Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

I went down the party aisle and found some straws to clutch

I’m sorry but this really made me laugh GrinGrin

In Sainsbury's they are with the condoms and the lubricants. Which is fair enough.
With the tooth paste does seem strange.

I’m kinda glad the supermarket I work in doesn’t sell those..

Why?

Needmorelego · 27/10/2024 17:36

@HowAmITheCatsGranny why?

Marblesbackagain · 27/10/2024 17:36

YABU. All research shows contraception increased when they became the norm in shops. I have no idea why it bothers you that a sex toy is available for those that want them.

Exactly what harm will it do your child? Surely it's easy enough to explain?

Move to NI and they get put behind nice barriers in supermarkets with restricted purchasing times 😂
The absolute horror that might occur if someone could buy a bottle of wine on their 10am food shop.

In Iceland you can only buy alcohol in vinbudins which are dedicated government owned alcohol shops, only open for a couple of hours a day with a purchasing limit. No corner shops or supermarkets sell alcohol. Apparently it's because they had a lot of problems with alcoholism so the government is now super strict on it.

My husband was devastated 😂

Candaceowens · 27/10/2024 17:37

It's absolutely ridiculous. I come from a very conservative culture and I certainly wouldn't take my children to Tesco now. Even Ann summers keep them in a separate section.

Needmorelego · 27/10/2024 17:28

@JustBrowsingTheWeb supermarkets also have alcohol on full view of children 😱

Yes, and a very long time ago they even had 18 rated dvds 😮

AuntieMarys · 27/10/2024 17:37

Oh get over yourself

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/10/2024 17:37

We're they part of a Clubcard deal?

Asking for a friend.

Baconandddddeggs · 27/10/2024 17:38

‘No toys today darling - let’s go and chose a pizza’

total non issue unless you make it one !

Needmorelego · 27/10/2024 17:38

@bravefox some of them still sell DVDs.
Apparently they also sell these horrible things called The Daily Mail and The Sun.
Urrgh.

StarSlinger · 27/10/2024 17:38

Do you have to get approval for them at the self service check out?

I guess if I could pick I’d probably put condoms behind the pharmacy counter too, I get that people may want to buy these items it’s just that as a parent I want to choose when my kids hear about these things rather than just get exposed to them.

You'd put condoms behind the counter, making it more likely that your children, when teenagers, will feel too embarrassed to ask for them? Potentially making unprotected sex more likely?

Ilovelurchers · 27/10/2024 17:39

From a feminist point of view, a vibrator is an object that primarily exists in order to promote female sexual pleasure. So I would say it's positive that women's sexuality and sexual enjoyment is seen as a reasonable every day thing, available as part of the weekly shop, rather than something sordid to be hidden away.

My daughter is old enough to already know what a vibrator is, but if she had seen one in Tesco when younger and asked me to explain I would have done in an age appropriate way so just as happily as I would have explained condoms, had she asked.

I take it your kids are young! When they are a bit older you will be glad they can nip into a supermarket to put a packet of condoms in their basket without having to ask the pharmacist.

Think education and culture are most important towards promoting safe sex, but at my Tesco pharmacy is literally in the same store not really a barrier, anyone mature enough to be having sex should definitely be able to overcome this “obstacle”

They should, yes.

There are plenty that probably aren't though.

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 27/10/2024 17:39

Why? I guess because I’d feel awkward serving someone buying that.. It just seems such a private thing 🤷‍♀️ Also men potentially making young female staff uncomfortable on purpose..

Fevertreelover · 27/10/2024 17:40

They are not particularly standing out. Can’t same I’m bothered by them.

I'm just wondering if you order one on your online shopping and they are out of stock whether you get Gary from the warehouse as your substitute!

BoobyDazzler · 27/10/2024 17:40

Doesn’t brother me. I’d probably have bought one but the thought of putting one through the till with my milk and bread makes me cringe 🤣

JenniferBooth · 27/10/2024 17:42

pizzaHeart · 27/10/2024 17:27

and your verdict? 😉

This one is great.

I mean really what’s the difference between that and condoms?
One is for males and one is for females making it therefore so much more lewd?

Condoms just for men and comparable to a sex toy? What? I don't see the issue with them selling them but what a strange comment!
