Vibrators on sale at Tesco, thought it was a bit much

Went to buy some toothpaste with my kids, 7 year old wants to see new toy in plastic boxes, it’s rows and rows of vibrators. Is it just me or is this a bit much for the weekly shop?

Quite amused at the faux horror about a shop that sells bananas,. cucumbers, courgettes and butternut squashes also happens to stock a small range of adult toys ....

Not to mention....aubergines

The point of my post was that they are extremely readily available elsewhere. And we used to agree, as a society, that we should be discrete about sex in places accessible to children. This was for very good reason. I would argue that 'accessories' should hardly be the front line of explaining health, normal sex lives to young people.

Why do you need to buy your sex toys with your onions?

Why do you care if people do?

I mean really what’s the difference between that and condoms?
One is for males and one is for females making it therefore so much more lewd?

Hardly the same thing is it 🤦🏻‍♀️

Newsenmum · 27/10/2024 19:41

Omg that’s hilarious. If it’s ‘ok’ then so are fleshlightd I suppose! As long as they are all within the adult section away from children.

GroovyChick87 · 27/10/2024 19:41

I don't think it's a big deal. The ones on display are usually quite discreet for what they are, pocket vibes and mini bullets etc. You won't find any obscenely realistic plastic penises whilst picking up your bread and milk.

Needmorelego · 27/10/2024 19:41

@Missmarple87 do you think supermarkets should also stop selling alcohol, cigarettes, vapes, lottery tickets, scratch cards etc.
These are "adult" products that no one actually needs.
So take them out of the supermarket.
But then you don't need crisps so they can go. And chocolate bars. Frozen pizzas. Even paperback novels or toys or felt tip pens.... anything that isn't basic meat, fruit+ veg, bread, dairy......
But then it wouldn't be a supermarket any more. The whole point of supermarkets is convenience. Everything under one roof. I don't want to have to go to 8 different shops for a weekly shop.

Candledr · 27/10/2024 19:36

Lots of adults enjoy sticking things up their arses 😂 relax

Bloody hell. Do you not realise how awful hearing about that can be to a child who is not old enough to even remotely understand? How scary it could seem?

What do you use condoms for if not for sex?

I’ve got 4 children and vibrators have been on the shelves in high street shops for years. Not once have I ever had to explain what a vibrator is to any of them following a visit to a shop.

If any of them did ask, I simply say it was something for an adult to use. Easily done and no need for any pearl cluthcing.

Are you being deliberately obtuse?

You think vapes and sex toys are remotely similar?

As a society we used to mutually agree that we should keep children away from sexually inappropriate content. Things they would not understand and could potentially find upsetting due to that lack of understanding. The blurring of those boundaries is deeply concerning to me. They are absolutely are absolutely no parallels with a lottery ticket FFS.

Should we all have to act as though someone else has their kids around us in every scenario of life?
If you’re reading crude mumsnet comments to your kids that’s on you, it’s not remotely comparable to a small box nestled in between the strawberry condoms and tingly lube.
If your kids are hanging around that aisle maybe the could do with you talking to them.

Why would you be saying that to the child... That's more concerning than the items being for sale!

Reserved101 · 27/10/2024 19:45

Honestly, thought I'm not scandalized by it I do think its a bit strange that a certain category of sex toys are now available at Tesco.

I do expect many of those who see no issue would draw their own line at things like butt plugs or fleshlights - there's obviously a line somewhere and I don't think people who think the line should be just before vibrators, rather than just after them, are ridiculous prudes.

BalletCat · 27/10/2024 19:46

Magnastorm · 27/10/2024 18:54

Care to explain why? I'll wait.

You'll be waiting a while. It's been explained to you several times, I'm not doing it again.

VeraYin · 27/10/2024 19:46

Yabu. If they ask just say it's for adults and walk away. I really don't see the big deal, presumably you're a sexually active adult or have been in the past?

I definitely don't think condoms, vibrators etc should be behind the counter. They need to be easily available for purchase.

Gettingbysomehow · 27/10/2024 19:47

I've seen small durex ones in a discrete box with the condoms but sex shop style rows are too bloody much.

AcceptAllChanges · 27/10/2024 19:48

I know this makes me a dinosaur, but I just don't really get how having sex with a piece of plastic is liberating.

Needmorelego · 27/10/2024 19:49

@Missmarple87 yes sex toys and vapes are completely different things but your theory was sex toys shouldn't be sold in a "family" shop.
So by that theory neither should vapes (or alcohol or cigarettes or Lotto) be sold.
My point was supermarkets aren't "family" shops. They're for everyone. They sell things for different people and different demographics.

TurkeyLurkey4 · 27/10/2024 19:49

YANBU. The other week, my DH came back from Sainsbury’s and told me he’d seen butt plugs in one aisle! 🤯

Magnastorm · 27/10/2024 19:40

Why do you care if people do?

Do I have to say it again?

Because they can buy them in an adults only store/at the click of a button. They don't need to buy them in Tesco.

Being sex positive/pro female pleasure is not mutually exclusive from thinking that children should not be exposed to unnecessary sexual things at too young an age.

Nope, wasn't my point at all. Like all the others, you've managed to miss it.

Alcohol and cigarettes are all something children are exposed to through normal life (can hardly stop them seeing someone vaping). Sex happens behind closed doors and not in front of children. There is no parallel. It's almost as poor as the parallel with condoms...

Your children will only see them if you happen to be loitering in that part of the aisle. As I’ve already said, in 14 years of taking my children to the supermarket, not one of them has ever noticed vibrators on the shelf.

Needmorelego · 27/10/2024 19:54

@Missmarple87 children are hardly being exposed.
They are sold in an area of the shop I can't imagine children are particularly interested in.
If children see them and ask about them the answer to give is "I don't know what they are" or "They're for adults".
