Another fatal dog attack

So saddened by the news a 10 year old girl has been killed by what sounds to be an XL Bully.

I'm shocked that any family would keep one after so many attacks. There are worse things than kindly being PTS.

It seems like the same line every time "loving family dog, never done anything like this".

How many do there have to be before people realise any XL Bully has it in them. It's not their fault, they're not bad dogs, it's just genetic the same way a dachshund barks or a spaniel's tail wags the dog.

We have two big types of dogs in our street who constantly escape their gardens to fight with each other. The owners are constantly saying sorry to each other. This is a street full of kids.
This will be one of our kids one day.
I don't care if people think that's overly dramatic. Hearing them screaming along with "the dogs got out" or "Shit grab it! Grab it" ... always sets off my anxiety thinking please don't let it be a bairn.

We should bring back licensing. I know for certain the two idiots in my street couldn't even pass a drug test.

FfsBrian · 04/11/2024 07:11

A family member has a XL bully. It’s the widest dog I’ve ever seen. It looks like it’s been taking steroids. Just pure muscle mass. It goes mental when some one knocks on the door, tries to escape when the door is open and I’m scared to death of it. They have grandchildren there all the time. Nightmare

SidekickSylvia · 04/11/2024 07:12

I love dogs, but it's time all XL Bullies were PTS. There is no reason to keep one as a pet, or have one in a home with children when there are so many other breeds to choose from.

That poor little girl, how terrified she must've been. I honestly don't know how any parent can think it's a risk worth taking.

Oreyt · 04/11/2024 07:14

@upat4am

What do you mean sounds like? I've not read anything about its breed.

Motomum23 · 04/11/2024 07:14

It should at the very least be illegal to keep them around children. Adults have the choice whether to live with one or not but we habe a duty to safeguard all children and they should not be in the house with one of those monsters.

NewGreenDuck · 04/11/2024 07:14

All dogs might bite. Any dog, given the circumstances, will take a nip. However a very large dog can cause huge injuries in a short space of time. And some dogs are bred to carry on biting, think about a Jack Russell going after rats, they were bred to do that and are tenacious.
The other issue, of course, is that people often don't care for the dog properly. It's often untrained, not given sufficient exercise and left with a person who stands no chance of controlling it. My old dog was a medium sized mongrel but was still strong. These XL bullies are just muscle, pure and simple. No chance of controlling that.
And I agree they should be euthanized.

Zanatdy · 04/11/2024 07:16

Recently acquired and they lived in a static caravan. These large dogs are often kept in flats which is not good for such a large animal. The ban stipulates no change of ownership so I hope whoever ‘sold’ this dog on is prosecuted and the family for breaking the law in acquiring this dog

Potentialmadcatlady · 04/11/2024 07:16

Swivelhead · 04/11/2024 07:09

All young dachshunds I know are barking shiteheads, in fairness. And I used to have one.

I have one who rarely barks. The occasional ‘can I have the toy I can’t reach’ but other than that not a peep.
I have spent my life rescuing dogs. I think xl bullies should be destroyed sadly

NewstartOct2024 · 04/11/2024 07:17

Yet the stupid XL bully owners will be all over the place trying to prove their own dog is a soft dope that wouldn't hurt a fly. Thick as mince hence having one of these monster dogs with children. I mean who puts a particular breed with children...idiots.

They are putting their grandchildren at risk, why don't they love their grandchildren enough to not keep such an out of control (wild when someone knocks) dog. Idiots. Poor grandchildren deserve better.

Ah I see it's been updated.

Megifer · 04/11/2024 07:22

Police saying not to speculate and I can't find anything even hinting at the breed which is unusual if it was a suspected XL attack.

Very sad for the family.

Edited - ignore it was in the DM and I try not to click their links 😒

I disagree in culling people's pets. That behvaiour is shameful, we bred them, we made them, and in the UK we have always regarded our companion animals as part of the family.

I do however think that their should be a ban on breeding further generations if certain breeds of dog. There is no need to make more, but better to let the dogs that exist live our their lives.

I understand your feelings of anger at the dogs being killed when this problem is "human made". I might even agree if you could guarantee they only attacked breeders or the idiot adults who own them (natural selection anyone?). However, the victims are very often children or people who just happen to be in the way when the dog snaps.

As sad as it is, being peacefully euthanized is a better outcome than a child - who has no real say in being exposed to a dangerous dog - being at significant risk of significant harm.

Dead children and even adults are acceptable to you then to let these monsters live their lives. A 10 year old died a few days ago. There is a growing list of deaths at the jaws of these vile bred to attack monsters

Givemethreerings · 04/11/2024 07:25

BBC news have not specified the breed. Why would they hold off doing this, or perhaps a scientific test has to be done first to be 100% certain (legally) that the dog is an XL?

Agree they should all be destroyed, even ones that aren’t kept with children. They all present a very real threat to life to people generally, but especially to kids.

NewstartOct2024 · 04/11/2024 07:26

HagsRule · 04/11/2024 06:57

How absolutely awful; that poor child.

I'm terrified of those dogs. There's one near us, the owner walks it without a proper muzzle (just a bit of thin rope over it's mouth which would not prevent an attack whatsoever) and when I see her out walking it she really struggles to keep it under control.

So report her before the thin bit of rope goes and it attacks someone.

amoreoamicizia · 04/11/2024 07:29

I'm a lifelong vegetarian and place a high value on animal life. I'm afraid all XL Bully dogs should be put to sleep. People, children, are being torn apart alive. How is this being allowed to continue? If you want evidence that the government doesn't care about people then this is it.

Have you reported it to the dog warden every single time? It’s an offence to have your dog out of control in public, and for your dog to cause reasonable apprehension of harm. Do something about it.

Geranen · 04/11/2024 07:30

@Anotherparkingthread who's this "we", I've never bred any dogs, and if I'd been asked about these ones would not have consented.

KoalaCalledKevin · 04/11/2024 07:33

I agree with a cull. But at the very least they should be removed from houses with children - there's no logic to a law that says they're dangerous enough to need to be muzzled in public, but fine to be at home with children.

This .
I would never have an XL Bully but all the vids you see of them in America show loving family pets . I think whatever has gone wrong here is down badly need people breeding the wrong lines . Sadly I see the Cane Corso being fated as the next devil dog .

Names of recently prosecuted owner’s dogs, some of which had killed:

Bully, Beast, Bronson, Titan, Psycho, Killer, Tyson, Lennox, Rocky, Zeus and Thor.

Indeed, and action should have been taken after one death. If you think of how that girl will have suffered in her last moments, someone somewhere deems that acceptable.

Miloarmadillo2 · 04/11/2024 07:35

There is no enforcement whatsoever of the XL bully ban because a) the authorities don’t know where any non-exempt dogs are until someone reports them and b) there are no resources allocated to it. There were plenty of threatening letter sent to clients who had already got an exemption ahead of the neutering deadline. Those who just didn’t bother (let’s take a wild guess that they are the sort of people who really shouldn’t be allowed to have one) have not suffered any consequences whatsoever and continue on their merry way.
