The Labour Party are bloody hypocrites

I think Angela rayner has got a nerve to start slashing the right to buy when she has profited from it, is she going to give the money back then that she pocketed from this scheme when she sold her house? I have always been a labour supporter and I am as working class as they come but I am so angry about this. I am not denying that the right to buy policy has its issues but it's just tinkering around the edges of the housing crisis and ignoring the real issues. I may be slightly emotional about this as I live in a one bedroomed council flat that I was planning on buying next year, my only hope of probably ever owning a property. Instead, if and when I choose to have children and I am overcrowded, they will now have to rehouse me themselves instead to a bigger property and I will now probably be a lifelong council tenant. Fabulous. Why are they targeting the people at the bottom? I can't support them anymore sadly.

You should move to Vienna OP, a place where social housing is as commonplace as Tory whingers on MN. Then you wouldn't feel so deprived and upset that you may not get a handout to buy a house. There are many people in this country who'd be thrilled to be in your place with a secure tenancy. They can't find anywhere affordable, partly due to the majority of social housing having been sold to private buyers. Many of these formerly council-owned homes are now rented out at extortionate rents so that the renters cover the now owners mortgage. Do you think this is a good system for social cohesion? It is not.

very little this is true:

You would have to replace your passport with, say, a Sudanese or Syrian one meaning you would have had to escape severe danger in your home country to get here.
you may die on the journey over from Calais in the dodgy dinghy
you might get put up in a basic hotel whilst your asylum claim was heard, but you wouldn’t be allowed to work and would be entitled to around £9 per week from the state. People like this poster might surround your accommodation and heckle you, or worse.
you might get some basic healthcare if you need it, possibly provided by a (legal) immigrant given how many prop up the NHS. NHS dentistry is pretty hard for anyone to obtain nowadays.
you wouldn’t get anywhere near the top of the social housing list. If you are an able bodied adult, you might well end up street homeless after you obtain refugee status.

I think a much bigger issue is people being allowed to stay in properties that are no longer suitable for them. My aunt lives in a four bedroomed council house in her 50's when her children are all in their 30's and moved out. She then gave her kids house deposits. It keeps the housing stock stagnant. My mum lives in a three bedroomed council house and has asked to downsize and she has been told no.

Can you just swop with your mum (not sure if thats allowed). Gives her a downsize and you a property can raise a family in.

This is because all the fuckers in one-bedroom flats that she could downsized to have bought them at giveaway prices.

(How big was that flat you were planning to buy, OP? Grin)

they get as above £8.86 per week if their b & b is paid - for phone credit, toiletries, travel, clothes…

£49.18 - on a payment card - if they need to feed themselves too.

no one can feed themselves on £9 per week.

it’s all still very basic.

You've benefitted from council housing which probably clouds your view a bit. I am a private tenant & have been for 12 years - I contacted the council recently & was told for a home in my area there are over 8000 people waiting. For one council area. Because I am 'adequately housed' I am no priority & therefore stuck spending ££££ on a private let and hoping that my daughter can get through the next 6 years at school before I need to move/am evicted. The issue is the the majority of housing stock was sold off so there are very very limited homes available. I can't save for a deposit as my home is expensive to rent, I'm trapped here as my daughter is settled at school & I do like the area but it is outwith my reach to ever buy. I would honestly be on cloud 9 if I could have a council flat but I've more chance of winning the lottery. I wish I had benefitted from the right to buy scheme previously, but I hate that there's no housing left for people like me now. I'm glad they're stopping it.

Shecan · 26/10/2024 20:49

Where are you living? Where in the UK can a single person on 30k get a council flat all to themselves. Where I live people in your circumstances are either sharing a private rental, in a HMO, or living with parents, or maybe stretched to buying after staying with parents to save or if very lucky to have had family help.

I also now have a small lifetime ISA that I will never be able to use. It just all feels so bloody unfair. I've got a degree but can't even afford to have a child or buy a home, sorry just feeling sorry for myself.

Yes you can, you get to use it when you reach a certain age

So what the right word?
There is no council housing available and the council funds you into a private flat. Is there another word for that?

You could under freedom of info, ask your council how many people are in private flats that exceed LHA rate. You can find out for yourself that they frequently fund private flats exceeding.

No they don't. Stop making up rubbish.

If there is no housing available then people don't get housed, simple as that. People have been on waiting lists for years. They don't have to house people in a specific borough either unless there is some kind of medical need to be in that area. I have literally been through the entire process myself.

Councils can assist you in finding a private rent. That is not the same thing as a "council flat." That is just renting privately. And they will not pay benefits over the LHA. The council does not pay housing benefit any more either except in certain specific circumstances like pensioners, housing is all claimed through Universal Credit.

lemmein · 26/10/2024 20:53

Honestly OP, I know it doesn't feel like it because the housing situation in this country is fucked - but you are in a fortunate position. You wouldn't even qualify for social housing in most areas.

I've been renting from a private landlord at market rates for 15 years!!

Anyone can apply for social housing usually, it's not just for those with kids. How quickly you are housed depends on the demand in your area and how great they assess your needs for it.

Council housing is an asset which is publicly-owned and has a value. If someone is allowed to buy the asset at a discount to its true value then the public (all of us) are not worse off.

Who do you think funds the discount?

prestatynprlck · 26/10/2024 21:01

Well i joined the list when i was 19 and continued living at home until i was 25 when i was finally offered a flat. I was a student and working part time when i got it .
