Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

Horrors. When I started my periods in the early 60s my DM sent me to buy the pads at the local haberdashery, where the packet was wrapped up in brown paper and string, and had to be hidden in the basket, so men were not able to see it. Thank goodness by the late 60s tampons were sold in Tescos. Later when my DD had a BF I bought condoms in the supermarket with the rest of the Saturday shop. Life progresses.

Some of us think about things a little more deeply, I guess.

Ahh, there’s no need. If you don’t want your kids to see the vibrators, don’t loiter down that aisle. It really is that simple and doesn’t need overthinking.

and your verdict? 😉

I am hoping it was more a case of ‘every little helps’ than JS’s slogan 😂

Notjustabrunette · 27/10/2024 20:16

Slightly off topic, but when I lived in Dubai it was illegal for shops to sell sex toys. Anyway, someone spotted ‘massagers’ which were obviously vibrators in one of the supermarkets. The expat mums Facebook group went wild.

AlwaysGinPlease · 27/10/2024 20:17

@MartinCrieffsLemon You are sick. Reported your disgusting posts.

Craftycorvid · 27/10/2024 20:17

Maybe a bit much amid the cauliflowers or the loo roll.

Missmarple87 · 27/10/2024 20:17

Needmorelego · 27/10/2024 20:12

@Missmarple87 yes but many of us on this thread have said that if children asked about these products they would generally be told "they're for adults" giving the clear message that sex is something for adults. When children are old enough to be aware what sex is and they might know a bit more what condoms, lube, sex toys etc if they are repeatedly taught they are "for adults" then it's telling them sex is for adults. Not children.
Selling these products in Tesco isn't telling children they should be having sex.

Nope, it not telling children they should have sex but it's the creeping exposure to a sexual world. The normalisation of bringing sexual preferences into the public sphere. For the thousandth time - something we used to agree as a society to keep children away from until it was appropriate. The breaking down of boundaries.

You have people on this thread trying to compare kids seeing a bottle of wine with a rampant rabbit which is deeply disturbing.

shuggles · 27/10/2024 20:18

What the fuck is a "pleasure cup"?

justasking111 · 27/10/2024 20:18

Needmorelego · 27/10/2024 19:41

@Missmarple87 do you think supermarkets should also stop selling alcohol, cigarettes, vapes, lottery tickets, scratch cards etc.
These are "adult" products that no one actually needs.
So take them out of the supermarket.
But then you don't need crisps so they can go. And chocolate bars. Frozen pizzas. Even paperback novels or toys or felt tip pens.... anything that isn't basic meat, fruit+ veg, bread, dairy......
But then it wouldn't be a supermarket any more. The whole point of supermarkets is convenience. Everything under one roof. I don't want to have to go to 8 different shops for a weekly shop.

Now you're talking about the Welsh government

justasking111 · 27/10/2024 17:24

Really. Flashlights aren't small are they? Admit I've never seen one in the flesh

Thought I knew it all. What on earth is a flashlight apart from an emergency torch
😂

Magnastorm · 27/10/2024 20:18

Missmarple87 · 27/10/2024 20:07

Nope you missed my point and just did it again.

It's got nothing to do with me not wanting to buy one, I don't agree they should be there for the very clear reasons I have set out. It's a matter of principle. I care!

Edited

What is your point, exactly, then?

If it's that kids shouldn't be exposed to things for adults, presumably you think supermarkets shouldn't carry vapes, or tobacco, or booze or, I dunno, adult sized clothes either?

Fact is, things like this are all around us and it's up to parents to deal with the, not to expect everyone else to have to fanny around going online to buy something because you can't be arsed to explain what a discretely packaged tiny vibe is to a kid which is never going to ask what it is anyway.

Once upon a time it was considered pushing it for a women to expose their ankles.

Fuck that. Times change.

its actually a ‘flesh light’. A male maturbator.

ETA - looks like a torch but with a hole in it!!

User75235 · 27/10/2024 20:20

Clicked on this thread literally thinking it was "ON SALE" like, heavy discount and needed to know which Tesco. Big disappointment.

suburburban · 27/10/2024 20:20

I wouldn't feel comfortable buying this and it rolling down the conveyor belt with the frozen peas or through a self service till and it needs to be okayed by supervisor

I have made my point many times on this thread. And you are going to persist on suggesting it's about convenience, that is your issue with comprehension.

I'm going to leave this because, as a couple of people have said, there are some very creepy posters on this thread.

I went down the party aisle and found some straws to clutch

Is it not pearls we clutch when we're being prudes?

And staws when the best argument we have it rather weak...

Anyway, I am the prude here too. Horrible thing to see in Tesco. Not OK.

FergusSingsTheBIues · 27/10/2024 20:21

It’s vulgar and makes my children really uncomfortable

Forwhatitsworth18 · 27/10/2024 20:21

Efrogwraig · 27/10/2024 18:59

We don't have them in our Tesco. I shall have to complain!

Where do you look? I want a laugh 🤣

Needmorelego · 27/10/2024 20:22

@Missmarple87 I give up.
Perhaps you should have lived during puritan times or something.

Needmorelego · 27/10/2024 20:23

@FergusSingsTheBIues why are your children looking at them?

Think education and culture are most important towards promoting safe sex, but at my Tesco pharmacy is literally in the same store not really a barrier, anyone mature enough to be having sex should definitely be able to overcome this “obstacle”

Jesus!!

Of course it's a barrier. Its making sex shameful that you have to ask at the counter to buy them.

It's far better that people can just pick them up and go through self service checkout.

Safe sex is paramount and overrides your so called moral outrage.

You would hate our local pharmacy - have a basket with loose packets of condoms - free of charge, just help yourself, on the shelf. No need to ask or pay.

Completelyjo · 27/10/2024 20:02

By “not long ago” you’re talking decades, literally decades.

Here’s a vibrator stocked in supermarkets in 2005!

www.marketingweek.com/durex-sexual-enhancement-toy-on-sale-in-supermarkets/

That's not a butt plug?

Also, 19 years ago is not "literally decades".

suburburban · 27/10/2024 20:26

@Yelloworangetomato

So am I

Mrsknowitall · 27/10/2024 20:28

Procrastinates · 27/10/2024 17:19

But these things should be normalised. Condoms and vibrators are just normal parts of adult life no different from seeing alcohol and pregnancy tests. Hmm

Edited

Normalised to children! Are you having a laugh? “Mummy, what are these” well son mummy inserts them into her fanny because it feels really good to the point I orgasm”
seriously I’m all for teaching kids about the birds and the bee’s but normalising sex toys to children is just plain perverted
