Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

When I checked out that link the products displayed underneath were 2 litres of milk, a cucumber, bananas and carrots! I felt it was a bit "If you like this, you might want to try these"?

It’s the slow creep of normalisation of sex around children.

Imagine chucking a rabbit on the conveyor belt during the weekly shop with your kids on a Saturday morning when it’s packed.

it’s unnecessary and you can get them next day delivery off Amazon .

Sex is a normal adult activity though. Do you have the same problem with pregnancy tests being for sale or alcohol? You can after all but boy online.

mamajong · 27/10/2024 17:57

Yabu, personally i don't see the big deal

Its a supermarket not a creche
And not everyone shops online.

Why? I guess because I’d feel awkward serving someone buying that.. It just seems such a private thing 🤷‍♀️ Also men potentially making young female staff uncomfortable on purpose..

We don't care. It's not as if we sit on break talking about people who buy them, as long as you don't steal them because then it gets awkward.

itsmylife7 · 27/10/2024 17:58

I thought it looked like a pepper grinder at first glance. 😁

I'm just wondering if you order one on your online shopping and they are out of stock whether you get Gary from the warehouse as your substitute!

You win, you definitely win the thread 🙌🙌

Needmorelego · 27/10/2024 17:58

@ShowmetheBotox they used to sell top shelf magazines in WHSmith which despite being on the top shelf every kid probably could see them. They don't anymore. They used to have boobs on page 3 of newspapers. They don't anymore.
Sex is normal. These products are better for children to accidently see than the (almost) naked women that children could see in a daily newspaper.

Really. Flashlights aren't small are they? Admit I've never seen one in the flesh

I have and it was definitely bigger than was necessary for it to be fit for purpose Grin

Barney16 · 27/10/2024 18:00

I haven't ever noticed. Bit that says more about me than Tesco.

Pyjamatimenow · 27/10/2024 17:18

It’s not like they’re selling dildos. You’re talking about those little bullet things. They’re not offensive objects.

I thought that was what it was going to be and I did feel shocked 😁 I only do Tesco online so haven’t come across them (not that I’d buy anyway).

I don’t think I could put that on the conveyor belt though, definitely one for the ‘self service’ (s’cuse the pun)

Nothatgingerpirate · 27/10/2024 18:01

It is too much.
45 yo.
Not interested in seeing vibrators in supermarkets.
😖😤

Onehappymam · 27/10/2024 18:01

Small vibes, lube, condoms… don’t see the big deal.

Penis pumps are a step too far. Really don’t see the need for these to be on sale in Tesco. What next? Nipple clamps? Spanking paddles? Where do you draw the line?

Sure, it's normal, but not with kids around.

Same reason they didn't let kids into the porn section of the video store.

There are parents out there who allow all this kind of stuff openly in the home, including pornographic material. Or take their kids to sex expos with vendors selling all kinds of stuff.

There is definitely a line that is moving as far as what's appropriate for children to be around, and I don't think being so blase about that is going to be a good thing.

Why shouldn't men have their needs meet?

They also sell pregnancy testing kits, baby clothes, baby formula, encouraging young children to normalise the concept ( sorry) that people walking around in Tescos have had sex and got pregnant ! Though maybe if they promoted the condom aisle more they wouldn’t have to sell the end products of normalising sex around children,

The important question - do they have a special Club Card price?

You beat me to it.

VioletCrawleyForever · 27/10/2024 18:04

Some of them are on club card prices 🤣

WestwardHo1 · 27/10/2024 18:04

JenniferBooth · 27/10/2024 17:21

The range is wider in some supermarkets including rabbit ones and fleshlight ones for men

Blimey

I've never seen vibrators in Tesco's. Maybe I haven't been looking hard enough

Serencwtch · 27/10/2024 18:04

JustBrowsingTheWeb · 27/10/2024 17:17

I guess if I could pick I’d probably put condoms behind the pharmacy counter too, I get that people may want to buy these items it’s just that as a parent I want to choose when my kids hear about these things rather than just get exposed to them.

Erm & have unplanned pregnancies and STI's instead.

Face it people are 'doing it' and have been since the beginning of time. Contraception & safe sex should not be hidden away.

Maybe if they've been walking past condoms since they were toddlers they won't feel embarrassed about buying them as teenagers.

Agree I wouldn't want a 'whats that mum' conversation with DC in a supermarket re a vibrator but as long as they are discrete & the packaging, names etc aren't graphic then there's no issue supermarkets selling them. Masturbating is normal & healthy. Blokes do it from early teens so why shouldn't women.

Maybe they could sell the nipple clamps and spanking paddles in the car accessories section with the spark plugs and WD40.

Pulo · 27/10/2024 17:15

They’ve had vibrators by the condoms etc for years. Nothing new and not really anymore shameful than condoms

Not in my local Tesco they haven't, I must live in a prudish area 😁

SerendipityJane · 27/10/2024 18:07

They'll be selling penis beakers next.
