Another fatal dog attack

So saddened by the news a 10 year old girl has been killed by what sounds to be an XL Bully.

I'm shocked that any family would keep one after so many attacks. There are worse things than kindly being PTS.

It seems like the same line every time "loving family dog, never done anything like this".

How many do there have to be before people realise any XL Bully has it in them. It's not their fault, they're not bad dogs, it's just genetic the same way a dachshund barks or a spaniel's tail wags the dog.

There is a poster on mumsnet on one of the dog threads who has put on her XL bully is soft and would never hurt a fly!!! She quite rightly has had her arse handed to her.

I think it’s obviously the ban has not worked and lots of owners refuse to believe the risk till it is late. They all need culling.

I don’t judge people as a whole but honestly think owners of these dogs are complexly and utter thickos. Otherwise why would you have one

Anotherparkingthread · 04/11/2024 00:51

I disagree in culling people's pets. That behvaiour is shameful, we bred them, we made them, and in the UK we have always regarded our companion animals as part of the family.

I do however think that their should be a ban on breeding further generations if certain breeds of dog. There is no need to make more, but better to let the dogs that exist live our their lives.

And how many dead children are acceptable to you whilst the dogs look very out their life?

StrongFemaleCharacter · 04/11/2024 00:56

I can't remember where I read it but all XL Bullies in the UK are bred from the same dog who has been interbred and is aggressive. This means they all are and can turn on a penny. Everyone that owns one of these dogs has one with the potential to kill.

I hate the idea of culling any animal.

But when they've shown to be so dangerous to children, I have to reconsider.

Children can't make the choice themselves to be around/not around one, and if their parents can't make a choice that protects their child's life, perhaps it does need to be taken for them.

In any other scenario a child was being put at such serious risk it would be reasonable to report to social services, but this is a blind spot.

All XL bullies should be culled. No exceptions, no muzzles and no compensation to owners.

ToriMJ · 04/11/2024 01:01

Recently acquired too.
I cannot fathom it. What the fuck are people thinking inviting these dogs into their homes, especially if they have children there.
I think exposure to dangerous dog breeds should be grounds for child neglect.

I read the "recently acquired' too. I thought that since the ban came in, it was illegal to pass these dogs on/rehome them. There's a quote saying it was running about unmuzzled too.

dogfail · 04/11/2024 05:26

The whole dog owning situation needs an overhaul. You should have to apply for a license and breeders should be registered to breed and be checked regularly.!

Justleaveitblankthen · 04/11/2024 05:57

From what I see, people keep them for the Kudos and attention they get out on the street.
They walk 200 yards and everyone stops to chat and 'sympathise' with the muzzle law.. and pet them... and show how cool they are to the Owner.
It's pathetic. 🤨

Absolutely. It’s not cruel. The dog doesn’t know any difference. I’m

Poor child. What an indescribably awful way to die.

It's the breeding that is shameful not the culling

Ginmonkeyagain · 04/11/2024 06:29

I grew up with working dogs and have many (unpopular) opinions on dog ownership. One of those is people with young children need to consider getting a dog - any dog - very carefully, generally as the two do not mix well.

Oh and agreed XL bullies need to be banned and removed.

Well the owners were clearly breaking the law then and hopefully will be facing some kind of sentence? You’d hope, anyway.

If you have an XL bully and it hurts someone it is not a tragic accident it is very much your fault.

Fififafa · 04/11/2024 06:48

The parents of that poor girl need to be prosecuted for child neglect. Also acquiring an XL bully after the ban is illegal so hope they get prosecuted for that too and made an example of.

There is a ban on breeding further generations. Part of the ban should mean that they are all neutered and cannot breed.

This, however, is the same is it was for pitbulls all those years ago, and there are more of those in the UK than there were when the ban was introduced. So banning them is clearly not effective.

ILikeItWhatIsIt · 04/11/2024 06:54

I personally think the first time a dog bites should be the last time. And I mean any dog, not just the dangerous breeds. Honestly makes me sick to hear people defending them. They sound like abused women defending the husbands that hit them.

HagsRule · 04/11/2024 06:57

How absolutely awful; that poor child.

I'm terrified of those dogs. There's one near us, the owner walks it without a proper muzzle (just a bit of thin rope over it's mouth which would not prevent an attack whatsoever) and when I see her out walking it she really struggles to keep it under control.

All dogs bark it just dachshunds. I'm fed up with the generalisation that all dachshund are barky. They're not!

Poor, poor child, so very sorry.

upat4am · 04/11/2024 07:05

@Bixterret they do, but I have two particularly barky dachshunds so it was front of mind for a breed trait

All young dachshunds I know are barking shiteheads, in fairness. And I used to have one.
