That’s an absolutely brilliant idea! I am going to shamelessly steal it!

You can have it with my spooky blessings!!

AhBiscuits · 31/10/2024 19:41

We started at 5. It's an after dark thing usually. The kids had an absolute ball and have a mountain of sweets. Still a few left in the tub on our step when we got back and are still having the odd straggler knocking now.

Letsgodancing · 31/10/2024 19:41

Had door going non stop between 5pm - 6 30pm, was worried about to run out, ran to the shop to stock up and only had one knock since. Really polite kids with great outfits. My favourite was a girl who was about 10 as Anne boleyn with a dolls head to match under her arm! Did see a few smaller kids get a bit overwhelmed and meltdowns starting. But I'll be better prepared for next year now!

GimmeHRT · 31/10/2024 19:43

Fireworks going off in our neck of the woods. Not as many guisers this year so sweeties and chocolate for dinner tonight 🤭

its unwritten around my London suburb town that it’s basically 5-7pm and then hard finish. Only go to houses with decorations. Don’t knock any other houses. Ta dah!!

I did 40 years ago my DM did it 65 years ago ( London and Cardiff respectively if it matters) then as now a lit pumkin or other decoration = fair game. No pumpkin = don't knock. It isn't difficult or complicated and as far as I am aware the rules have been the same for 50 years.

and actually it's lovely, marking of the seasons for me as much as a nativity service at christmas or maypole dancing all things which were part of DMs childhood in the '50s, my childhood in the '80s and my DC's in the 2010's. Also these children are those severly affected by the pandemic, some of those 9,10,11 yo olds could go at 6,7,8 because we were all locked up. They need to have postive interactions with people- they are noticably shyer and less sure of themselves than those who went before.

That would be for diwali celebrations

That is cool. Someone had a guillotine in the garden and it was moving.

Pootle40 · 31/10/2024 19:45

Jeez I wouldn't answer my door until 6pm!

GivingitToGod · 31/10/2024 19:53

Happy Halloween!
Chill

girlofsandwich · 31/10/2024 19:55

Can't get worked up about it, it's one day a year! I remember sitting on my stairs some years because I would have barely sat on the couch and be up to the door again.

Of course no issue in people bunkering down for the night and not answering the door! And when the sweets run out that's it, lights off curtains closed.

I live in a flat now so no trick or treaters, just a cat with airplane ears and saucer eyes having a meltdown over the fireworks 😭 So he's getting all the treats this year.

Getonwitit · 31/10/2024 19:56

Just give the weans a sweetie.

My house is behind a big hedge (because it cost a fortune last time I got someone to cut it!), and between that and being the only house in my road with a pumpkin out, and being at the end of a dead end, I think the trick or treaters don’t bother walking down far enough to see my pumpkin and so I’ve had no callers :( I was looking forward to seeing the costumes as my Dd went with her father this year, I’m missing out and don’t like it!

Next year you'll have to put your pumpkin in or on your hedge, with an electric candle inside so no fire hazard!

Funkyslippers · 31/10/2024 20:04

NippyCrab · 31/10/2024 19:34

Yes if the house is decorated absolutely. I wasn't going to say anything of the sort but you never truly know who lives next door... 😂

If you did know who lives next door there is greater risk....

MaloryJones · 31/10/2024 20:07

Round here I got my first few Trick or Treaters around 6.00
Last children around 7.15 which was when I brought in the decorations and turned the porch and hall light off
Fireworks on and off since 7.00ish

NoisyDenimShaker · 31/10/2024 20:07

BarbaraHoward · 31/10/2024 19:30

I wouldn't try that in my corner of the UK if I were you...

Why not?

She's driving to take knowing she's not doing any giving.

But she can t force people to visit her house in the back of beyond!
Are you saying her kids should miss out, because of where they live? I don’t suppose anyone who’s taking part will be giving them the 3rd degree about whether they’re givers as well as takers! Who’d begrudge some kids a few sweets at Halloween?

TokyoSushi · 31/10/2024 20:10

Only about 4 here, all appeared to be from the local area 😉

Complaints aplenty now though on local FB sites about 'youths' taking too many sweets! People threatening to look on CCTV to see who it was! 🙄🤣

If you're going to be the authority, at least get your too correct. 😬

Why not?

I live in NI. We don't burn effigies of Catholics outside July celebrate Guy Fawkes here.

TokyoSushi · 31/10/2024 20:14

Oh I hadn't seen that @RayeCyst !!

Anne Boleyn with a doll's head is brilliant!

Lorrymum · 31/10/2024 20:15

We have had so many little trick or treaters that I ran out of sweets after an hour. They were all so polite and excited it was lovely.
