Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

I don't entirely agree with the PP but they're making a valid point and I think you, and others, are grossly misrepresenting them.

Thank you

I want it clear I don't think children should be exposed to sex beyond their age.

It wouldn't bother me personally, but they should probably be in their own section, maybe close to condoms, lube etc.
Not really near anything that little kids might be looking at.
I guess if they were locked away behind the desk it would be more embarrassing as people would have to verbally request it.

They are usually with the lube and condoms. Which are usually with paracetamol and ibuprofen and other medicine children shouldn't have ready access to

What I find worse (and I agree OP, it is quite odd to have sex toys in a supermarket. Cock rings next?) is when newspaper bill boards on the street have CHILD PORN in massive letters as a headline. At child height. That any reading age child can be smacked in the eyeballs with. So many massive problems with that.

“This product isn’t available right now”

must have been a rush since you posted the link…

They’ve sold cock rings in supermarkets a lot longer than vibrators.

Where is the misrepresentation? It's literally reading what they have typed and calling it creepy.

Hope Tesco is paying @JustBrowsingTheWeb on a per-sale basis

Couldn’t agree more with this.

I had to laugh at the thought of vibrators being “scary.”

Right! That’s my Halloween costume sorted anyway 🍆 👻

What does that sentence actually mean?

Tesco already stocks cock rings.

What does that sentence actually mean?

It means "children" covers a very big age range and at different ages children should be exposed to a level of "sexual content" as they begin sex education at school. Building from "healthy relationships" to "safe sex"

So does Poundland

BobbyBiscuits · 27/10/2024 21:49

@MartinCrieffsLemon in that case it sounds fairly reasonable. Though I guess they could still ask questions. And often they're bright colours and shiny so a kid could find it intriguing looking!

Their argument: "isn't it a bit hypocritical that people are aghast at the idea of supermarkets exposing kids to the existence of sex toys, when those same stores also promote things like alcohol, tobacco and gambling which are not age appropriate and even more harmful?".

Your implied response: "You're a nonce".

CRD67 · 27/10/2024 21:50

To balance it out for the sake of equality, fleshlights for men need to be on sale too!!! 😀

What have young kids seeing sex toys in Tescos got to do with children being taught about sex and relationships in the right setting, with age-appropriate content?

Your mistake. I've done it once, I believe - maybe twice at most? Other posters have called you weird and creepy, as well, I believe. You're getting confused.

I don't think you're in one shred of doubt why you're getting accusations, either.

Warz · 27/10/2024 21:51

You seem to think they shouldn't be exposed to sex at all because it's "adult"

And I was clarifying, for the posters like you who keep calling me creepy, that I don't think children should be exposed to sex beyond their age. You asked what that meant so I clarified.

Carouselfish · 27/10/2024 21:57

@Pureasthedrivensnowww yes, the key words you've used are age appropriate. At 9 they haven't yet done the mechanics of sex at school. That will be next year.
Wanking and tools developed for it is not on the agenda for a while.
And from several other posts it's not just discreet bullets at all!

valentinka31 · 27/10/2024 21:59

WetBandits · 27/10/2024 19:21

I’m not sure what sort of penises you’ve seen, but this looks nothing like one to me. It’s also rechargeable, no batteries required Wink

You know what’s ‘subliminally pressurising’? Teaching your daughters that using sex toys, should they wish to, is wrong. You might not want to use a sex toy, and that is entirely your prerogative, but there’s nothing wrong with someone else choosing to use them. Even if that is your own daughter.

honestly, I really don't know where I said that people can't choose them. I just said putting them in a family supermarket is something I don't agree with.

And penis or whatever, it's a tool for stimulation. So ridiculous to fix on the odd word and try to make that into the argument. It's a detraction from the point. Which is that I think it's wrong to normalise artificial stimulation rather than letting adults choose that if/when they want. In Tesco where kids and young teens can see it does give it a kind of endorsement.

valentinka31 · 27/10/2024 22:01

SwingTheMonkey · 27/10/2024 19:22

How will you prevent your daughter from owning a vibrator when she’s older?

I really don't know how to make this plainer, in English:

I am not saying anyone can't buy a vibrator (including my family members - that's their business). BUT I don't like them being present on a shelf where kids and young teens can see them.
