We've had a great night, we go all out decorating the front of the house, so had over 200 kids and were scraping the barrel for sweets and cakes by the time the last ones knocked about 20 mins ago.

DD has counted up her sweets and is very happy with her haul.

You made the choice to give.

As do all the ones in the area the person you are berating

She has every right to go where there are houses to be knocked, where people are inviting people to knock

It is not "grabby"

WhatDaHell · 31/10/2024 20:37

We had small children knocking from 3 this year. Only just stopped opening the door as we ran out of sweets (which is pretty late for us normally).

Absolutely lovely to see the children so excited. So many more around this time. I didn't expect early knockers as we haven't had that before. I'll make sure to be ready earlier next year 🎃

We've yet to hear why it isn't grabby.

Some people can suck the fun out of anything, it must be tiring.

Oh god, this. Why "give" at all if you're going to be so begrudging about it

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 31/10/2024 20:41

I think it should be left until it gets dark.

If they’re too tiny to be out once it’s dark, they’re too tiny for trick or treat imo.

Differentstarts · 31/10/2024 20:42

Iv had a lovely night with my girls so many people took part it's nice to see some community spirit. They got a good haul so their happy and it wasn't raining so I'm happy.

purplebeansprouts · 31/10/2024 20:43

What I need is some sort of vending machine that will only dispense one sweet to each child and then I can leave it running while I don't answer the door

its unwritten around my London suburb town that it’s basically 5-7pm and then hard finish. Only go to houses with decorations. Don’t knock any other houses. Ta dah!!

Feels a bit mean to finish as early as 7!

Whippetlovely · 31/10/2024 20:48

I would say not before 5.30pm and to end by 7.30pm. My son loved it and he loved giving sweets out when we came home. Lots of house had ran out of sweets by 6.15pm. No one knocks houses without decs/ pumpkins. It was busier this year we only have a few sweets left and we are on the quieter street. Just had my last two at 8.15pm thought it was a bit late but they were harmless. Son said he prefers halloween to Xmas.

Bunnycat101 · 31/10/2024 20:53

First was 5pm and was the little ones and then was pretty much over by 7.30. My children had a lovely evening and vast majority of the children were extremely polite and lovely this evening. I reckon we had about 200 kids all in but had anticipated more due to half term. We ran out still by the end of the evening. My Halloween spirit was most definitely increased by drinking Prosecco while my husband went out with the kids. He very rarely gets to do it due to work so it has felt like a lovely day all round.

SnoopysHoose · 31/10/2024 20:56

@VivianLea
My lot always rehearsed a joke before they left, a favourite as they got older that got lots of sweets was; 'what do you do if you see your ex rolling on the ground in agony? shoot him again'🤣🤣

purplebeansprouts · 31/10/2024 19:34

Oh!!!! There's an idea. Next year I'm doing satsumas with faces on. No one will nick them

The satsumas go first!

Wellingtonspie · 31/10/2024 21:17

Had a lone child with father at 9pm. Streets dead. Lights off. Thought it was going to be important. No trick or treat. Did enjoy the old school sheet ghost tho.

I didn’t get any for ages. We’ve moved recently and live down an alleyway that looks like it’s just garages so even though we lit it and decorated all the way along, no one came 😢 so I sat at the end and got so many that I had to fill the bowl up 4 times. It was great, my favourite evening of the year ❤️

So you essentially go just to take?

That’s… what trick or treating is, it’s not a transaction 😂

AliasGrape · 31/10/2024 23:38

Hazeby · 31/10/2024 19:33

I had a carved swede rather than a pumpkin though

Bloody Nora, that must have been hard going. Did you need a hammer and chisel?!

I remember it was really hard - I don’t think it was something the kids got involved with in the same way as now with the pumpkins, or at least for us it was something dad did. It was all bin bag witches costumes too.

They look infinitely more terrifying than pumpkin ones - google swede/ turnip jack o lanterns to see what I mean - an innately more creepy vegetable, I always think the pumpkin is more friendly looking!

Is it?
Don't most people also give to those who come to them?

Not if they live in the middle of nowhere. No one will come to them. Again, absolutely not understanding the confusion here

No confusion from me.
Did you not read the smug post from pp?
