

Democrats need to field better candidates.

And stop insulting the electorate

This is 2016 all over again - they just refused to listen to what people were telling them.

Honestly, this.

Now we have 4 more years of the orange baboon on our screens spouting bollocks.

SpudleyLass · 06/11/2024 07:17

CurlewKate · 06/11/2024 07:10

@SpudleyLass "Democrats need to field better candidates."

Because Trump was positively stellar.....

The point is Trump wasn't going to win against a strong Democrat supporter.

Where have the Dems been for the past 8 years? They're not meant to be passive. They focused too much energy on dragging down Trump, its like they forgot they were supposed to campaign on their own merits too.

Coolasfeck · 06/11/2024 07:17

I think because most of us watch Hollywood movies we see America as a socially liberal nation. However, it’s deeply deeply paternalistic.

How is it in 2024 they still have never had a female leader and many women would rather vote for a rapist and to probably get pardons for rapists and ban abortion than have a female President. It’s absolutely bonkers.

The manosphere will be going into overdrive.

People will blame Harris but deep down they know it’s because they couldn’t handle a female ‘in charge’.

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 06/11/2024 07:18

I’m delighted. 😀

aquashiv · 06/11/2024 07:19

The voting majority are women. I am not surprised he got in. He's an anti politician and extremely gifted at spreading propaganda

I have relatives in the US, some of which are female professionals - who voted for trump both times. It's better for their wallets and that's why. It's better economically, even for women.

That's what they say anyway. Trump is good for business.

Willyoujustbequiet · 06/11/2024 07:20

I'm disappointed in the American people. I genuinely thought they were more moral than this.

How a woman could ever vote for him is beyond me. Turkeys voting for Christmas.

MargotwithaT · 06/11/2024 07:20

The left (I can’t believe I have to say this but this is mumsnet- Labour in the UK and Democrats in the US) have ignored working people for too long. Biden and Obama haven’t delivered for them and as bewildering as it seems people will turn to snake oil salesman who promise them the world.

Thatsenoughcoffee · 06/11/2024 07:20

OP thinks voters are garbage.

Coolasfeck · 06/11/2024 07:03

Well it looks like many Americans are keen to give their country to Elon Musk and the tech bros. Trump will not live out the term and Vance (Peter Theil) will take over. Regulations bonfire will begin.

Any Trump voter who’s not a straight, white, Christian man deserves what’s coming.

The people of Ukraine and countries surrounding Russia must also know it will be a few months before Trump hands Ukraine over to Putin.

The only positive thing is that this may mean the end to America’s malign influence on the rest of the world as we all attempt to block out the crazy.

Agreed. I think a lot of younger people also took issue with the government's stance on Gaza. May we live in interesting times.

Kamala stood for absolutely nothing. It’s an arrogance to think anyone is entitled to votes just because.

It’s nothing to do with her being a woman, it’s because she is absolutely useless.

MargotwithaT · 06/11/2024 07:21

If there is one phrase I hate it’s ’turkeys voting for Christmas.’ It’s such a trite fucking thing to say and only ever results in a backlash.

Thatsenoughcoffee · 06/11/2024 07:22

Brilliant article here for anyone unsure why Trump got in:

Ytcsghisn · 06/11/2024 07:22

Awwww, how sweet. You’re disappointed. Why don’t you lecture them about woke virtues and climate change. Then tell them how stupid they are for voting for Trump. That’ll teach ‘em.

It’s this kind of ‘oh aren’t they stupid and aren’t we the enlightened ones’ attitude that makes people actively vote for Trump.

The Democrats don't even know what a woman is. So many women obviously decided not to put their trust in them. Do you not get it?

Come on. So the Republicans can put a convicted, weird, racist, rapist in charge, who talks nonsense and somehow its the Democrats fault?!

SpudleyLass · 06/11/2024 07:05

"Any Trump voter who is not a straight white Christian man, deserves what's coming to them".

Shocking comment and underlines the point entirely. This attitude is why the left continue to lose support.

Indeed. Quite clear where the hate is coming from.

ChefsKisser · 06/11/2024 07:04

It’s awful. I was saying to DH I often feel like the US is v familiar because we watch so much American TV, music etc and feels similar to the UK but moments like this make you realise how starkly different it is. They’ve voted for selfishness and it’s embarrassing

Edited

I don’t think it is much different at all. If we had a unified right of centre option in a similar vein to Trump at the next GE they too would win a landslide.

Think unified Conservative/Reform with Farage as leader. I don’t think that’s at all likely but it would lead to Labour being totally wiped out and you’d probably see that as being broadly similar to the US situation.

Riapia · 06/11/2024 07:23

I was surprised when Trump won in 2016. Well, now he’s done it again.
Never underestimate the stupidity of so many people.
