Felt a bit upset and annoyed today. Started a new job yesterday. Another person started at the same time. We were completing online training this afternoon and she saw my surname on the screen. She said 'how do you pronounce that?!?' with a derogatory tone. I told her. Now my name is not awful pronounced correctly but if pronounced incorrectly could be mistaken for a rude word for a man's private parts! After I told her the correct pronunciation she said 'oh I bet loads of people pronounce it the wrong way ha ha' and laughed. Now bear in mind I'd never met this woman before yesterday morning and she has already given off an air of superiority to the others in the team 'oh I could never drink instant' for example so not warming to her. I just laughed it off (name thing) but felt really down after. Don't want to put up with aholes like this in the workplace! Would u just ignore and try to stay away or say anything to line manager??

Mrs Baulsac?

Gummybear23 · 05/11/2024 19:48

We had someone called Bullock

And people thought it was hilarious to say bollocks.

That always reminds me of The two Ronnies, Four Candles!

Is it bullock?

I know someone who started with the surname Willey and married a Kuntz. Disappointed they didn't double barrel tbh.

The best double-barrell would be if William Shatner married Stevie Nicks.

Beautiful!

Daisy12Maisie · 05/11/2024 19:58

I think if you tell someone once then they should say it right after that.
For example someone on a course at work said to everyone else on the course "my name is Tola, it rhymes with scholar." No one said his name wrong or forgot it because he has made it easy for us. My name is a simple, plain, boring name but people still call me the wrong name sometimes. I think if someone is repeatedly saying your name wrong or in a rude way and it bothers you then that is out of order. One comment is not a big deal in my opinion.

twentysevendresses · 05/11/2024 20:14

I have two (unrelated) friends with the surname Dix (pronounced sort of 'dees') but you can imagine how it gets said 9/10 times 😂

Let it go OP...you are being a little over sensitive, even though your colleague sounds like a bit of a twat 🤷‍♀️

WhimsicalGubbins76 · 05/11/2024 20:21

In the kindest possible way op, you are doing a sterling job of making a mountain out of molehill, and imagining things that just aren’t there.
Is this your first time in a working environment? Or just anywhere around people? Because you’re in for a lot of harsh lessons if this offends you 🤣

MadinMarch · 05/11/2024 20:22

Mrsprofessor83 · 05/11/2024 17:15

My guess is Wiley or Dique 😋

Or Koch?

JustBec · 05/11/2024 20:22

I probably wouldn’t bring it up, because it’s early days and I’d want a smooth start. That said, I think our names are a part of our identity and it’s important to make an effort to pronounce them properly and be respectful about it. So I don’t think you’re over sensitive or wrong for being upset.

I don’t like instant coffee and have a very dry sense of humour.

We probably wouldn’t make great friends OP…

I love instant coffee and I have a completely inappropriate sense of humour. We probably wouldn’t get on either 🤣

Jessie1259 · 05/11/2024 20:44

She sounds like a right Behlend OP! I think she'll piss everyone off fairly quickly. Either that or everyone will think she's amazing and you'll find you've started the job from hell.

Moveoverdarlin · 05/11/2024 18:15

Grow the fuck up? She said ‘I bet lots of people pronounce it the wrong way’. What is wrong with that??? She didn’t call her the incorrect name. She did the right thing by asking OP how to pronounce it.

The colleague has done nothing wrong.

Edited

She should have asked how to pronounce it and then said fuck all that would have been the right thing

Lifeomars · 05/11/2024 21:05

I would suggest keeping your eyes and ears open and your mouth closed. It is a new job, and it takes a good while to get used to, to see where the land lies, and to understand the team dynamics . She might just not be very socially skilled so at this early stage smile sweetly and focus on your new role. If this starts to look like a pattern further down the road, that is another matter. I have had jobs where the nicest seeming person turned out to be an utter vindictive horror, someone who was always looking for new victims. ConverselyI worked with someone who initially seemed very brusque and a bit intimidating who later went on to become a very good friend. As I said, give it time

What? No she isn't. Where the hell do you people work?

In a professional role, mocking people's names is unacceptable.

OP like others I suggest keeping quiet for now but taking note and keeping an eye on her. If you work in a professional environment she'll show herself up soon enough. If she fits right in it's a bad sign about the workplace!

Aaah, you’re that person in the office. Well I’m glad I don’t work with you 🤣

MaroonyBalloony · 06/11/2024 06:09

Everybody is that person in my office, I work with intelligent adults.

........
I quite agree. It's just not done - unless you are a kid.

Hmm1234 · 06/11/2024 18:07

People saying get over it really don’t get there might be some micro aggression, prejudice connotations in the colleagues attitude. Suppose it’s an ‘ethnic’ name that would be extremely rude of her. Just tell her straight ‘I’d appreciate if you pronounced my name correctly’ ‘it means something in…’

TulipinUK · 06/11/2024 18:25

My surname gets all sort of pronounciations of which one is very funny and people do laugh. It’s nothing personal. I don’t get worked up about it.

G5000 · 06/11/2024 18:30

Just tell her straight ‘I’d appreciate if you pronounced my name correctly

But the colleague asked how to pronounce it, so she could do exactly that..
I really don't understand why people are coming up with all the stories how she was mocking it or how she kept mispronouncing it, even OP didn't claim she did it.

skyscrapersinging · 06/11/2024 18:45

Ignore them. I’m with you. It’s a massive micro aggression red flag.

I mispronounced Cockburn once .. apparently pronounced Coburn .. not the way I said it, that made it sound like a horrible disease.

Is it bollocks. That's got bucket/bouquet written all over it 😂😂😂

August1980 · 06/11/2024 19:17

God grief! You sound like hard work. Day two and already looking to complain… grow up and let it go!
