Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

Do I have to say it again?

Because they can buy them in an adults only store/at the click of a button. They don't need to buy them in Tesco.

Being sex positive/pro female pleasure is not mutually exclusive from thinking that children should not be exposed to unnecessary sexual things at too young an age.

But why can't people buy bullet vibes etc in a supermarket?

You don't want to. Fair enough. It doesn't hurt you if someone else does, does it? And since when did any bored child pay any attention to what's on a shelf at any shop, be it boots or tescos?

And even if they do, you just explain in an age appropriate way what these things. Its not hard.

I mean, vibrators being available doesn't deeply concern me, but you are being incredibly obtuse.

Asking someone to expand on a one word comment on a post, and finding it funny that they can't with a flimsy excuse is not being obtuse.

(And, having a different opinion to other people on a discussion board is not either.)

Missmarple87 · 27/10/2024 19:38

I think you're hard of understanding.

They're laughing because they have very comprehensively convinced you of the need to buy lots of plastic crap as part of a 'normal, healthy sex life'.

Someone earlier on said they would tell their child 'thats something men use during sex'. Wtaf?! This is not how we should be approaching conversations about sex with young people.

Eh? women buy vibrators because they like them. It's really not that deep.

Okay so it does look like Sainsbury's are indeed stocking butt plugs now.

It is a bit of a shift. Not long ago these sorts of items would be in the 18+ only parts of stores like Anne Summers.

Surely it depends on the size?

I do DM’s internet shopping for her, usually sat next to her.

Recently, she wanted some Teasers (like Maltesers, but chunkier). Anyway, I couldn’t find them under Maltesers, so I searched for Teasers, and this, I shit you not, was what came up.

Not awkward. At. All.

Each of the last three responses to me has missed the point so spectacularly that I'm beginning to think this thread is populated entirely by bored incels or AI bots. Certainly nobody who cares about children.

Sex toys do not need to be for sale in places where children are exposed to them. It's just not necessary. They are easily purchasable elsewhere. Sex is private - not because it's shameful - for many other good reasons, child safeguarding being top of the list.

To be clear:

  • I don't care if you want to buy sex toys
  • women should not be ashamed about seeking sexual pleasure.

By “not long ago” you’re talking decades, literally decades.

Here’s a vibrator stocked in supermarkets in 2005!

Wtaf?

Well, children shouldn't be exposed to sex obviously. But sexual aids are designed to pleasure and don't hurt anyone. Unlike gambling, smoking, alcohol and vaping

MartinCrieffsLemon · 27/10/2024 20:04

And I don't know why my one comment broke guidelines tbh. Kids do stick things up their bum. And I was clear it was for not sexual reasons.

By missing the point do you mean disagree with you?

Yep, think you do.

Supermarkets sell lots of things. So what if they sell little bullet vibes and so what if a kid sees one? Either they are young enough to be brushed off with "that's for adults" or they are old enough to understand what they are. Either way, it's not hard to navigate a world where such things are sold on entirely different aisles to anything a kid would remotely be interested in.

You don't want one? Fine! Don't buy one. If people want to pick one up to have a fun little time by themselves without having to go online, then who cares?

Missmarple87 · 27/10/2024 20:06

@MartinCrieffsLemon your comments are creepy AF and prove all of my points tbh.

There are lots of vile people who have a vested interest in making sure that sexual pleasure is normalised in the eyes of children.

Nope you missed my point and just did it again.

It's got nothing to do with me not wanting to buy one, I don't agree they should be there for the very clear reasons I have set out. It's a matter of principle. I care!

Oh ye it's so creepy to want women not to be ashamed of their sexual pleasure...

Much better to encourage kids to vape and drink and gamble because that's already normal...

SwingTheMonkey · 27/10/2024 20:08

Just don’t loiter down the jonnie aisle long enough for your kids to read the words on the vibrator boxes @Missmarple87. It’s not rocket science.

Some of us think about things a little more deeply, I guess.

They are not particularly standing out. Can’t same I’m bothered by them.

Next to the 'Sleep and Stress' shelf seems logical enough 😄

Birdscratch · 27/10/2024 20:10

Alcohol is genuinely harmful and we don’t hide that away.

Good for you..enjoy 😂

those reviews are like something from a porn site/mag

Needmorelego · 27/10/2024 20:12

@Missmarple87 yes but many of us on this thread have said that if children asked about these products they would generally be told "they're for adults" giving the clear message that sex is something for adults. When children are old enough to be aware what sex is and they might know a bit more what condoms, lube, sex toys etc if they are repeatedly taught they are "for adults" then it's telling them sex is for adults. Not children.
Selling these products in Tesco isn't telling children they should be having sex.

Shh don't try and logically point out the hypocrisy of "well smoking and drinking is normal so you can sell the poison to kids but just make sure you hide all the sex toys they won't even understand"
