It's 3pm and already we've had people trick n treating. I've now brought pumpkins inside until 5ish. Anyone else?

Not if they live in the middle of nowhere. No one will come to them. Again, absolutely not understanding the confusion here

There is no confusion

Gorgonemilezola · 01/11/2024 07:00

We had a couple of dozen visitors last year, this year nada! DH is happy though, a whole tub of celebrations to be scoffed...

I wonder if it's decorated house etiquette being followed because we didn't have decorations up this year.

AhBiscuits · 01/11/2024 07:01

I've got zero issue with someone who does not live in an area where they can trick or treat driving somewhere where they can. Everyone is welcome round here and I'm so glad I don't live near miserable fuckers who can't bear to have a non-local sully their precious street.

Grabby? Really? We're talking about a bag of sweets with a total value of a few quid at most. Or is it some of the fun these children are grabbing?

It's nothing to do with a street being precious. 🫣🫣

Please don't do this. I live in a road that people travel to and it REALLY spoils the vibe

It was more this post I was thinking of.

My street doesn't have a vibe, so not 100% sure what that means - maybe it's referring to folk who all know each other and share experiences etc finding it odd when random (and potentially grabby) folk just turn up to exploit the good will of others ? We used to have folk who thought they were better than us, simply because they had bigger houses, turn up and expect us to give them/their kids stuff at halloween. It was all a tad odd - looking down on us for most of the year and then coming begging.

Do you live on a street which is an unofficial "destination" street? Because I do. If it were just a couple of kids it would be fine. Our road was ridiculous last night. One end was blocked with cars from trick and treaters. The littleys went fine then as it got later and people were running out the older kids were knocking (and yes I would call their knocks "hammering" on doors pumpkin or no pumpkin and the whole thing didn't stop til 930.

Sorry by vibe I meant when I moved in there were far fewer kids. You got time to chat to their parents and get to know your neighbours. A bit like a street party. The older kids were polite. But then word seemed to spread. People would bring friends, fine. But then it became people with no connection driving to our street because people kept saying it was a good place to go.

I understand.

We decorated (I think the "only go to decorated houses" is now pretty common) but live in a tucked away position on a cul de sac so the doorbell only went 7 times between 5.30pm and 7.30pm. Perfect for me as we still had the fun of handing out treats but had plenty of chocolates left to eat ourselves! 🤣

Why did the other poster say ‘I don't understand the thought process behind this at all.’ if there’s no confusion?

No, it's Bonfire whining next, then hysteria about Christmas.

Yeah it's not so much the fact it might be a few handfuls of sweets it's the fact the PP is bragging about it

Shunup · 01/11/2024 08:56

it's lovely, marking of the seasons for me as much as a nativity service at christmas or maypole dancing

Totally agree with this. This year I’m marking All Souls’ Day too by visiting the rose bush that marks my parents final resting spot together

We can move past Bonfire Night quite easily.
Some folk love it, for various reasons.
Some folk hate it, for various reasons.
Some folk have mixed views, for various reasons.
I hope those who enjoy it, well, enjoy it.

We've been having a great time! Though there was an elderly man stalking around the streets shouting "Be gone you pagans and devil worshippers! Shame on you celebrating Satan's way. Praise be to Jesus!"
Scariest thing we've seen all evening lol

Ah, you see I think that is properly Hallow’een-y!

I know that Hallow’een is over now - but if you are working from home, put a sheet of paper on your letterbox to say “Please don’t knock - I’m on a work call until 6pm and will put my pumpkin out then”. I did something similar when I had new babies in the house.

The only thing I can get cross about is when people turn up on the wrong day. It sets the children up for disappointment. Even knocking on houses with no decorations is a bit silly - I remember answering the door (years ago, when I was in my twenties) and seeing a disappointed face when I told the dad that I was sorry but I was completely unprepared.

Talking of grabby, what I knew would happen did. The kids that were imported here nicked what they could get their hands on as soon as daylight faded, including decorations people had put out.

cliffdiver · 01/11/2024 10:14

Someone on the local Facebook page had the audacity to moan that many houses had no sweets left at 5.30 am.

Apparently these houses should have been better prepared and anticipated such a high volume of trick or treaters.

It's an excellent idea
