Another fatal dog attack

So saddened by the news a 10 year old girl has been killed by what sounds to be an XL Bully.

I'm shocked that any family would keep one after so many attacks. There are worse things than kindly being PTS.

It seems like the same line every time "loving family dog, never done anything like this".

How many do there have to be before people realise any XL Bully has it in them. It's not their fault, they're not bad dogs, it's just genetic the same way a dachshund barks or a spaniel's tail wags the dog.

You can't protect children from everything in society but unfortunately some children have idiot parents . Ultimately it's the parents killing these children through their poor decision making . Who in their right mind mixes an XL Bully with children in the home . Especially if you live in a static caravan not known for the spaciousness where you're all on top of each other .

BabyCloud · 04/11/2024 07:37

How anyone can read the news and keep a dog like that is beyond me but I think most will say their dog would never turn on them.

TheGreatestAtuin · 04/11/2024 07:39

Horrific. How many deaths will it take?

There are a couple that live around here. They are MASSIVE but so far I have only seen them from a moving vehicle, not encountered them on foot. One is always properly muzzled when I see it, thankfully (walking along beside a toddler in a pram). The other just has an anti-pull lead on (the type that goes around the nose). I should report it I suppose but I am not sure how/who to and I don't know the owner.

I was in another local town recently and there was a couple with an XL Bully. Again thankfully muzzled. However it was absolutely out of control. We watched as it lunged as passers by, tried to barge into a shop, and then got it's lead wrapped around a bollard. The ineffectual human being (I use that term loosely) at the other end of the lead obviously had no control of the dog and it had clearly not been trained in any way. An accident waiting to happen. At least it was muzzled in public but what about in the home?

I love dogs (I have two hounds), but I would happily see all XL Bullies PTS. Other dangerous breeds too TBH as, unfortunately, even if all the XL bullies did disappear they would just be replaced by another dangerous status dog. And it's the low life scum who want a "status dog" who are very very unlikely to put in the time and effort required to train and mentally stimulate these types of dog to the level required. Unfortunately these strong, powerful, intelligent dogs are just not suitable for the majority of the general population to own safely, and especially not the low lives who seem to gravitate to them.

Lots of dogs are owned by people who probably shouldn't have them IMO (not socialized, not adequately exercised, left along too long, etc). But the issue with XL bullies and the like is how incredibly dangerous they are if they do snap and attack.

There is a growing list of deaths at the jaws of these vile bred to attack monsters

Indeed, and action should have been taken after one death. If you think of how that girl will have suffered in her last moments, someone somewhere deems that acceptable.

Edited

The Dog lobby is extremely powerful and the presumption in the UK is often to allow something and then, if necessary, ban it.

The recent law on these XLs was never ever going to work, a shit piece of legislation, most dog attacks happen in the family and the law didn't change anything about control within the house.

Hence as you say, we have horrific deaths of adults and children.

Its madness these dogs are still allowed to live in the home, the breed and others like them, need to be illegal to own and PTS.

NorthernGirlie · 04/11/2024 07:40

A man has been attacked by 1 in the North East overnight. People are sharing a video of it - he's been lucky to survive by the sound of it.

My neighbour has one. I sometimes hear her shouting at it through the wall. I'm terrified it will attack her or escape and attack ds or us 😪

SweetBobby · 04/11/2024 07:42

It's a disgrace. The parents should be prosecuted for manslaughter. No different to leaving a loaded gun around a child.

Livelovebehappy · 04/11/2024 07:42

Ginmonkeyagain · 04/11/2024 06:29

I grew up with working dogs and have many (unpopular) opinions on dog ownership. One of those is people with young children need to consider getting a dog - any dog - very carefully, generally as the two do not mix well.

Oh and agreed XL bullies need to be banned and removed.

I wondered how long the post would turn into ‘XLs should not exist with children’ to ‘all dogs should not exist with children’. Many dog breeds are absolutely fine in family situations. Most dog owners have the intelligence and common sense to know this, and do their research. It’s just like saying ‘some men are child molesters’ so let’s ban all men from living with children. You can’t judge all dogs based on the acts of one breed. I absolutely agree though that XLs have no place with anyone, adults or children.

Laalaalaand · 04/11/2024 07:43

Time to destroy the bloody lot. Vile creatures and i love most dogs. I really can't see why anyone would want one. They serve no legitimate purpose. Now stupid people are breeding smaller "pocket bullies". How long till they start attacking people? Are they already attacking people?

There is no such thing as a well bred xl bully. They have been selectively bred to create monsters that are as big and muscled as possible and it's children and old people that bear the brunt when these animals lose their stupid tiny minds. It's like having a fucking tiger or something in a caravan with children - it never seems to be the idiot who decided to bring that thing around the child that gets attacked.

Pashazade · 04/11/2024 07:45

I agree prosecution for manslaughter with the owners of these dogs when they kill. It needs to be more hassle than it's worth.

ToNiceWithSpice · 04/11/2024 07:46

AtlasPine · 04/11/2024 07:33

Names of recently prosecuted owner’s dogs, some of which had killed:

Bully, Beast, Bronson, Titan, Psycho, Killer, Tyson, Lennox, Rocky, Zeus and Thor.

I was thinking about the names and wondering if they are all male and if the males are more prone to aggression

They lost their daughter, which is more punishment than a prosecution ever will be. It's not going to deter people who don't possess the intelligence to understand how dangerous these dogs are.

SpudleyLass · 04/11/2024 00:59

All XL bullies should be culled. No exceptions, no muzzles and no compensation to owners.

Agree completely. Those dangerous animals should not be in public places. No more deaths of innocent children. Horrific.

That's not the way the law works. If you facilitate the death of a person then you should be held responsible.

CurlewKate · 04/11/2024 07:49

I have no problem with culling animals if necessary. There are many worse things for an animal than a quick painless death that they could have no idea was coming.

All young dachshunds I know are barking shiteheads, in fairness. And I used to have one.

I have one who rarely barks. The occasional ‘can I have the toy I can’t reach’ but other than that not a peep.
I have spent my life rescuing dogs. I think xl bullies should be destroyed sadly

I have two dachshunds that were 7 when we adopted them , now 10 and they are very barky shiteheads. Love them dearly but wouldn’t recommend if you’re wanting peace when visiting friends or family come a knocking

yarnbarn · 04/11/2024 07:50

@Givemethreerings

BBC news have not specified the breed. Why would they hold off doing this, or perhaps a scientific test has to be done first to be 100% certain (legally) that the dog is an XL?

Plenty of new outlets have named the breed. No idea why BBC haven't but I don't think they would be asking for a 'scientific test'

Swivelhead · 04/11/2024 07:50

Edit: misread your post, soz

I disagree in culling people's pets. That behvaiour is shameful, we bred them, we made them, and in the UK we have always regarded our companion animals as part of the family.

I do however think that their should be a ban on breeding further generations if certain breeds of dog. There is no need to make more, but better to let the dogs that exist live our their lives.

"Let the dogs that exist live out their lives"

What about existing people? How do you propose bully deaths are prevented? Insurance and penalties for owners don't help after someone is dead or mauled.

yarnbarn · 04/11/2024 07:52

@SweetBobby

That's not the way the law works. If you facilitate the death of a person then you should be held responsible.

I'm not saying they should not be prosecuted though, simply that if the threat of losing their child isn't enough of a deterrent for these people, neither will a prison sentence.

Essentially yes they should be held responsible, but is won't make low intellect people understand the risk any more then they do now.

KoalaCalledKevin · 04/11/2024 07:56

They lost their daughter, which is more punishment than a prosecution ever will be.

Would you use that argument if they'd got drunk, put her in the car, crashed, and killed her?

Owners should absolutely be prosecuted, no matter what relation they are to the victim. Especially if (and I've no idea whether the reporting is true in this case), they acquired the dog after the ban, and therefore illegally.

ToNiceWithSpice · 04/11/2024 07:46

Nah. They go for males because they need their penis extensions (male dogs are bigger and stronger than bitches) to make their sad little lives that bit better.

KoalaCalledKevin · 04/11/2024 07:57

There is no need to make more, but better to let the dogs that exist live our their lives.

Better for whom? Not their victims.

Funnywonder · 04/11/2024 07:57

That poor little girl. Failed by idiot parents.

I'm so utterly sick of people and their platitudes about these dogs. There was a woman on our community Facebook group whining on about how the dog warden had been to her house due to reports of her XL bully puppy being walked without a muzzle. She was so scathing of people, criticising their ignorance, and said the dog was too young to wear a muzzle and that people should approach her and ask questions rather than simply making assumptions and reporting her. Approach her? With her unmuzzled XL bully? She also had a self pitying rant about people crossing the road and giving her a wide berth. I don't know what age XL bullies are supposed to start wearing a muzzle, but of course people are concerned. Someday it will be an absolute brute. She said she was a responsible owner and that her dog was well trained, but she'll be about as much use as a chocolate fire guard if it suddenly snaps, especially when it's older and much much bigger. Anyone who expressed concern in the comments was rounded on and sworn at. Plenty of laughing emojis from her and her cronies. The post was removed, probably because it all got a bit heated. I was surprised by the amount of support she got.

AtlasPine · 04/11/2024 07:57

it’s true though that many if not most xl bullies can be sweet, tail-wagging, cuddly, affectionate and loving. But sadly, they are the exact same dogs who could attack for no understandable reason, and because of their physiology and genetic temperament/drive, kill or maim. Their nice side is enough for some people to take the risk of keeping them. It can’t be denied that they can behave in an adorable way but having one in a family home is like giving a kid a loaded real gun to play with at cops and robbers.

Perhaps this death will be the tipping point for some other owners to consider humanely putting down their xls.
