Another fatal dog attack

upat4am · 04/11/2024 00:41

So saddened by the news a 10 year old girl has been killed by what sounds to be an XL Bully.

I'm shocked that any family would keep one after so many attacks. There are worse things than kindly being PTS.

It seems like the same line every time "loving family dog, never done anything like this".

How many do there have to be before people realise any XL Bully has it in them. It's not their fault, they're not bad dogs, it's just genetic the same way a dachshund barks or a spaniel's tail wags the dog.

Also, if you want a cuddly dog, get a bloody Labrador or a Retriever. The soppiest dogs I know are greyhounds.

Suzuki70 · 04/11/2024 08:33

Just echoing that I can't think of a much dumber decision than getting a massive dangerous dog to live with a child in a static caravan.

Their accommodation is irrelevant.

kirinm · 04/11/2024 08:39

There are loads of these dogs still around and most of the stupid owners don't care that they aren't muzzled. They are terrifying looking animals and it is so tedious to hear the 'no such thing as a bad dog' rubbish. There are dogs who are generically more aggressive than others and if one of these decides it wants to hurt you, it's so bloody big it can.

SweetBobby · 04/11/2024 08:37

Is it? Funny that this happens at the end of half term when the dog's been cooped up in a small space with the child for a week - seemingly for the first time if it's "newly acquired".

ToriMJ · 04/11/2024 08:40

Their accommodation isn't irrelevant.
It's a massive, dangerous dog in an incredibly small space with a child. There's. No safe place, no way of giving the dog and the child space away from each other, and a dog who can't move around freely.
That will certainly increase the chances of frustration and exposure.

FlamboyantFish · 04/11/2024 08:40

If you have kids and own one of these dogs, you are a terrible parent.

Edited

A static caravan is no smaller than a flat, and they clearly had a large outdoor space. This is about the dog and it's owners, not their home.

KoalaCalledKevin · 04/11/2024 08:42

Their accommodation is irrelevant.

I disagree. A very enclosed area, almost certainly without space for the dog to be properly separated from the child. And potentially (not sure in this case), no secure outside space for the dog either.
Regardless of breed, a large dog in a small space isn't great for the dog.

LuluBug24 · 04/11/2024 08:36

@Viviennemary do you think so? Honestly just asking. I’ll need to get a picture of it as proof. Will try get one this morning.

Yes I think so. At least you will have done something. You are obviously worried it isnt safe and so are a lot of other folk by the sound of it. Please report it.

AhBiscuits · 04/11/2024 08:44

They illegally acquired a banned dog and it killed a child. Anything other than a manslaughter charge is an injustice.

kirinm · 04/11/2024 08:45

@yarnbarn if it had been someone else's daughter would their guilt have been enough punishment? Why should it be any different for allowing one of that hideous dogs to attack their 10 year old?

There is a mother at my little girl’s school that brings her XL bully on the school run. It wears this flimsy leather muzzle and she loosely ties it to the front gate where hundreds of children walk in and out of the school. So many children are visibly scared of it. Including my own daughter. It looks absolutely terrifying, never seen such a large head! I swear it’s powerful enough to snap the skinny material lead used to tie it. And the muzzle looks so unsafe, half arsed. Every time I look at it I imagine all the people who have been killed by them. I don’t know the ins and outs of the laws but it doesn’t feel right that it’s just sitting there every morning and every afternoon with hundreds of children around it. I can’t believe another life has been lost 💔

I'd call the police as well. The law is that the dog needs to be on a lead in public, and that the lead needs to be held securely by someone over the age of 16.

I don't think leaving them tied up in the street is allowed. It's not under your control.

Edenmum2 · 04/11/2024 08:48

My cousin has one (all paperwork correct etc) and he and his partner are having a baby next year. I am genuinely terrified for them.

LuluBug24 · 04/11/2024 08:49

@KoalaCalledKevin thank you for the info! So they can’t be left unattended like she leaves it?

KoalaCalledKevin · 04/11/2024 08:49

A small flat. And I think having an XL bully in a flat is also stupid.

A man has been attacked by 1 in the North East overnight. People are sharing a video of it - he's been lucky to survive by the sound of it.

My neighbour has one. I sometimes hear her shouting at it through the wall. I'm terrified it will attack her or escape and attack ds or us 😪

That poor dog. Imagine being shouted at like that. Absolutely no need. If she treats it like that she’ll end up being attacked by it.

I have a large dog who is really strong and fast. I am really scared of XL bullies.

Yes, thank you.

I don't care if times are hard and there's a cost of living crisis. If you have a small home you shouldn't buy a big dog.

sunbum · 04/11/2024 09:02

The 23y old woman in Ireland who had her arm ripped off by her own bull breed dogs (at least one was an xl bulky, the other 2 were mixed but also restrcited) and then killed lived in a large, multi storey house in large grounds. Didn't make a difference https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/articles/c3gg6zql03eo.amp

No one should have these and other similar bull breed dogs or cane corsos as pets, never mind in cramped conditions with a child. Why would anyone have a pet that is capable of killing adult humans, and regularly do. Just unfathomable how peiple can be so stupid.

That's awful. I see so many in the NE.

I saw a very obvious xl being walked by a man across an Asda car park with kids in tow. It was straining at the lead and unmuzzled. I wanted to report but wasn't sure how to. I'm assuming 101?

The point is these parents and owners of that dangerous animal did not accept the fact that it was a potential killer. Otherwise it would not have been their family pet. They were in denial like the folk on this thread. These animals are potential killers. They should all be humanely put down. No ifs or buts.

The point is these parents and owners of that dangerous animal did not accept the fact that it was a potential killer

I believe this is the crux of the problem.

Intellectually stunted people refusing to revise their own beliefs until they have obtained first-hand evidence to the contrary.

This is an interview with the owner of different dogs who went on to kill someone: https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/25740032/rapper-xl-bullies-breed-wiped-out-killed-gran/

That owner had 2 XL adults and 6 of their puppies living with his 12 year old son, up until the 2 adults killed his mother in law. He chose not to heed the warnings because he had not personally witnessed any violence.

Thistimearound · 04/11/2024 06:32

Well the owners were clearly breaking the law then and hopefully will be facing some kind of sentence? You’d hope, anyway.

If you have an XL bully and it hurts someone it is not a tragic accident it is very much your fault.

I presume the owners are her parents?

I think they've already started serving their sentence? What do you think could be worse than their child dying?

I cannot believe the dog was recently acquired by parents, knowing what we do, but if it was a dog they knew (owned by grandparents maybe?) it's slightly more understandable.

i don't think they should all be killed, that's a slippery slope. What next, German shepards? Jack Russels, your cat?

A static caravan is considerably smaller than a flat.
But people really shouldn't have large dogs in flats either .

Well if they start breading German shepards, Jack Russell and cats to look and act like they're on steroids maybe

I'd assume 101 as well, but I wouldn't hold out hope for anything happening. I mean, realistically it's an unidentified man who wouldn't still be there even if the police came immediately.

Attelina · 04/11/2024 09:16

'The family, who have not been named, live in a static caravan in a compound '

I'd hazard a guess and say that it wasn't a family pet as the family are making out, but bought as a guest dog or at least to look fierce and 'hard' to any unwanted visitors.
