Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

Things I can't get worked up about: increasing visibility of things designed to help women discover the potential of their own bodies and sexuality.

Surely if you're worried about what you say to your small children if they ask what they are is just what you'd say about condoms or pregnancy tests or whatever it you're coy about this kind of things, something along the lines of "it's for grown ups"?

Tbh I'm more bothered by the big signs/advertisements in chemists for viagra with slogans like "helping you connect" and - as in our local pharmacy- a big, shelf-high ad for it that literally says "erectile dysfunction" under the name. My ten year old had questions about that, questions less easy to answer than "it's for grown ups" 😂

“Decades” when referring to 1.98 decades is a whole lot close than you claiming supermarket have “just started” to stock these products.

You're making that up, though.

I said that it was "not long ago" that items like butt plugs were in age restricted areas of stores like Anne Summers.

I'm aware that vibrators have been in stores a little longer, but even then, less than 2 decades is not "literally decades" by any reasonable interpretation of the phrase (and if you want to dig into decimals, it is not 1.98 decades since June 2015.)

HollyKnight · 27/10/2024 21:17

My local Tesco has the condoms locked in a glass cabinet beside the paracetamol 🤦🏻‍♀️

Why are you - and other posters, but your posts are WAY more specific - trying to conflate the issues here?

There is nothing wrong with adult sex toys, sex toys for women or making them freely and widely available. There is nothing shameful or problematic about them whatsoever.

There IS something wrong with exposing young kids to adult sex toys, and normalising kids being exposed to adult sexual behaviour in any context.

Seriously, in what way are children “being exposed” to anything?
Its a couple of boxes with no graphic imagery on the front and literally no way for a child to have any clue what’s inside unless they are an older teen and already know a lot about sex and therefore have been exposed elsewhere already.
Do you understand there’s not a live demo in the store?
A child would have absolutely no clue what’s in the box nor what it’s for.

No I wouldn't round 8 days up to 2 weeks. I might 13 days though.

"Literally weeks" would absolutely be an exaggeration of a 13 day period too.

Needmorelego · 27/10/2024 21:19

@Warz Tesco's better stop selling The Sun newspaper then. Because even without the Page 3 boobies it's full of sex articles and headlines.

Cerealkiller4U · 27/10/2024 21:19

I mean meh

couldnt get worked up over this. But I’m super open with my kids who are older than yours. But we’ve never hid sex or anything so wouldn’t of had an issue explaining this anyway 🤷‍♀️

Well I get annoyed when newspapers have headlines about x happening literally yards from z location when it's a mile and a half away but technically it's correct.

Alcohol, vapes, gambling, cigarettes and sex are all "adult pursuits"

3 of those involve literal poison. 4 of them are addictive. Only 1 is considered so horrendous that children cannot even see a box and be told "it's for adults".

And condoms and lube are just as much part of "adult sexual behaviour".

Yes, I do understand that.

There's a whole thread of posters falling over themselves to make it okay for sex toys to be in store, and within the sightline of young kids, all citing, 'they don't understand/it's fine anyway/what's the problem/etc.'

I disagree profoundly with that POV, for the reasons I cited upthread.

I’m intrigued by the “rows and rows” of vibrators, in my Tesco there’s just a couple

really? At mine the whole bakery section is now anal beads alone

I just laughed way too hard at this 🤣🤣

Candledr · 27/10/2024 21:27

Missmarple87 · 27/10/2024 19:41

Bloody hell. Do you not realise how awful hearing about that can be to a child who is not old enough to even remotely understand? How scary it could seem?

If they aren’t old enough to understand then they shouldn’t be in the condoms and lube aisle 🙄 not sure why they’d be scared either!

jumpintheline · 27/10/2024 21:27

I wouldn’t give a stuff if my 5 year old spotted them. I’d say something vague and move on.

Far more difficult is all the junk food which he will ask repeatedly for and make a scene about being forced to put back.

No. You've tried this line in your other posts.

I think at least one other poster reported your posts - I see you're not dissuaded from your view that you've got a really excellent point to make.

Couldn’t agree more with this.

I had to laugh at the thought of vibrators being “scary.”

You still aren't explaining how it's creepy. Or why the hypocrisy is ok.

Plenty of people have "thanked" my posts which I'm assuming means they agree with me

You're acting like I think kids should have live demonstrations of sex toys and be encouraged to use them at home whilst watching hard-core porn...

Terea · 27/10/2024 21:31

Anyone read the Tesco reviews? If you need a laugh…..🤭

Loly79 · 27/10/2024 21:32

There was a video on facebook, someone was showing that they were selling these in their local Big Tesco

Do you get a discount with clubcard?
Um, asking for a friend.

@RedWinePoliticsAndHair see I don’t get this. My 9 yr old asked the exact same thing and I told her it’s a medicine for adult men whose penises don’t work properly. No-one was scarred for life by that.

I don't entirely agree with the PP but they're making a valid point and I think you, and others, are grossly misrepresenting them.

RosesAndHellebores · 27/10/2024 21:37

Golly, I had enough trouble finding a jar of mint sauce in Tesco this morning. I'll have a look next week, hopefully they'll be a special Clubcard price 😀. I wonder if Janice on checkout three will notice, she usually comments if I put a nice pudding through! Presumably if I were to buy one, they'd come up on my previously bought items when I log on for a home delivery. Perhaps one should pay cash at the customer services counter?

I bet Lady Porter thinks it's hilarious. Wonder if she's got one.

Please explain

I'm serious

I keep getting accused of being creepy

But no one can explain why

BobbyBiscuits · 27/10/2024 21:37

It wouldn't bother me personally, but they should probably be in their own section, maybe close to condoms, lube etc.
Not really near anything that little kids might be looking at.
I guess if they were locked away behind the desk it would be more embarrassing as people would have to verbally request it.
