Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

People making jokes about brown bags and dodgy backstreet shops seem to forget that this wasn't 100% about sex being shameful....it was also about not exposing children to inappropriate things.

@Missmarple87 what like their dad leering over 16yr old Samantha Fox topless over cornflakes? Or the newspaper countdown to when 15yr old Charlotte Church was ‘legal.” Come off it. Sexual pleasure was monopolised by men. Women didn’t come into it. Now women can come. Of their own accord, after a trip to Tesco.

StripyHorse · 27/10/2024 20:57

Bit much for the weekly shop?
Yes.

If you need to pick up a new vibrator weekly, that probably is a bit too much.

An occasional purchase - not a problem.

CJsGoldfish · 27/10/2024 20:58

Meh.
I'm far more bothered by the fact that alcohol is an accepted part of the 'weekly shop'. In plain view and so utterly normal
Pretty sure alcohol has a far, far greater impact on children and society as a whole 🤷‍♀️

At my local store they're on the aisle and also at the customer service counter, a shelf or two over from Pokémon trading cards and alike.

Someone is spending a lot of time looking for the sex products in Tesco!

I through the whole point of was that some people preferred them being behind the counter? If they are at customer services they are behind the counter by definition because that’s the layout Tesco use.

Well that's just it, I wasn't looking for them - they were just there on display, and I found it surprising, particularly given their proximity to things marketed at children.

Bromptotoo · 27/10/2024 21:02

There are all sorts of things from female hygiene through condoms, explicit books/magazines, KY jelly and its variations to Viagra that kids will see and want to ask questions about.

You just have to deal with it.

JustBrowsingTheWeb · 27/10/2024 17:17

I guess if I could pick I’d probably put condoms behind the pharmacy counter too, I get that people may want to buy these items it’s just that as a parent I want to choose when my kids hear about these things rather than just get exposed to them.

Supervised your kids closely then they'll not notice them.

That's not a butt plug?

Also, 19 years ago is not "literally decades".

10 years = a decade
19 years = 1.9 decades
Literally

Oh no, saying that is weird and creepy apparently

Samphire44 · 27/10/2024 21:06

The number of children affected by obesity and ill health from the rows upon rows of high sugar ultra processed food in Tescos is far high than those adversely affected by the presence of a vibrator.

So "literally decades" in the same way that 8 days is "literally weeks".

🙄

I’m sure some medical staff would disagree with that statement!

And even closer when you take into account we’re in the final days of the 10th month of the 9th year of the second decade.

Pureasthedrivensnowww · 27/10/2024 21:08

I think we forget there are a whole swathe of women in this country that don’t associate sex with pleasure, because of their partners usually. It tends to make them rail against those who do and create these ridiculous arguments that children who see a vibrator will be scarred for life. I mean you could literally say to a child ‘adults use them during sex’ and they wouldn’t be harmed.

Completelyjo · 27/10/2024 21:09

Reserved101 · 27/10/2024 21:07

🙄

“Decades” when referring to 1.98 decades is a whole lot close than you claiming supermarket have “just started” to stock these products.

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 27/10/2024 21:11

I really thought this thread was going to be about discounted vibrators in Tesco, with OP thinking there wasn’t as much money off them as she’d like.

I'm sure some people do

LouH5 · 27/10/2024 21:12

I’m intrigued by the “rows and rows” of vibrators, in my Tesco there’s just a couple along with the lube, pregnancy tests and cock rings. Is it really any different to a 7 year old wondering what a bottle of lube is? 🤷🏻‍♀️

No I wouldn't round 8 days up to 2 weeks. I might 13 days though.

Bromptotoo · 27/10/2024 21:13

The fact you had to go into Boots and ask your Mums mate who worked there for a condom did nothing to stop unwanted pregnancy.

Picking one up with a sandwich and a can of coke is so much easier.

I went to buy cat food for the neighbours cat on my online Tesco shop. Typed in Friskies (got whiskas and dreamies in a right muddle!) . Got the shock of my life when only a vibrator came up 🤣 not a bit of cat food in sight!

JellycatParent · 27/10/2024 21:14

Get a grip. I hope you feel the same about condoms, but I imagine not as they’re for men!

really? At mine the whole bakery section is now anal beads alone

Please tell me what is disgusting and sick about what I've said? Genuinely?

Why is it OK to let kids be exposed to poisons but a sex toy they won't understand, in discreet packaging, is not ok? I'm not saying they should be using them!!!

Why are you - and other posters, but your posts are WAY more specific - trying to conflate the issues here?

There is nothing wrong with adult sex toys, sex toys for women or making them freely and widely available. There is nothing shameful or problematic about them whatsoever.

There IS something wrong with exposing young kids to adult sex toys, and normalising kids being exposed to adult sexual behaviour in any context.
